LADIES LET's Talk...

I don't know a single black owned beauty supply store and have never been to one. I get most of my producs from target, drugstores, & the BSS store, I rarely buy products online though, i don't have a credit card. I would if I could. And some of the stuff I would purchase online are probably not even black-owned.(more than half are probably not)

I will admit it is strange to see koreans owning businesses in black neighborhoods. But they saw the opportunity and ran with it. I assumed that whites owned the wig/weave market before the koreans took over (correct me if I am wrong) and yet people all of a sudden want to take action? It is largely their industry now and though I would support a black business, I don't go out of my way trying to find out if a business is asian owned or black owned. It is sad to see that they are taking our money from this expensive industry but it's largely theirs now. If you sell the products that I am interested in I will buy from you, I dont care if you are asian, black, white or whatever.

And lastly, my experiences at asian BSS have been nothing but pleasant and they were very helpful and I will continue to shop there. :ohwell: There is obviously a demand for weaves/wigs and the products that they sell. I have spoken with friends about this before and they generally do not care what race they buy their products from.

yaya24 Thanks So Much!!!!!! :thankyou:

I think we should compile a list for this forum. So please keep them coming!

beana Yes ma'am!
larry3344 Great Idea!

Once we get a list compiled maybe we can get all the other blogs to put the list on their blogs as well. Information is power:bouncy:

I live in PA and there's a black-owned BSS that I go sometimes. It's located in Northwest Philadelphia. They sell quality poducts, including Elucence. However, a cosmetology license is required to purchase relaxers, which is not an issue for me. I do also frequent Target and Rite Aid to obtain certain products, but I longer go to Asian BSS.

Call it what you want. A products a product. Im in the wrong thread, im not concerned about who owns/runs/corrupts a business. Either way, it doesnt justify racism from either side.

Beany Thanks!

I just contacted http://www.bobsa.org and asked for a list of the black own beauty supply stores nationwide. I will keep everyone posted...

BOBSA is the premier national organization that provides African American's the platform to demonstrate competitive leadership in the $9 billion dollar Black Hair Care & Cosmetic Industry nationwide and internationally.

Call it what you want. A products a product. Im in the wrong thread, im not concerned about who owns/runs/corrupts a business. Either way, it doesnt justify racism from either side.
I don't think it has anything to do with racism, or not wanting to buy products from people based on their race. What I think this thread is touching on is the idea of black people helping black businesses to become successful so that we as a community can have more of an impact on the economy, politics, and big decisions made in this country. Despite what we may feel about equality, it is very well known that as one of many minorities in this country our voice often gets drowned out. Now, if you care nothing for politics, are not ambitious, or aren't really concerned about setting up a good future for your family members, children, and community then yes this thread is not for you.

However, this is not about reverse racism. It's about taking all the hard earned money that black people spend on a regular on weaves and hair product and what have you and reinvetsing it BACK so that we keep a steady flow. If you always have money going out of your pocket and never flowing in, YOU WILL END UP IN DEBT. Promoting other black companies and helping business with good leadership get on their feet can give us a stronger pull in the economical system, it can help people who are struggling financially to be able to pick themselves up, and can mean the difference between your future children getting their GED or being sent to a state university. If we improve ourselves from a financial standpoint, there will be a domino effect in so many lives.

Now, they are trying to start with the BSS, but that is only the beginning. There are so many other black owned businesses that get swept under the rug and end up failing within the first year due to lack of funds, advertisement, or acceptance by their intended demographic. It's not a matter of "OH, I ain't gon buy nuffin from that sto, demz asian in there." That's npot it at all. But OUR MONEY is being used to pay for that Asian women's son TO GO TO THESE FANCY UNIVERSITIES. Is there anything wrong with that? No, but there is something wrong with us paying to send other children to these great places while our children has to live without due to the fact that they don't have as many opportunities because of the lack of finances within the average black home.

Most of the BSS I've been to are run by middle easterns and I have seen a few with blacks running the registers and such but I quickly learned that they were simply employees. I dont think I've come across any black owned BSS in NYS.
I know of one thats run by hispanics tho, which is connected to their salon. That one is in a major hispanic community.

Either way I dont shop at any of these places anyway. I buy online, walmart, or make my products for the most part.

Hmm, I don't really know how to respond to this. However, one thing that I have observed is that I no longer use products marketed towards AA's. Even when I was relaxed I rarely used them, other than the relaxer itself. I think we also need to work on using products that are not just intended for our "type" of hair. I live in an Asian country now and they still recommend products to me regardless of my hair. I'm also a big fan of customer service so if you have a funky attitude I'm not shopping there. If we want more black business we have to work for it together. We have to network and exchange info.

There's a BSS over here in Crown Heights, by the Eastern parkway. It's owned by Jamaicans I believe, but I'm not sure cause I did see one asian man in there selling stuff.

Wow...uh...? I dont give a **** who gets my money. A products a product. If they have the one I want, I'll buy from them, if they dont, I wont. Race should never be a factor on whether or not someone purchases something, because im sure 60 years ago white folks wouldve said and done the same thing to us.

Oh, my young child....yes, it does matter. Racism is STILL alive and well in the business community (and everywhere else). Just because we have a blk President now doesn't mean everything has become suddenly 'fair.' In fact, I'm never seen a president as disrespected as Obama. Hmm, wonder why?

Every other race out there supports their own except for us. This is how other races get ahead and STAY ahead and why we can never seem to catch up. If I could FIND a blk-owned BSS I would DEFINITELY support it. In Harlem, NYC every shop seems to be Asian-owned.

Anavrin It's not "racist" to simply acknowledge the FACTS about how black owned beauty supplies are being forced out of business.

I have so many things I want to say, but i'll shut up because I dont want to come across as impolite. :nono:

So ordering black focused hair products online thats more than likey owned by a white person (not even asian just white) is better than buying locally from a asian owned BSS? Im confused now.

See I get that you are pushin for more black owned stores but words on a page are just words on a page. Until the plans are made and followed through by a black person to open a BSS ima buy my staples where I can get it thank you.

Besides if you guys can buy from big corporations like Walmart and Sally's I can buy from Sam. It doesnt matter if she's asian she's nice and she knows her store like the back of her hand.

@sckri23 there is nothing to be confused about. There are several quality black owned and operated product lines:

Darcy's Botanicals
Hydroquench Naturals
Karen's Body Beautiful
Oyin Handmade
Silk Dreams
Nubian Heritage
ayurnaturalbeauty.com (black owned ayurveda online store)

^^^ just to name a few. If you're not bothered that people who wouldn't employ you (except to check bags and follow people around in the store) take your money and contribute NOTHING positive to your neighborhood... thats alright by me

I had an ex that worked at one of those shops on 4th...and let me tell you, they paid him the exact minimum!! Here we are giving them So much of our money, and let's ask any of those workers how much they're making, or *laughs* if they're getting benefits. Betcha NOT! :nono:

I only know of one black owned BSS store in Atlanta. All the stores in my area are Korean-owned. I don't go into the city that often so I order my stuff online. They sell all sorts of natural beauty products at Sage Naturalceuticals.

and mainstream product lines that are black owned an operated are

Dudley's
Design Essentials (not 100% sure about this, but will double-check)
Kizure

Only black people think its racist to support one another lol...

My 2 cents

I think if a business was started, the women here are amazing. PERSONALLY I believe that vendors and companies come on here, and get information to make products. See what is hot and what is not. Was telling Dear Hubby a few days ago, I worked in the salon all in the 90's and products available to use were Dudley's and the new at the time Mizani and Motions. * TCB, P&comb in a jar, and other small catered to us brands. Relaxers and grease with harsh shampoo's were our section in the beauty supply store. NOW all of a sudden Natural hair products other then Wax sits upon the shelves plentiful.

We have amazing women on here, from Science majors or scientist, lawyers to law students, chemist to chemistry majors and so much more, just people who know a wealth of information. Some of the brands such as Hairitage Hydration's has sparked my interest, of the most awesome quality.

Learning to stick together and not selling to the highest bidder would be the challenge but.....

Uplifting and SUPPORTING our own people is what I claim, no racism there.

Wow!!!! So what if there was a black owned BSS but you still couldnt get hired cause they decided to keep it in the family and their not giving back to the community, would you still feel the same way??? Ahh i'll answer that.... You wont cause their black and not some other race. Thats sad i for one am gonna support business owners no matter what race. Business owners have it hard already without all the racism/race preference per say.

I support any business I even support unsigned music artists on twitter but if any other race said I only wanna buy from a white american for example everyone would be offended and probably get the government involved saying that person was a racist. And ppl are makin a fuss sayin we as black ppl should do the same thing?? Thats twisted to me.

You are missing the point entirely. You truly do not understand this is not a coincidence or happenstance. Koreans are forcing us out of our own businesses.

I do understand. Do you understand that owning a business is hard, anyone who has tried and succeeded in owning one is truly a fighter. I know because my great grandmother used to a own a BSS/salon. So I get what your saying but good products are good products no matter who owns the store where its sold.

Of course I understand owning a business is hard!!!! ESPECIALLY when your own people don't support you or make comments like you just did upthread. HOW do you think Korean businesses succeed????
