How were you introduced to Luster's pink oil?

Human being
it's pretty clear we all hate that crap. yet we all used it at some point. why did you start using it?

in my case, my mom always did my hair with grease. that's all we knew. so when i got a job and started buying my own things i discovered hair moisturizers. i was shocked at how well it controlled my hair and how i could smell it all day. so what it was greasy as hell? it beats grease. i even got my mom and sister using it. heck my brothers used it as lotion a few times. thank goodness i know better now.

It must be in our genes. It was the first thing I ever remember putting on my hair. I dont know, how I dont know when.

That and Crown Royal and Blue Magic hair grease.

I can't say. I think the word got out that it made hair grow and it was cheap. I used it for years with nothing to show except short, greasy, unmoisturized hair.

OMG! When I was, like 12, in 1991 or so, my mom took me to this HORRID stylist. My mom, being white, had no clue how to care for my hair and she spent very little time taking care of her kids in general. She told the beautician that she should give me a style I could just wake up, rake my fingers through my hair and go! (Almost no black hairstyle takes such little time to care for. Not even dreads.)

This woman decides I should get a curl. I knew enough to know I did NOT want a jherri curl. Oh no, she said. This isn't a jherri curl. It's an S-curl, or a Hawaiian curl or some such BS. A curl is a curl is a curl, especially when every other joke in black america is about jherri curl juice.
Despite my reservations, my hair was given the dreaded curl.

Do we need to redo this at any point? Mom asked. Oh no, don't worry, no need to redo it, it's permanent. WITHOUT explaining that NEW growth does need to be curled or whatever. My hair has always grown close to an inch per month. Within a few months I had a BAA with jherri curled ends.

I was told to use curl activator for "dry curls" and Luster's Pink Oil every morning, and wash every two weeks. I looked so terrible and took SO much abuse... kids are really cruel.

I tried so hard to look decent... I applied handfuls of that stank goop every morning in a vain attempt to look good. Sigh.
...running from the room in tears...

Is it me or pink oil isn't THAT THAT bad? I don't know maybe it is me. I mean, it kept me at a shiny SL and it acutally kept me from breakage.

I tried some again not too long ago and it was actually decent (as I remember). It was a lil heavier than I remember but it did the job.:look:

Dayum, why you gotta bring up childhood horror:mad: I remember it like it was yesterday - it was the summer of (i on't remember) and my mom was tired of me squirming while she was combing my hair. She threatened me with getting a Gheri Curl, in the dead of SUMMER as punishment. I was like "NO, all the bugs and bees will be around my head" She said, OK you can start to take care of your own hair. We went to the beauty supply store and there is was Pink as day with a spotlight shining down, just waiting for me................and the rest is hair history:lachen: :lachen:

It must just be you.

I remember that stuff having a not so great smell plus being full of mineral oil, which makes my hair dry.

My mom used it on our hair:confused: . These lies have been passed down for generations:hammer: . That stuff is so nasty effectively locking out all moisture like an umbrella ella ella a a a.Sorry:lachen: .

oh how could i forget Dax. that was so popular with our neighbors when i was growing up. i was so happy when my mom broke down and got it so that i can finally have long hair (ironically they didn't have long hair either). NOT!

In my neighborhood only the guys used Dax. For their waves, brushing their hair every 5 minutes.:lachen:

My mom used to use it to do rod sets on my ponytails. She'd put some on and put the rods in and make me sleep on it. Instant Shirley Temple curls. It would last a week.

I discovered that crap in high school in the late '80s. I thought I was grown and had become too sophisticated to use the Dax my momma insisted on buying (we alternated between the thick green stuff and the sickening black "Tar" Dax). Sad to say, my hair did much better with the Dax than the Pink Oil Moisturizer.

(Not to hijack, but that was around the same time as I discovered that dreadful Miss Cool 5-Minute Fast Set lotion... 9th grade was not a good hair year...I shudder at the memories!)

If they only knew the effor them boys put into resetting their wave patterns to achieve that look. They have a product review forum just like us, and they got routines. My cousin used to be into that mess. I am so glad he grew out of it.

My cousin started putting this on my hair instead of Perm Repair eons and eons ago. I used to think it was the best thing ever....HA! Never No More!

Wow you brought it back. I was in elementary school and I already had a perm. I would use that to slick my broken off thin hair into what was supposed to be a pony tail. Oh it was horrible.

This brings back bad memories for me but if it works for you then thats great. I guess I look at it this way because I didn't use it properly.

I thought I was the only one. The light pink lotion, I actually liked. Only NTM comes close to leaving my hair looking as good as the pink lotion did. My problem was using it as a moisturizer, as it is drying. But every now and again, I wanna break out the pink lotion just for the bling.

Wow...all this hate on Pink Lotion! I love that stuff. Hate the lite version though. I don't use it too much now since I am on a dominican product kick.

Love the pic of the spinnas. My SO has been using Silicon leave in for his.

I have a friend that uses it and loves it, she actually applies it to her scalp and she says it's made the overall condition and texture of her hair feel different.

My sister use to use this years ago and that was how I was introduced she always ALWAYS had a big old bottle, her hair was always long and thick. I wouldn't use it myself only because of how I style my hair if I'm wearing it out and the texture can be a bit wet and heavy but actually...I might get some to use on my CO Wash days when I set my twistouts.

I can't remember how I was introduced to it(probably a friend or hairdresser) but Pink Oil is TRASH!! I will never, for the life of me, figure out how a product can make your hair greasy AND dry at the same time.:perplexed

I have an almost full bottle of the oil sheen that I bought years ago. I have no intentions of using it, but I can't bring myself to throw away a full bottle.
