I can't remember how I was introduced to it(probably a friend or hairdresser) but Pink Oil is TRASH!! I will never, for the life of me, figure out how a product can make your hair greasy AND dry at the same time.:perplexed

I have an almost full bottle of the oil sheen that I bought years ago. I have no intentions of using it, but I can't bring myself to throw away a full bottle.
Use it in the summer to add that shine to your legs.

I have no idea how i came upon this mess. I used it faithfully, foolishly and sure enough i had the driest hair ever.... I had no clue about hair and the ingredients in the products dear lord dont make me rememeber

The Africans. The Africans love using this stuff when braiding your hair. It just made my scalp itch.

They do. I had a fit when I was getting my hair done for my bday and she slathered that mess on my head. I don't use that mess in my hair. I hadn't since a child. I had been going to her for over a year and she never put it in there before. She was like do you want me to wash it out? I was like NO. Just leave it.I didn't want her causing more damage on my hair wet than she was on the dry hair.

This thread is too funny. You ladies crack me up!

I never really used the stuff. My younger cousin had APL hair, and it was thick too. She used to use it everyday, so I thought if I used it my hair would get that long and thick too. Didn't happen. I think I bought one bottle in my lifetime.

My older cousin who I idolized at the time used it when she pulled my hair back in a pony tail. The ocean waves was poppin! My dang head was as slick as an eel!

Now that I look back on it... My cousin always been a tad on the bald side:perplexed

Pink oil is like malt liquor for the hair. Unleashed on the black community to hold us down!

A beautician told me to use it because you could put your curling iron to your scalp to stretch your new growth in between touch ups. Even after one usage I hated it. It was just as bad as grease. My mom greased me to death!

While reading Essence (with Mary J Blige and hubby on the cover), they had the NERVE to recommend this pink mess! I thought of this thread right away!

I was intro'd to pink oil by way of magazines like Black Hair Sophisticates. I'd bought it on and off during the years--thank goodness it's my off season. ;)

it's pretty clear we all hate that crap. yet we all used it at some point. why did you start using it?

in my case, my mom always did my hair with grease. that's all we knew. so when i got a job and started buying my own things i discovered hair moisturizers. i was shocked at how well it controlled my hair and how i could smell it all day. so what it was greasy as hell? it beats grease. i even got my mom and sister using it. heck my brothers used it as lotion a few times. thank goodness i know better now.

Mannn I loved me some lusters pink lotion. My mother usd it on me as a kid and I never stopped until about 5 years ago. I stopped using it cause its a little to oily.

I saw it on a commercial break during the time I used to watch Soul Train (they ran hair care products and Mickey D's commercials like there was no tomorrow!! :lachen:) I saw the models with long flowing hair and assumed that it was good for our hair! Tsk tsk tsk...what a sham!

My mom was a PJ. I got a relaxer at age 13 (about 91 or 92) and we both were using it for approximately one relaxer cycle. My aunt who was our hairstylist, told us to throw it away, when we came in for our touch ups. She was like:

"Ewww..what have yall been putting in yall hair?"

She told my mother that it coats our hair, makes it dry,( Moms didnt believe this, she still liked it) and THE only reason we stopped using it is because my aunt told us that our relaxer wouldn't take because of it...

After that the stuff went out the window...

I stoped using it 5 years ago too.:-(
After using it for 15 odd years with no problems, loved it,
Found out when they started putting the ingrediants on bottle that it contained the 'badstuff' mineral oil etc...

But just started using it again this year, after trying almost every product in the world

my hair feels so much better and stronger for it, my hair loves mineral oil

My mom always used straight up TCB grease on my hair....but some of my friends used pink oil. I always thought it worked better for those with looser coils cause it always seemed water based to me. I didnt want to touch anything that was gonna make my naps revert and make me have to get that straightening comb again

After I got a relaxer in middle school, I may have used it once or twice but I never really liked that stuff :ohwell:

My mom used to use it in my hair when I was a kid. I continued to use it when I started doing my own hair in JHS. I loved the smell. Not sure what the reason why I stopped using it in HS/College.

Oh lawd...my sister introduced me to that mess. I just remember my hair being dry and greasy while I used it...like burnt fried grass. That stuff is disgusting.

Since I stopped using Pink Oil and other cheap nasty greases/moisturizers my hair and scalp are so much healthier.

Chayil

It was the only moisturizer i ever knew until I was about 19. When I went to college I had two liter sizes of it, and I still had the same amount when I left; I've always hated that stuff. I swear I can still smell it.

Is it me or pink oil isn't THAT THAT bad? I don't know maybe it is me. I mean, it kept me at a shiny SL and it acutally kept me from breakage.

I tried some again not too long ago and it was actually decent (as I remember). It was a lil heavier than I remember but it did the job.:look:

*shrugs* that's how I feel

It was found it my great grandma's trunk along with a jar of Dax...

:lachen: :lachen: :lachen: My mom used Dax and Pink oil. As a matter of fact my dad still uses Dax

I have to admit I liked this stuff at one point and it somehow smelled good to me back than...it looked nice and pink and girly....boy I was wrong!
When I was younger my mom only new about relaxing and straightening hair...was sad is that my mom was a certified hair beautician. She didn't deal with my natural hair very good and swears by the pink stuff even 'till today...I actually didn't know the stuff was bad 'till I came across this site...she uses it on my younger sister who has really long 3b/3c hair:perplexed

 oh wow...

The funny/sad/tragic part of this story is that they still sell this stuff!!! I used it too in the 90s. Can't remember how I started. The heat loving beautician that messed up my hair is the one that to me to stop using it.

You can fry chicken and grease door hinges with it!

Pink Oil is just a black mom's way of TRYING to care for our hair... geez. I put that stuff on my hair every morning before school and my hair was GREASY and DRY and STICKY.... it was just a mess!!! I'm sure knowing what I know now, if I were to go back to it it'd be okay... I'd just have to wash my hair everyday with turpentine.

lmao@ locking like an umbrella

For me, I used one semester in middle school. It literally turned my hair ORANGE! My hair was so dry I could actually snap it in half. Needless to say it was the worst year of school ever!

My mom used that stuff on my hair as a child but my hair wasnt dry. I was in good hands because she is a stylist and took me to the salon for weekly shampoo and condition. The pink oil was for maintence only. Another thing I remember is always having pink stuff in the folds of my ears and a classmate said " what's that pink in yo ears". Oh the memories!!
