so what is the diff in 3c and 4a? because those seem pretty much interchangable to me, like I know my hair is primarily 4, but from if carefree is 3c/4a, then i would most likely identify with her hair

That's been my confusion too HoneyDrop. Chyna Red just posted this on the off-topic board, which I found helpful:

The curly ones
3a - big, loose spiral curls
3b - bouncy ringlets
3c - tight corkscrews

The really curly ones
4a -kinky, tightly coiled S-curls
4b -kinky, tightly coiled hair bending in sharp angles (Z-pattern)

I've always called myself 4A because of my tight, defined spirals. But my hair could not be described as kinky, except in a few places. So I compromised and became 3C/4A.

I can't imagine that it makes that much of a difference in the type of products you use. Excpet maybe if you're stretching out your relaxer?

That's what I was thinking.. if you have the corkscrew curls but your hair isn't really kinky or coarse..then you are a 3c.. is that right? Does wiry mean coarse also?? Anyone know??

Man type 2's get no love lol. I wish i had curly hair like you guys and I really love seeing your pics but I'd really like to see someone with hair similar to mine. But still it's all beautiful hair whether your a 1 or 4.

is the 5c where when you'd have to hold down your ear so your mother could get real close to the scalp without burning you?

I think that's it. Or she would just skip over that entire area altogether cause it really didn't make any sense to so it.

I think hair typing has a lot more to do with the curl pattern. I also take into consideration the thickness, strength, shine, softness of the cuticle itself. I see a lot of women claim to be 4a/4b and their hair looks nothing like my 4a/4b.

It makes you want to drink, Ayanapooh?

[/ QUOTE ]

No, it makes me feel drunk b/c I never know where my hair falls.

Judging from your new growth, I would guess in the 3 range, Ayanapooh. Is the Curve visit still in the works or will the hurricane prevent your trip?

Not to highjack, but yes, the Hurricane ruined my trip to Curve.

Back on topic, people tell me I'm probably in the 3 range, but when I see the texture of like Hairlove or skeegee's hair, mine doesn't look like that so I'm always
confused.gif

ayana - when I see your new growth, I think it DOES look like me. Let me take another look...

I took another look and you know, I wouldn't be surprised if once you get rid of your relaxed ends that you see that you and I are hair twins.

*sigh* now I know why that other thread was made. hmm..
If you had Andre's original book and pics you'd have a clearer understanding of the differences. 3c really didn't exist.

I guess i'm a 3b/c? What do you ladies think? Kha I think our hair type is similar. PS. I love the small twist.

[/ QUOTE ]It is hard for me to tell when wet. But I agree w/ the others.

When do you look at your hair to find your hair type?

Do you look at your wet hair after a shampoo?
After I shampoo my hair looks like it is 4b.

Do you look at your wet hair after you use a conditioner?
After I use a conditioner my hair looks like it's somewhere in the 3ish area.

Do you look at your hair after its dry and moisturized?
When my hair is dry and moisturized it looks like it is somewhere inbetween 3C and 4a, with 4b around my ears. I also have a loosely curled patch on the top of my head.

Do you look at your hair after you have used a product to define your curls/waves/ or napps?
My hair is so dense with a mix textures. The few curls that are tossed into the napps never have a defined look.

[/ QUOTE ] No product dry. My hair is the same w/ or w/o product so it doesn't matter.

[/ QUOTE ] y'all are confusing me w/ the texture stuff. I don't remember texture coming in to play in the original book.

Texture wasn't really mentioned in Andre's book. It seemed as if hair typing was based on curl pattern. You could have the same curl pattern as someone else but have a completely different texture than they do.

[/ QUOTE ]That is what I thought. Thanks. You have beautiful hair by the way. So do you Divastate. I love the thickness. Oh and I am a 3b/c and 4a.

I was looking through the hair albums thread. Can anyone help me out with the hairtypes of these particular ladies? (I hope these ladies don't mind me using them as examples. Their albums were posted before so it seemed ok to reference them.

I know, I know...a month late....I'm not good at the hair type business but I always assumed I was 4a????

Well, thanks a lot! Judging from the pictures I am 3c, because my natural texture ain't no where near 4a or 4b, like I thought.
