I was 15. My mother did not use relaxers on our hair. She always did a press and pin curl.
Even then we wore the front up and the back out. Once it went back to it's natural texture that was it. She did not hot comb again.
So we would often would do 4 long braids and then wear it out. I would tie a colorful piece of leather or head band around my head. We all had extremely long hair and was not allowed to wear it out often.
Once at 15 I was tired of wearing Princess Laya (sp)(woman from star wars) hair. I use to take it out in school and let it hang down. With it being rolled it had some bounce. Then just before I'd return haome , I would put it back in the style my mother had.

Good grief-with constant supervision, yelling, and comments like- you are going to damage your hair from my mom's,I started at about 12. She left me alone around 13.

I was in the 5th grade we tried that one year lol and it did not work so by sixth grade I had a standing appointment every two weeks at the salon

I WAS 9 YEARS OLD WHEN I STARTED DOING MY OWN HAIR. I HAD TO, I WAS LIVING WITH MY FATHER AND HE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO DO MY HAIR.

Too young, like 5th grade. And it looked a damn mess until my cousin taught me how to style my hair in middle school. Up until that point I was wearing a low ponytail, secured with a really big rubber band. Nothing cute, I'm talking the rubber bands they use at the post office

My cousin taught me styling, not healthy styling. It wasn't until I'd reached this board that I finally learned the proper way to handle my hair. Thank God for that

I remember doing a ponytail with a big bang in the front. (I used my mom's roller to roll it at night) I thought I was so grown..I look back at some of the pictures and I looked a mess!

I was in Junior High School, so I had to be about 12 or 13. I was natural back then, and all I did was spray it with a moisturizer and throw it back in a banana clip.

I was around 12. I didn't want those dooky puffs anymore. I was going to Jr high school and wanted to rock a mushroom and doorknocker earrings.

I remember when I was about 14, I lived in Maryland. I went to a friend's house that lived in DC. I allowed her cousin to cut my hair into one of those mushroom styles. It looked good for the first 2 days..after that I didn't know what to do with it. I got the worse whippin' of my life!! My mom was HOT!!

I was 11, I did not like the way my mom was curling my hair. She said if I want it different then I should do it, I got the bag of curlers and started rolling

Re: how old were u when u start doing your own hai

I started doing my own hair when I was 14...well, basically styling it and rolling it.

My young niece just turned 7 and washes and styles her own hair. She told me how she knows how to do buns, ponytails, and twisty up-dos. Yes, she's sophisticated! She has almost waist length hair (just got about 3 inches cut for her yearly trim).

Re: how old were u when u start doing your own hai

i didn't start doing my own until I was a froshman in boarding school. I think I did it for about six months before I went to get it done and the woman didn't say a word--she just cut it ALL off. Apparently, things were THAT bad. *blank stare*

I was 10. It was 1981 and I did a big chop so I could get a jheri curl. I wore it as dry as I could so it looked like a TWA most of the time and I loved it.

10. I begged for and got a perm to escape the pressing comb and mama was like, "you're on ya own". At first it was not so hot, but I learned good habits through trial and error, and by the time I graduated from high school my hair was almost at bra strap.

On a weekly basis, as children my mother pressed and curled our hair - all five of us! At about age 15, I started doing my own hair. I thought I was pretty good at taking care of it until I decided do my first relaxer at 19. Knowing nothing about relaxers, I bought a jar of SUPER strength relaxer (for men because it only cost a couple of dollars and I said "what the heck, they must all be the same anyway"). I didn't get a neutralizing shampoo either. Needless to say, my hair went down the drain immediately upon rinsing out the relaxer. After that experience, I remained natural for a long time.

My friend's daugher (who is twelve now) has been taking care of her own hair since she was seven years old. I think it's shameful that mom puts so much time, effort and money into her own hair and her daugther can't get the same! Mom uses the best of products and has nice healthy long hair. Yet, her daugther's hair is in desperate need of attention. Shame on her!
