How being diagnosed with a rare skin disease affected my hair

Hey Ladies,
It's hard to believe I started this journey over 4 years ago. There have been some ups and downs but I'm still here.:yep:

I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called Pemphigus June 2010. The disease makes my immune system attack my skin cells which cause blisters all over my body and lesions on my scalp.

The summer of 2010 my entire scalp was covered with this thick, sticky, cap that made my hair fall out in clumps. I thought I was going to lose all of my hair but God saw other wise! However I did end up losing about 50% of the thickness of my hair and the left side is significantly shorter than the right side. But I'm just thankful I have any hair left at all.

So here are a few pics from my journey.

Here's more

The last two pics show how uneven and thin my hair is now after my diagnosis. All the other pics are before.

I hope your feeling well these days, you sure don't seem to let the disease get the best of you :) Your so pretty! I remember you from when you were trying to decide whether or not to shave your hair on the side, how is that going? Are you letting it grow in? Your hair looks great, what are your hair goals for 2012?

My prayers are with you. Your hair is so shiny and I can't see that it's thin. Also, the shaved side is gawjus!

Hi there, thank you for your kind words. I was actually diagnosed right after I got that cut. So I had to let it grow out. That shaved part is actually chin length now! I should post a pic of that. I think I will. My avatar shows what my hair looks like now.

But as far as my goals for this year, I'm doing youtube videos now so I just plan to let it grow and see how long it gets. I've been inching away at the part that's longer, hoping the other side will eventually catch up. I'm so tempted to just cut it and be done with it but I think I'm gonna try to be patient with it and see what happens. :yep:

You and your hair are gorgeous. I never would have thought that you were having trouble with your health/hair/scalp. You've done a beautiful job, keeping your hair in tip-top shape. :)

Sorry to hear about your illness but I trust and belive your hair will be back 100% in no time. You really can't even tell at all. Great hair! Subbing to your channel :)

This is the part that I shaved the summer of 2010. Now that I'm looking at the pics it's actually a little longer than chin length. It's more like neck length I guess.

Wow!! Your hair looks great considering all that you have gone through. Thank God you didn't lose all of your hair and even more thanks for the beautiful hair that you currently have. What a blessing. I pray for your continued strength and healing.

Oh and happy continued hair growth!!

OP, you and your hair are both absolutely gorgeous! I'm glad to see that you're making great progress. I noticed that you're relaxed, and I was curious to know if you've experienced any problems with relaxing since your scalp is so sensitive.

I had to stop relaxing because I was getting lesions all over my scalp. I didn't know what was going on. I never used to have any problems, but all of a sudden I started developing sores. Since I went natural, my scalp is doing much, much better.

I'm definitely going to check out your youtube channel!

Girlfriend! Your hair looks great. There is no way that a normal person looking at your hair can see that it is thin or has fallen out. You did such a great job caring for your hair and I love how you styled the side. It does not look like it came out. Your HJ is a testimony for women like me because through many trials and tribulations, you can still grow beautiful, healthy hair. You look beautiful and so does your hair. Thank you for sharing your testimony!
