...Loc Her Hair! :yep:

On August 30th, I styled my hair into two-strand twists as starter locs. I plan on washing once every 1-2 weeks and retwisting the new growth every 1-2 months.

I decided to loc because I was tired of fooling with my hair. The constant styling and manipulation was getting out of hand for me... so bad that it started hindering length retention. While it was fun creating different styles, I was doing it too much... I would sometimes do 3-4 hair styles in one week! Crazy, I know! I feel like locing my hair will better fit my lifestyle and schedule, and it will allow me to leave my hair alone for a change.

Awesome! Definately give us some pictures of the process as it goes along. I think the board could use some voices for those with locs...can't wait to see the pictures. :drunk:

Good luck Poohbear! I visit your fotki a lot and I love all the things you do to your hair, but I'm sure the locs will look lovely :yep:.

Yep!

Beforehand, I went to a loctician who did comb coils and I did not like them. So I washed them out and did my own hair. With the help of all the online information I've been reading for the past months, I will be maintaining my locs myself. ;)

Just to make sure I understand, do you plan on washing every 1-2 weeks from the outset or once your locs bud?

Since I started my locs Aug 30th, I plan on washing my hair around Sept 6th or Sept 13th, or whenever my hair and/or scalp gets dirty. ;)

By the way, did you ever get your money back from that fraudulent company or did they turn out to be legit?

Good Luck! I remember I tried locing backing in 01, but I thought you couldn't wash your hair until it started locing. I was cleansing my scalp with seabreeze, but I got tired of that so I just decided to relax again. I wasn't really thinking about staying natural long term. At that time, I just cut all of my hair off to be free from a lot of emotional things. I wish I would have taken my hair more serious. I think you will look nice with locs.

From what I know about starting locs, the hair should not be washed until the budding stage, usually about 6-8 weeks, depending on hair texture. That is typically a difficult time, but extremely crucial to the locing process.

I THINK ALSO SINCE SHE IS STARTING WITH 2-STRAND TWISTS HER HAIR WONT UNRAVEL AS EASILY..OR AT ALL.
I THINK ITS WHEN YOU START WITH THE COMB COILS LIKE I HAVE THAT YOU CANT WASH YOUR HAIR SO SOON...B/C THEY WILL DEF UNRAVEL. I'VE HAD MY COMB COILS FOR A MONTH NOW....AND GOT MY HAIR RETWSITED ON THE 1ST...BUT I DIDNT HAVE IT WASHED, BECAUSE THEY WOULD COME RIGHT OUT...SO I HAD TO JUST HAVE MY SCALP CLEANED WITH A SCALP CLEANSER.
BUT ON MY NEXT RETWIST..WHICH WILL BE IN ABOUT THE NEXT 6-8 WEEKS I WILL DEF GET IT WASHED.
 
Good luck, Poohbear! I have toyed with idea of locs but only so that I could get them unraveled later. :rolleyes: I just want long hair darn it. And life just seems so easy never having to use a comb.

How long do you plan on growing them? Just make sure that they are of a good thickness because I hear that if the sections are so small, the weight of the loc can cause it to break off at the base.

I need to find Asha's album again. She was my loc hero. Started hers with braids and they were so neat. I imagine yours will look just as beautiful. Do indeed announce when you have progress shots.

Wow, I remember when you decided to go natural. Well good luck! You should check out the thread about sisterlocs since you are just starting out.

Yeah, I've read that too, but I cannot wait almost 2 months to wash my hair. :nono: From the sources that I have read online and from experiences I have read on Nappturality and other forums, it's best to wash your hair when it gets dirty but not too early, especially if you have a loose hair texture (which I don't have to worry about because I have a very very tightly coiled hair texture). My hair usually gets dirty around week 2 of not washing, so that's when I plan on washing. I also agree with darkempress...that's why I started with two-strand twists so my hair will not unravel as easily. Plus, my hair is at a pretty good length to where it will not unravel as easily as someone who started with shorter hair. ;)

I've read up on sisterlocs and while I wouldn't mind having sisterlocs, I did not want to pay all that money to maintain them by a loctician. And I wouldn't want to maintain them myself because of how small they are.

The bolded part is another reason why I've decided to loc. While doing different natural hair styles was fun, my hair was SUPER shrinky! I mentioned one time that even when my hair reaches brastrap length, my hair would still shrink into a 2-inch teenie weenie afro. I just know it would based on the texture, density, and weight of my hair.

I plan on growing my locs to brastrap length at least if possible. I feel that I have made them a good thickness for my liking and so my hair will not break off. Reading about locs falling off was one thing that worried me before deciding to get them, but I think the main reason that this happened to folks was because they would overtwist their new growth (like everyday or once a week which is too much). I'm also not too worried about my locs falling off because my hair is light as a feather. I've never felt heaviness (yet) with my hair. I'm sure that will change as my hair grows with locs, so I will always be careful with how I treat my hair. ;)

darkempress, your comb coils look fantastic on you! :yep:

Back in August, I actually went to a loctician to start my locs with comb coils and I did not like them on me! I immediately washed them out and did two strand twists myself. I wanted more length and fullness and smaller parts. I realized I wanted to do my hair myself instead of having it done by a loctician. I'm the best person that knows my hair.

However, when I attempted to wash those comb coils out, it was not so easy... The comb coils were staying in my hair! I had to wash my hair about 3 times to get rid of the comb coils. My hair texture is THAT tightly coiled. :)
