Longer haired black women not quite such a rarity anymore?

They are great, I have the mist (that I actually stole from my mom). It's running out, but when I went to go buy some, it was $30!!!! I had to hold out on that.

For me, no, not in the midwest. When I lived in NYC I saw a lot of black women with longer hair..apl and longer.

Maybe we but weaves for versatlity. One day, you've got your hair short, next its long. I don't think its really poor hair care that forces most women to wear weaves. I think black women wear short hair cuts to be fashion forward. Most white american women would not cut their hair (except recently). Short cuts are called butch or soccer-mom dos. But in Europe, short hair is so sexy and fashion-forward. Remember, America is not exactly the most trendy of places. We tend to latch on to things long after europeans have.

I definitely have noticed this. I even posted about it a couple of weeks ago. I used to not see so many black women with long hair, but now I see black women with long natural and relaxed hair! It's really good to see that we are finally learning what's good for our hair and not just using products that contain bad ingredients just because they slap a label on that says "for women of color" .

Long hair has never been a rarity here in NYC.. I see heads of long healthy hair every day .

Co signing on this one. NYC is full of long haired women. If you go get your hair done in the dominican shop alone you are amazed. The heads of hair passing through there is mouth dropping. My little sister's hair is down to her booty.............

Here in ATL is not that bad. I do see some healthy bra strap length ladies.
Overall I think the health of black women's hair is much better then in my mom days...all my aunties were bald. They were not educated at all in proper hair care. My aunt was relaxing her hair every 3 weeks WTF

My girl attended Clark Atlanta University, is from NYC and has mid-back length hair. She drives up to NY to go to her dominican salon. She currently lives in VA.

Here in LA I just see more and more WEAVES. A lot of them are soooo obvious! No1s wearing their hair naturally [curly]. All straightened, whether relaxed or pressed. Tha ones w/o a weave...... SL or shorter. Ate up, thin edges/ends. I seen this one chick with huge bald spots on each side of her hairline, the size of fists. I only seen, at the most, 5-10 black girls w/ BSL or longer in my lifetime.

Everyone's tryna look like a celeb/video girl.....I mean it's LA! So....

Here in Chicago I see some ladies with APL & BSL, however I notice most are neck length and the longest length are SL and maybe a little bit longer erplexed When I am out and about I don't see many women wearing protective styles but their hair be rubbing against their shirts

Almost every bw out there(at least in the us) is somehow connected to someone that is on a hairboard or into black healthy hair,as the knowledge slowly seeps through our general conscious the perception of bw's hair will change

You got that right. Some guy I know in Houston, whom I actually met in Barcelona nearly 3 years ago, dated a member of this board some years ago. I PM'd her and asked her if she did and she said yes. Considering I live nearly 5,000 miles away that was a very close coincidence indeed.

FYI I was NOT romantically involved with this guy at all. Strictly friends.

Oh and how could I forget another member Integrity. Came to found out I lived slap bang next door to her pastor and his family that she's known since she was a little girl.

It all depends on WHERE you live, imo.

I hear that natural heads are predominately on the east coast (dc/MD/philly area) because there are a lot of conscious black folks up there.

Florida has a LOT of dread-heads. Damn near every dude down there is 'loc'ed up.

I've never been to the west coast. But if you go to places like Dallas, Houston, Atl etc...you will see many sistas with long hair.
I remember when I first moved back to San antonio Tx I was at afternoon church services at this huge megachurch. We were all standing outside trying to get in and the majority of black women had between SL and Armpit. Even their hair wasn't long it was healthy.

So, coming from Texas I was shocked when I went to Florida.
Child---I have never EVER seen so many weave wearing sistas in my life until I moved to Tampa. And not even the practical or conservative weaves. I'm talking about them kool-aid color ghetto styles.

Now this was in my Pre LCHF days but I was still into hair. So theyd ask me what I do with my hair and of course I'd go into my regimen because if there is one thing I can't stand is to see a sista walking around with her head lookin a H.A.M.!

They refused to understand that there are certain responsibilities that come w/wearing a relaxer. With the most important being: You have to wash your hair. Forget what you learned as a child. Oh and get rid of that grease while you're at it!
No...they'd rather believe that my hair growth/appearance was largely due to the fact that I had 'good hair'.

In actuality they had the same texture as I did. The biggest difference between them and myself was maintenance. They just didn't know how to care for the hair to achieve optimal results.

Surprisingly Florida has a lot of black folks but the hair industry down there... Put it to you this way: I'd never heard of a Quick Weave until I got there.
We didn't do full-blown weaves back home.

...and you have stylists actually gluing tracks to these women's hair strands! Isn't that unethical in a way...?
I mean--are you there to help ppl maintain and care for their hair?
Or are you willing to throw just any old type of ish in someone's head to make money?

Doesn't seem right.

Back in NC it's still your typical fried, dyed, dried...make u wanna run & hide...lol. I live in NOVA now and I don't see any black women...but when I go to D.C. I'm like wowww...all types of beautiful textures and long haired women. My bff and I be whispering is she Niko's cousin? But ATL is home of the best IMO I thought that way before I knew about proper hair care...I've always wondered what's the ATL secret

ATL is the black hair capital of the country but I've seen some cities that could compete, believe me.
Personally I think it's the stylists. I could be wrong but I think that when you have an abundance of black people in one city there will be an abundance of black stylists to cater to the demand. And SOMEBODY got to know how to do some hair.

Seeing as how some black folks are still running around with outdated hair care ideas in their heads I think it's fair to assume that many sistas get their wigs tightened up on a regular basis at least.
So yeah--of course they'll have have nice healthy hair (especially if that beautician is knowledgeable about hair care).

And I can spot a weave really well so it's not that. I think these ladies run in high end circles and use high end products so they may cater to their hair more. Dunno

This is true, the majority of the sistaz out here are in weaves, although I have seen a handful of women with naturally long hair.

I agree with both bolded statements - lol. And i think the problem with some states like florida could be the hard water coupled with average hair care practices. my two best friends lived there for a about a year and it reaked havoc on their hair. one is balizian and Puerto rican. the other is cuban and irish.

He then said to me "You got Indian in you" then pointed to my friend who has MBL(unstretched) curly 3a hair and said "and you just got a jheri curl!" and started crackin up and said "I'm just joking, but you sisters are beautiful." We said thanks and had a little laugh about it.

Me, too. When I visit the dominican salons, the places are full of APL and longer hair. SURE, I mean, you still have the obviously bad weaves/dye jobs kinds around, in the majority, but the long haired girls with hair that is truly theirs are no longer a rarity!

I'm in Los Angeles, so the "long" hair I see belongs to Miss Kwan and Indian Remy no. 5.

Your post is proof positive that black men really don't like the fake hair scene. I believe they would rather deal with short hair just as long as it's beautiful and well-kept. I've heard men say they don't care, but I don't believe that.

I wouldn't want to deal with a man that wore a weave or wig. I'd prefer him to cut his hair into a style that would flatter his fading hair. Or if he can afford to get "hair implants", then that would be okay too. At least it's HIS hair that's growing.

Yep! It's sites like LHCF that's lead the way for this. At least, I'd like to "believe" that.

I'm no longer relaxed, but when I was many of the tips and techniques helped improve my hair.

That is so cute!!

This reminds me of my sis who when she had a really nice weave in her head, lol, she sat in front of two guys on the bus who thought it was her hair. She overheard then saying "See, that's what I'm talkin about. I like me a lady with her own pretty hair"...she was all and laughing internally.

Side note---Where in NYC are you ladies seeing all of this great hair? I have noticed in Brooklyn that there are a lot of natural haired beauties, and when I go downtown I see soem pretty heads of hair, but in Queens, I rarely see ladies with their own long hair, mostly just a regular wrap, or false hair. Now the Dominican girls in my neighborhood have some doobies going on.

i think it has alot to do with sistahs finally being motivated to seek healthy means to take care of their hair and keep it healthy--an dnot just slickign ti nack with some pink oil or brown gel( i too use to do this when i didnt know any better if when i did know better_

natural products--finding salosn with good intentions--beign motivated by other sistahs with long real hair and wanting to achieve that healthy head of hair

in nyc i see many sistahs with long real hair and then again i see sistahs with logn fake hair

I'm sorry, but this is just plain rude. I would never just "assume" anyone had fake hair even if I did believe it.

I would ask first and not just come out and ask where you bought your hair without confirming if it was fake beforehand. This happens to my sister a lot and it pisses her off.
