I was 10. I begged and begged my mother for a perm because I thought I had to wear my hair straightened and I was tired of the pressing comb and getting my hand popped and my ears singed! It was all I knew. So she let me get a perm and simultaneously stopped combing my hair. All of a sudden, I was shampooing and styling my hair myself. And what a learning curve it was! I lost a lot of hair (probably from SL/APL to EL), but regained it as I learned how to take care of my hair. I was able to get my hair to APL before I went natural and found hair boards my junior year of college.
