I agree with some of the sentiments in this thread, particularly those along the lines of what Bint posted. I really feel black people focus too much on certain things like hair and miss the more important, character, intellect building things. I really like the hair example, because I feel like by constantly keeping a black childs hair "hidden" in braids and such or cut extremely low in the name of looking presentable, it sends a covert message to the child about the social acceptability of their hair. These types of attitudes usually follow these children into their adult lives and shapes their identity. Given the current state of the black community, we definitely need to be focusing our parenting efforts in other areas.
