I was in 7th grade. And you can really tell from the school pictures. I could not style for anything. All my relaxers and bi-weekly washes were at the salon, though, all through my high school years. I don't think I EVER washed my own hair. Talk about salon-dependent. Sheeesh. But my hair was extremely healthy and was always long UNTIL I wanted that jheri curl. I got that in 9th grade but by the time I was a senior, I had my relaxed hair back. I don't even remember transitioning. My hair always grew very quickly and it was back to shoulder length by my senior year. My head was always a jacked up mess, hence all my mom's relatives had a standing joke that my hair was never going to be done at our yearly reunions.
Always talking about my wearing my hair up in a clip or a ponytail even to work. They would sigh as though there was something wrong with me.
My daughter will remain natural and I'm going to teach her how to maintain her hair starting in a few years when she's about 8. I'll let her do some styles about once or twice a month just so she can get some practice in. I think I was very limited with styling because my mom kept combing my hair and never let me put my hands in it. Or maybe I'll just let her practice in my hair. She gets oh, so offended now when I undo it. She thinks she has done "da bomb" job on me.
