i'm joining i want to reach bra-stap/midback by dec 2006, i'll be excerising, drinking water, taking bits and protective styles

den1,

My hair looks EXACTLY like yours (when yours was natural, but it doesn't hang) only I wish it grew as fast. You must have cut it though because I thought you were already at waistlength. I guess you cut it because you were transitioning?

You are my hair inspiration.:D

i am in for the winter, although i will probably straighten my hair one last time in a week or so, its only to make sure my newly bought sedu is in tip top shape b4 its too late to return it, then i am in till the end of the year with NO HEAT... (this is a new thing for me to try i have been pressing all my life, so i am going to need to invest in some natural haircare products to define my curl and help with styling)

MizaniMami - Right b4 I start the challenge you gave a testimony of how much your hair grew within a months time by not combing and leaving it alone.

To be honest you are the first member and it make sense that you would be the first of many testimony of how the GHLW challenge helps!

Ok, i'm reeeaallly:confused: confused......

How on earth can you get your hair into a decent pony without at least brushing???
Please help girls...will love to get on this challenge but have got no clue how to do so.
my hair breaks the most when i comb it, but at the mo, i see combing as a necessary evil....any alternatives to combing will be highly appreciated

Preach sista-friend. I think that deserves a thread of it's own!- Also- how do you stretch into the 8th week (and further) w/o a comb

I used to think the EXACT same thing but it can be done.

But basicly for ME I only comb during wash/cowash day with a detangling comb-only when it's time to detangle. Then I airdry (I have a bootleg airdrying tutorial in my fotki if you wanna see it, in my profile).

Every day I take down my ponytail or my twist and apply moisturizer, use a fine tooth comb to RAKE the sides back down. Smooth with my palms a lot, Apply my silk scarf for the night, sleep and forget about it.

It's really easy for me and it's simple.

I haven't brushed my hair since May 2006. You don't need it. I stretch my relaxers for 12 weeks and this time around I am going for 15 weeks. I am pretty sure I will be able to do it.

I use a Jilbere detangling comb & a conair shower comb. I use a seamless comb that isn't quite fine tooth more like medium tooth if that makes any sense :ohwell:

I like the conair tourmaline comb but after week 6 my hair starts to break the teeth :lachen:

For stretching spraying s-curl on the roots works very well and putting a scarf on at night helps the hair to lay down flat.

You can check out my pictures, I was able to get really slick protective styles without the use of a brush.

Since I use protective styles 100 percent of the time I don't use any heating appliances beside my heating cap. I haven't used heat since May 2006. When I want a side swept bang I use a satin roller.

I think I will add pictures of my combs to my photos. I only use the three mentioned above on a regular basis.

hmmmm....:scratchch
use a small comb to rake sides....No combing= less breakage.... goals of growing hair may actually be attainable....

(information swirls around inside her skull)

I'm IN!!!

PS: To Trim Bride............
 ....wow...Gorgeous!!
How do you get your buns so smooth without brushing? I also use silk scarves at night but they always end up escaping from my head before morning!!

Thanks,

In the last picture of me with my afro phony pony I am 8 weeks post. I use S-Curl and I use a satin scarf. The scarf is long so I tie it around twice. It always stays on and usually doesn't leave a line on my forehead:D .

I comb my hair into a ponytail and then I put the scarf on. I do loose ponytails so that my edges won't be pulled too much.

Your satin scarf may be too slippery. Tie it so that it is lower on your forehead then put another less slippery scarf on top of that. This should hold it in place the entire night.

Good Luck!

When I wash my hair I only wash in the shower so the water can pull my hair back. The farther along I got with the relaxer the more that just did not cut it so I started to lightly brush the top just enough to smooth it down.

Well believe it or not, I have not brushed my hair in over a month, even to smooth it back. To smooth, I just pour some pure aloe veral gel into my palms and smooth it over the front of my hair going back toward the crown, Then I pin it down at the crown with bobbi pins. Then I apply a silk satin scarf snuggly and leave it on till it dries. That way my waves are poppin', my edges and crown are smooth, no grease, no frizz and no stickininess or stiffness. I am braiding my own hair into singles and cornrows, doing the baggy method to steam, leaving the braids in for one week at a time, then I take them down, fingercomb well, gently comb through, wash or rinse, or just finger comb and rebraid. I apply my MTG and wildgrowth to the braids or just wildg. to the ends if I am rebraiding immediately. I also apply MN when desired after a takedown and before a rebraid. My hair seems to really be thriving with this method. Also, I have reduced combing to 1x weekly. Because I use Cornrow Magic before I do the first set of braids after a wash, the other times till the next wash, I get no tangles or knots. Whew! Never believed that would be possible.

Thanks for the support girls...:lachen:

The baggying (thanks mizani), the long scarf tied twice (cheers trim bride ) and the shower tips amongst other are helping (thanks Mona Rae and others)

I've used a bit of infusium leave-in mixed with MTG and WGHO to make my hair damp and help me smoothen ...hold your breath for this...without combing my hair. My hair shines as well.

Only prob is after my last hair wash, and conditioning for near two hours, when i combed my hair it broke away happily (stupid thing) even though i use a massive shower comb. Maybe its still recovering from the years of abuse...Or maybe my darn hair enjoys having a  at me...

is this (ie breakage during first hair wash in challenge) normal??

....

Hey GHLW Ladies! Gotta question....

I've been on the "low/no-manipulation" thing for 3 wks straight. No combing unless detangling after a wash. And, even then, if I thought I could get away with it, I might do very little detangling and just throw back in a wet bun. Well, I did a cassia over the weekend and I had a LOT of shedding. I'm wondering if it's because of all that combing I hadn't been doing? I also have 11 wks of newgrowth and about 2 inches of texturized hair ahead of that. It's just very tangly at the roots. Should I try detangling more often? I don't feel like it was beneficial to shed as much as I did. It was like 10 days worth in one day. Suggestions?

I am not sure if not combing minimizes shedding/breakage so much as just putting it off. I think it may be better for me to gently detangle and comb on a daily basis with good quality combs. JMHO:ohwell:

Shedding is a normal process. For me abnormal shedding is combing my 12 post which BTW really isn't shedding it PULLING MY HAIR OUT OF MY SCALP! et hum I learned that lesson the hard way  .

What really helps me as I got further down the line of posting is washing my hair less. The more you wash the more you have to manipulate your hair.

I'm going for the 9 month stretch and the only way I can do that is to have my hair braided/twisted my up for the last 6 month of the stretch.

HTH!

This is EXACTLY my concern and I was just reading through before I posed my question. I am still trying to figure out what the benefit of not combing is. I'm just not getting it. It seems it would be more detrimental to not detangle the hair daily with a safe comb. What I visualize is the newgrowth getting tangled and the hair that is supposed to be shed being tangled as well, therefore causing more breakage. I know this can't possibly be true because it seems others are having success using this method. But I need someone to explain this to my logical thinking mind. :p

BTW, I'm not a serial comber or styler. My hair is usually in a ponytail and I only comb once a day to put it into that ponytail. I always use a large tooth comb and a denman brush. I do lose some hair, but I think it's normal. Someone please set me straight. Nevertheless, I will try this for one wash cycle and see how it all pans out. :)

Its the less is more theory and depending on how you style your hair will determine the amount of tangles you will get. So far its working for me.
