I started my loc journey in November and the main thing I'm concerned about is washing my hair without using a conditioner. After my first retwist I used leave in conditioners but I just feel so weird about not deep conditioning :'( - but then I'm also scared of getting build up. I was thinking of diluting my conditioner and using it that way but I'm still worried about build up. Any advice?

I think as long as you rinse really well and use a clarifying shampoo you'll be fine. I have never tried a lock detox, but those seem to work for people on YouTube with locks. If all else fails, you can try that.

Last month we made the decision to cut DS2's locks. He didn't want them anymore, so it was time. He was always a very happy child, but he is extremely happy now. DS1 is still going strong with his second set. I colored it black to refresh his hair and maintained his roots. His hair looks great but they both need their hair washed this weekend. They did a color run at school so the colors are all over their head and their clothes. (It washes out.) So my weekend will be busy.

For those who have had both traditional locs and micro locs, which of the two did you like best and why? I'm heavily considering going back to locs. I just torn on which one to go with.

I put twists in after my Dominican Republic vacation last year. Im loced and loving it 9 days away from this years family Jamaica vacation. I wish I'd done it Years ago!
My locs are starting to become solid and I love it here. Even with the unnecessary critique from my Euro haired hubby.
Its always been my plan to loc it up at age 50 no matter what. I decided to loc 9 months before 50. Its a challenge and sometimes I have to ignore whatever is happening with my hair but I push through! My locs are locing and most days im cute with it. I ignore the ugly/challenging days knowing there are better days ahead.
My thinning and full on bald spots are filling in. Cause I left em alone
I look fwd to & im excited about this new journey

Congratulations! Welcome to the locked family...we're so glad you decided to join us. The best part about you getting started 9 months prior to 50 is you can celebrate your 50th with a head full of locks. That must be exciting for you! We would love to see pics so we can hype you up on your journey. Keep going, you're doing great!

I have had Sisterlocks and now I have traditional locks. There were distinct differences between the two sets but I feel like I like my traditional locks more. I think I suffered less anxiety with these than I did with my Sisterlocks. I was also in a different time of my life when I had my first set, but I do appreciate the journey a lot more now for what it was than I did back then.

I like this set because the longer they get, the more carefree I become. (It's been 7 years and nearly 3 months.) If I don't feel like doing anything to my hair, I lean heavily into that energy without feeling guilty. My hair still looks fine. But when I had Sisterlocks, I felt this implied pressure for my hair to be perfect and "done" all the time, which gave me more stress and anxiety on top off what I was already feeling, especially about my hairline.

Self-maintaining is also way easier with this second set, but that's also because I have fewer locks in this set. (325 SLs in the first set, I started this second set with 145 adjacent but that number has fluctuated over the years due to several factors.)

In making your decision, you should definitely consider your lifestyle and how much time you have and want to devote to your hair each day, night, week and month. That should give you an idea of what to choose. When you had locks before, how did you start them and why?
