I don't buy the R&N because I don't like that boo boo brown bottle.

LOL at the way you described the color

That's what I think too, Sassygirl. When I first saw the R&N bottles I wasn't offended at all. If anything I was a little pleased, especially since they keep it with all the other Pantene products and don't segregate it off with the rest of the "black" products (like the Relax line does).

Of course it's a marketing ploy; they are a company trying to get more people to buy their products. And they're doing a good job, really. I bet a lot of Asian women (not just Indians) will give Pantene a second look since the company seems to be "addressing" their specific hair needs. Heck, I've heard ladies on this board say the same thing about how the ends of their hair look lighter than the rest when they aren't moisturized enough. I might even give the conditioner a little trial

I agree completely with AngelForLove and was just signing on to tell how please I am with this product. I have had a lot of difficulty with my hair lately and the shampoo and conditioner worked wonders. Left my hair very soft and felt conditioned without feeling sticky or weighed down... I really like this product! I say, market on! Especially if it makes other companies produce a product as good or better.

Okay, I have to stick up for Pantene. First of all, I love their R&N conditioner. It makes my hair perfect! I am glad that they came out with the R&N line. The beauty industry takes so much of our money they should act like we exist. It is nice to finally get that kind of attention from a major company. And I love looking at an R&N ad and seeing black people, knowing that what I see is an attainable goal. Before this all I saw were white people in hair product ads which made me feel like my hair was alien and I could never attain beauty because the standard of beauty shown was that of a white person, like I need to try to look as white as possible to be pretty. And I don't feel conspicuous or embarrassed holding the bronze bottles (in fact I feel proud). I feel more embarrassed when I have to go to the tiny display of "cultural" products (which I've noticed don't always seem to look as clean and new as the major brands) and pick up something which many caucasians probably never heard of, like I am affirming something they already know: Black people's hair is very different.
And so what if it is just a marketing ploy? After all, any smart business in a capitalist society is going to try to tap into such a huge consumer base. Either way it helps us out. Once one big business recognizes a consumer base the others will follow to keep up. That means competition for them and better products at lower prices for us. I believe the ends justify the means. It is a win-win situation for us. We are finally being acknowledged.

ITA. Well said

I'm all for more competition!

I just received my R&N samples in the mail and I have to say that I was very impressed with the conditioner. It gave my hair lots of slip; very impressive! I had never tried the Smooth and Sleek or any other Pantene conditioners though.

IMO, when you've tried one of their conditioners, you've tried them all (at least in my case).

That's good to hear...I did notice that most of them have very similar if not the exact same ingredients.

I've tried the moisture renewal as a conditioner wash and while it did give me slip..i wondered if the r&n would be better. If the only difference is a few oils added maybe I will try adding some oils to the moisture renewal if I decide to repurchase it...right now I am loving lekair cholesterol for co washes and it costs the same as pantene.

Allandra,

You're right! Once you've tried one--you've tried them all.
I was reading on a website (that someone here posted) that those in the professional hair care industry think that Pantene is just the worst stuff out there.

I remember my first year of college, one of the (black) girls that lived on my floor had the most gorgeous, shiny, healthy hair I think I'd ever seen. When I asked her what she was using, she said Pantene. (This of course was before the R&N came out) I started using it too. And I remember that this was a time when my hair really thrived and I was still blow-drying it every week too.

Now I'm all into "professional" and "salon" products but shoot now that I'm remembering my previous results with Pantene, they may start seeing my dollars again

Supergirl,

My hair really began to thrive when I started using Pantene, also. Recently, I read an article that said the same as what you've read - that it's one of the worst products out there. So, I stopped using it. Reading the raves on this board though, have driven me back to it.

When I bought a leave-in at the store last week, I stood there and compared ingredients and of the 4 leave-ins they have, I believe 3 of them had the EXACT same ingredients. But maybe there's a difference in concentration? I just can't believe they wouldn't think that people wouldn't notice that...

I do think they believe people wouldn't notice. WE (us gals on the board) are a rare breed of consumers. We read ingredients. We pick up on product twins with different brand names, etc. So of course we know that the Pantene conditioners are pretty much the same, but the average consumer has no clue.

When I used Pantene in college--I had no clue either

Oh also, since Pantene is in the Procter & Gamble family--P & G spends crazy $$$ on marketing. I'm sure it was someone's brilliant idea to name the conditioners different things (based on a woman's particular hair care need) but put the same stuff in it. You can definitely sell more that way.

That's true, Supergirl.

Have you also noticed that they do still sell the old versions? The normal version, dry hair version, fine hair version? I usually see them at the bottom of the shelf. Now, I wonder if those have the same ingredients...

Really? Now that's something I didn't know. I'll have to check them out to see if the older versions have the "staple" ingredients
laugh.gif

I wonder what Pantene would say if asked why ALL of their conditioners have the same ingredients. Even their "intensive" treatments which can go for as much as $12 have pretty much the same ingredients with some teeny tiny exceptions.

I think some of them have different concentrations. I tried the Frizz down conditioner in the tube and worked great. I'd give it a 8/10. Detangled and conditioned, the whole nine yeards. Now I justtried the Intensive Restoration Treatment and it was AWFUL> Luckily Supergirl I had the sample of Kenra Intensive Emollient Conditioner that you gave me and that really SAVED my hair. BTW it is about to be a staple moisturizing conditioner for me.

you know maybe the concentration of ingredients are different. It is nice that they have a line for black hair but really I dislike that gold/brown bottle. It has that soul gold getto look.

Funny how would it look if they made the line for Indian women in colours of yellows and reds and soo on.

hahhahaha. As a kid in the islands we always made fun of people who wore bright colours. We would always say: Why does Mrs so and soo wear those coolie colours. lol!

Coolie colors, huh?
laugh.gif

I like the new Pantene bottles. I don't know if it's b/c it's a nice change from the way all of the others look. But I like the little shiny, bronzy look
smile.gif

Maybe someone in their marketing department told them "Um Bob, black people like to feel like they have their own thing. Ya know. They like to feel special."
laugh.gif

I think everyone likes to feel special though--as individuals, not as a race. But I bet someone told them that, for real.

I still don't get the bottle colors either...sort of off-topic, but has anyone ever seen those silk headwrap scarf things at places like Target or Wal-Mart? They only come in BRIGHT green, BRIGHT Orange, and BRIGHT Purple. What's up with that?

Just to mention for any people living in the New England Area... Shaw's and Star Supermarkets are offering a buy one get one free on Pantene Shampoo and Condidtioner. I bought the new Relaxed line today... Can't wait to try it.

That's a great deal, Crystal. Pantene is expensive for a drugstore brand. Is it THE most expensive? At least Wal-mart offers it a little cheaper.

Oh, and let's not forget about the Daily Defense line! It's also made by Pantene, and many of the ingredients are the same in that line as in other Pantene lines.
