No, it's the complete opposite. When your scalp is clean, hair grows more freely.

yeah but over washing can be bad too i heard. wouldnt less washing help retain more length?

Depends on the kind of washing. Are you being gentle, detangling it slowly and patiently, over manipulating it, drying it abrasively and of course there's hygralfatigue.....there are lots of factors causing people to have issues "overwashing," but most of them are related to the quality/method of the wash.

What I do think is dirty hair doesn't help the hair grow....but dirty hair relative. My fine strands can't handle being too dirty too long. I get breakage because my strands are too coated. I also get unbelievable tangles.

I don't know how in the world you came to that conclusion. Hair grows at the same speed no matter how dirty or clean it is. If hair 'grew more freely" when the scalp is just clean, then how do you explain people with braids or weaves having tons of new growth? It's not like they can clean the dirt underneath the braid. Hair grows at the same speed no matter what you do to it provided there's no major tension ripping the follicles at the scalp.

Ummm, I came to that conclusion due to reading numerous studies as well as member's testimonials over the many years I've been here. Frequent water rinsing, co washing, shampooing, whatever, has been shown to increase growth for most of those who try it. Common knowledge 'round these here parts. :look:

Can you point me to these studies? I didn't deny frequent moisture prevents growth. What I said was clean or dirty hair has no effect whatsoever on the GROWTH of your hair. Which you denied that has no scientific or biological basis. It is a known hair MYTH. Whether you bleach your hair, relax it, heat style it, braid it, or weave it, your hair is growing from the scalp which grows at the same speed no matter now matter how many times you cleanse it or not. There are many dread heads that do not shampoo or condition often at all and yet they still grow massive amounts of hair. Same for weave wearers and people that wear braids. Many tribes in Africa refrain from applying water or any type of cleansing ingredients to their hair often and grow massive amounts of hair. Again, I'm not sure where you're getting your information from but it's incorrect.

Wait are we talking retaining length or "growth"....they aren't necessarily the same thing. When my hair is too dirty, I get breakage....so I don't retain length.....and my hair doesn't get longer.....etc etc.

Am I understanding OPs question incorrectly?

I lost those articles yeeeaaars ago.

Of course hair is going to come out of the scalp no matter how clean/dirty your hair is. No one said that hair will stop growing if it's dirty. Frequent washing/cleansing/rinsing of the scalp has been shown to not only remove debris/dirt/oil/product, but it also stimulates the scalp. The combination results in faster hair growth as experienced by myself and countless members here and on every other hair board. Too much product/dirt/whatever on your hair can result to buildup, which leads to breakage. Ergo, it's better to have clean hair. It's better to have a clean scalp.

Those who wear weaves/braids/dreds are able to retain the length they get due to the styles being very low/no mani. Their growth has nothing to do with how fast or slow their hair grows. They're simply retaining most of what comes out of their scalp.

If that's what you meant, I absolutely understand now what you were saying. Maybe I took it as something else. I apologize if I came off rude. I took it as something else so I was simply trying to interject.
