Ok, I admit a was a bit late starter, not to mention lazy. I started at 13. Up until then, my grandma maintained my hair in neat, non-braided styles.

I think I was about 12, in sixth grade I think. A lot of my "styles" was just me putting my hair in a ponytail though.

I don't remember how old I was exactly, but I do remember trying to press my hair myself when I was about 12 or 13. Boy, you should have smelled the smoke and saw the burnt-out spots where my hair USED to be. It wasn't pretty, but now that I think back, it's kinda funny. My dad hated the smell of burning hair, and he would yell, "Turn on the fan," as though that was gonna help

that's funny. you are making me remember the time my sis and i played beauty shop(i was 11, she was 8 1/2). she attempted to straighten my nappy hair and the comb was so hot it burnt a large area of hair out. we got so scared we threw the lock of hair behind the couch instead of the garbage because we feared my grandma would see it in the garbage. I had to take the rest of my braids out and comb my hair into a sloppy ponytail so my grandma would not notice the missing braid.. she eventually did notice and of course a got in trouble....

10 and boy do I regret it. I begged my mom to let me take over because I hated those big ugly braids she used to give me. I wished she'd never listened. I jacked up my hair badly with too tight ponytails. I spent years nursing my hair back to health when I got older and wiser. When I looked back on it, I realized that those big ugly braids she gave me were actually good for my hair. Live and learn

Yeah Lol, that's when my mom, told me that I can put a ponytail, and put a phonytail, but I mostly had braids on ALL the Time..

Sherry, you were BRAVE letting your little sister try to press your hair! Well, from your picture, it looks like you've grown it all back and then some! Wow!

I know, that is young! My daughter is 7.5 and there is no way she can handle her thick head of hair. I can barely handle it! Although my dear daughter tries to experiment with her hair. This frustrates me because she winds up letting it loose, than it gets all big and pufffy and very tangled and knotted! Then is a PITA to detangle it and she cries.

After I got a BAD relaxer (from a professional
mad.gif
) when I was 10 that made my hair break horribly, I essentially had to start all over. From then on my mother did my relaxers (until I was about 16), but I did everything else...I was so anxious to start doing my own hair but I did so many stupid/unhealthy things to it, exactly along the lines of what HoneyLemonDrop mentioned! I often wonder how much longer/healthier my hair could have been from that point on if I'd known better.

Because of that, I always swore that when/if I have children, I would NOT let my daughter get a relaxer until she was AT LEAST 13, and even then, I'd pretty much do everything in my power to persuade her not to. Once you take the relaxer plunge, it's a HUGE committment, and you really need to be old enough, and well-informed, to know how to maintain healthy, relaxed hair.

I started doing my own hair probably around 10 or 11. I remember getting my very first curling iron for Christmas. I still remember it. It was pink and cute and I felt like a teenager! I was like

when I got that thing!!! I curled and curled and curled my bangs to high heaven, LOL...I've been relaxed since the age of 8. Luckily, my hair never went shorter than shoulder length (unless of course I had it cut). I've never been able to do much in the way of styling (besides curling the bangs), so I've been a bun girl pretty much since high school. I think that's what save my hair from falling out, considering my lack of knowledge.

this being said is so true. i got my first relaxer put in when i was 13.. i, too, promised i would not let my daughter get one before that age. i notice a lot of long term damage and weakening to the hair of the women who got relaxers when they were very young.

My mom didn't let me do my hair, I waas in high school still getting my hair combed by my mom. I worked in my cousin's beauty shop and she would do my hair once a week and my mom would do the upkeep. They frenchrolled me to death until I went to the J.C penny salon and got it cut to about an inch. They were all mad and my mom didn't want to do my hair anymore. I was about 15. That was the last time I had long hair.

I was 13 or 14. My mom would always do my hair for me, unless I went to the salon which wasn't very often. Then I decided to start doing my own hair after that.

My mom still does my hair sometimes. On my hair wash days, she won't let me airdry my hair, so she blowdries it. After she blowdries my hair, I remoisturize it so my hair won't be so dry. I wear my hair up in a bun most of the time now instead of down.
I got my first curling iron for my 12th birthday I think, and I burnt so much hair! I remember burning off some hair right before I went to school in 8th grade, so I had to go around school smelling like smoke with a shorter section of hair. People kept coming up to me asking what the smell was and if I got a perm. I had that short section in my hair for most of the year.

LOL But I've grown it out though. Thank goodness the curling iron broke later on.

My hair was so dry. Now I'm 14 and I've learned from my mistakes. I have a ceramic flat iron, but I make sure not to use it almost everyday like I did with the curling iron.

I was twelve. I was natural then. I relaxed my own hair at 13. And then cut it to ear length and went natural again later that year. My hair didn't start coming together until I was 15. So it took a good three years before my hair looked straight.
