Would I be in the 4 catergory? Now that I am growing my perm out my hair really curls up tightly.

Sorry I think your hair type could be difficult to determine until you grow it out further- in one sense it could be 4a but because your hair is so shiny its possible it could even be 3c. I think for some its easy to determine type from 1 inch of new growth but some people may not have an idea until the relaxed ends are cut off altogether(at least this was my personal experience).

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree. I've seen Sbaker's hair close up and it curls really easily *her temples/newgrowth*, I think she could be a 3C/4A...when you cut off the relaxed hair I think you'll really be able to tell, but that's what I think

Thanks Cleo and Diva. So you guys are looking at the natural hair in making the determinations of hair type. I need to post new pics which will show my new growth. I haven't permed since Janaury 30th.

You should see it now. It really curls up. Some parts it waves up. I need to do a picture showing the new growth.

I think so too!!! Cocoa I love your hair

I know my hair is in the type 4 category, but sometimes i am unsure whether its a or b. certain hair products bring my different patterns out more than others.

I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds but from looking at your pics, you appear to be a type 4 though I can't tell whether you are mostly type 4a or 4b.

[/ QUOTE ]

No you have a right to your opinion. I say 3b and it is all good.

I agree with others, definitely a 4! But these things are confusing.

I guess i'm a 3b/c? What do you ladies think? Kha I think our hair type is similar. PS. I love the small twist.

Well said!! I agree!

I am a 4F, F = frizzy My little girl is a 1 something, it's only curly if it is wet or very greasy

Type 4 hair is very wiry, very tightly coiled and very, very fragile... is actually quite fine, with lots and lots of this strands densely packed together.

Type 4A, tightly coiled hair that, when stretched, has an "S" pattern, much like curly hair; Type 4A tends to have more moisture than Type 4B, which will have a wiry texture. If you can see a definite curl pattern, then it's an A

Ok. That finally has made it clear to me. I am a 4a, not a 4a/b. Now I know what this cobwebby mess on my head is...it has such fine diameter hair shafts, and is very fragile, although the huge number of shafts I have, makes it very thick.

Thanks for breaking it down. SO I definitely am a A because my hair does curl up like a s.

According to these examples, I have a patch of 3b, some 3c, lots of 4a, with clumps of 4b thrown in.

I'm just gonna call it nappy!

When do you look at your hair to find your hair type?

Do you look at your wet hair after a shampoo?
After I shampoo my hair looks like it is 4b.

Do you look at your wet hair after you use a conditioner?
After I use a conditioner my hair looks like it's somewhere in the 3ish area.

Do you look at your hair after its dry and moisturized?
When my hair is dry and moisturized it looks like it is somewhere inbetween 3C and 4a, with 4b around my ears. I also have a loosely curled patch on the top of my head.

Do you look at your hair after you have used a product to define your curls/waves/ or napps?
My hair is so dense with a mix textures. The few curls that are tossed into the napps never have a defined look.

Does wiry mean that it's course??

so what is the diff in 3c and 4a? because those seem pretty much interchangable to me, like I know my hair is primarily 4, but from if carefree is 3c/4a, then i would most likely identify with her hair
