Goals Going Into 2018 Vs. What You've Achieved

Do you remember what your goals were going into this year? Maybe it was to gain a certain number of inches, or to be able to achieve a new style, or to go natural/relaxed, get rid of any damage from a setback, etc? How has that measured up to what you've actually achieved (or will have realistically achieved by New Years Day)?

I don't 100% remember my goals, but I think I wanted fast growth (as I do every year), and to master a roller set. Neither happened. LOL. Buttt on the plus side, my sudden hair loss from late 2017 has stopped and filled back in, and I will have retained all 4 inches of my annual growth from this year. Gotta be grateful!!! Now onto next year. :D

My goals were:
APL
Less Heat

And that was it lol. I used to straighten my hair twice a month. In 2017 I narrowed it down to once a month, but did have a lot of cheats. I believe I straightened my hair less than 10 times in 2018!!!! Towards the end of the year, I've gone 3 month intervals. I'm 2 weeks short of my second 3 month interval. For 2019, I plan to straighten 4 times or less, so I can keep with my 3 month intervals but hopefully move to 6 month intervals.

I didn't make APL, but it wasn't realistic. I cut my hair to NL at the beginning of the year (April 2018). It's grown back to the length it was before I cut it.

My goal for this year was to grow my hair out from my last big chop last Sept, as fast as possible, and most importantly, grow bangs to cover my forehead and frame my face.

My hair has grown a lot, ( I went from 1inch to collarbone length in back) but what I didn't consider was shrinkage and that my hair still grows upwards.

So no bangs for me just yet.... my hair just wants to be a curly afro all day.

Here were my goals from January. I was way off on my length. I realize now any length goal I need to add at least 6 months to.

2018 Goal Length: BSB... Not even close. I didn't even make apl.

Stay with my weekly washes and protective styles. ..YES

Moisturize and seal my ends every 3 to 4 days...SOMETIMES

Increase my water rinses to every 4 days... NO, I may try again after APL

Use the Mane Choice anti-breakage line...YES but realized this is too much protein for me.

Clip splits when I find them and dust every 4 months. YES, this is working

--Nail my product regimen...Getting close

--Bun...I have the length but lost the interest

I don't remember my goals (which is a shame) but I am appreciative of the knowledge I gained this year:

I wanted to really nail setting this year and I've been very so-so on it. I'm hoping to find the combo/hair tool that gets my hair as smooth as I like it without taking forever and a day to dry. Something that won't make me revert to blowdrying all the time

I'm glad that I've been working out which protective styles work for my fragile strands - even when it comes with some damage, because I at least now know what needs to be tweaked and how long to leave certain styles in for

I've been slacking on the protein treatments this year, largely because I found a really good treatment that cuts the hassle out of hard proteins. That said, hair lazy runs strong within me and I have to make it a point to do them a lot more regularly, especially since I've cut protein out of most other areas of my routine.

I had thought I would have incorporated more ayurvedic herbs and such into my routine, but again with the hair lazy. My hair loves it, but the time it takes:headspin:. Need to be a bit more creative in this, whether by pastes or teas etc.

I also need to regularize my trims. I've been keeping up with dusting a lot better, but I still need to do the whole shebang of straightening and trimming.

Despite all that, (most of) my hair is still hovering somewhere around BSB and I at least have a clearer idea of the goals I'll be setting for next year. Fingerscrossed and all that.

Mostly to gain length. Accomplished. Almost retained an entire foot worth of growth.

Get my scalp sensitivity under control. Mostly accomplished. Some days I just let the inflammation run it’s course since, it sometimes becomes unresponsive to any type of treatment. Most days it’s under control.

Let that thinning spot in the middle area grow in some more. Accomplished. It’s noticeable if my hair is sopping wet, but when damp and fully dry it’s hardly noticeable. On the down side, the thinning has moved towards the left side of my hair behind my ear. Making my right side slightly longer. So that’ll be something I work on next year.

I was also wanting to try and wrap my hair like I used to, but upon realizing how that doesn’t work out with this much hair, and how my hair doesn’t really like combing or brushing at all anymore, I threw that notion out the window.

That’s pretty much it. Everything else that I’ve accomplished, were just things I was nipping in the bud, as they popped up.

My goal was to grow my hair to it's longest length ever which was APL. I met that goal. IMG_20180414_101833-979x1305.jpg
However the heat damage from the previous year and the new growth proved too much for my hair. It started to break off badly. (I did a keratin treatment twice that called for 5-7 passes on each section of hair at 410 degrees. That was way too much heat but I was ignorant at the time). My hair looked like this. My wash day shedding started to look like this. IMG_20180519_010953-1209x1612.jpg
So finally I got fed up and did this IMG_20180618_123305-1612x1209.jpgi ended up just getting the back shaved completely as an undercut and I cut off all the straight ends at the top. The sides of my hair are collar bone length now and the back looks like it has barely budged. It's growing back so slowly.

I suffered a major set back in 2017. I knew it was gonna take me at least 3 years to make a full recovery. My hair is ahead of schedule as my setback forced me to dig into ayurvedic herbs, Belle Bar Organics, Curly Proverbz, etc.

My hair has gained so much health and curl definition, you can’t tell there’s an issue w/ my hair. There’s a huge length discrepancy in certain areas if I straighten my hair but the volume I get in wash n go styles isn’t noticeable.

I think 2020, I’ll be @ 100% recovery ... 2019 I have enough length across the board for more protective styling options.

This was my first year wearing my hair natural (at least in my adult life that I can remember). I had always straightened my hair either weekly or biweekly or worn sew ins. Didn't touch a flat iron for the entire year.

In 2018, I was hoping to retain a few inches of length, didn't have a specific amount in mind but that didn't happen as I spent most of the year slowly trimming away my heat damaged ends. Then when most of my heat damage was gone I realized that my hair is so tightly coiled, constantly wearing it out = single strand knots galore and I ended up trimming more.

I think I'm starting to get a hold of the knots. Actually using a brush to make sure my ends are fully detangled (instead of finger detangling) and sealing with almond oil and shea butter has been helping a lot.

I measured my hair today and it's 9 inches at it's shortest and ~13 at it's longest. Pretty uneven due to trimming heat damage throughout the year. For 2019 I'm hoping to retain most of my length, going to aim high for 5 inches. Hopefully I can find a protective style that I like, trying marley twists this weekend, and keep the single strand knots under control. I think it's doable, I'm excited.
