Found My Childhood Photo Album....ARGGGH!!!!

I was beginning to become obsessed with looking at the children's hair in my family and at church because most of the people I know with long natural hair are....well children. So, to stop myself from stretching my nieces' and random children's (I know these children and their parents very well...but still bad, I know) hair out everytime I'm around them I went and pulled out my own childhood albums to see what my natural hair looked like long. I got so MAAAAD!! My hair was so long and thick and so....EVERYTHING I want it to be NOW!!!!! It brought back so many memories. Like the day I got my first relaxer I remember being so shocked that my hair was down to my WAIST!!! I had so much shrinkage that I never knew how long my hair actually was. Needless to say, my chunky childhood twists have now been added to my hair inspiration list. It also serves as a reminder of why I never need to put a relaxer on my hair again!! Has anyone else ever broken out the childhood albums and wondered where did all my hair go???!!!??? Do you ladies think its possible to get your childhood hair back??

That is so true! I wonder if its because childhood styles are mostly protective styles?? My mom used to press our hair once a week but she would put it right into twists or braids and leave it alone until next time. Even with the grease on the scalp and the dreaded hot comb it still grew out of control

You are also significantly smaller as a child. Your head is smaller, so yeah, your hair is going to look thicker. You are shorter, so yeah, hair is going to reach your waist, faster. Waist length is most likely what - 8-12 inches from nape on someone who is only 3 ft tall?

I really don't think comparing your hair as a child (pre-puberty/hormone-free, shorter, smaller, generally in better health/better diet) is a good guideline to determine what your hair is going to look like as an adult.



I might just be hating, though, because while my momma certainly did her best, she tore through my hair on a regular basis - maintaining her regimen on my head now would leave me bald.

Awww your pics are so cute. My hair was thick and close to sl when I was little, I think I have finally surprised my childhood length and I'm on my way to having a length I never thought possible. Childhood pics are great inspiration.

I agree, my hair was much thicker and longer as a child and while I have looked at some of my old pictures of my hair, my daughters length and thickness reminds me everday how my hair used to be.

My hair (albeit well kempt) was not what i ever wanted my hair to be! My mom tried her best I supposed but my hair never passed shoulder length under her watch. Her hair and my hair are way different textures so i guess that she did the best that she could

This is how my sister's hair was under my mom's care. We have completely different textures and my mom tried to handle her hair the same way she did mine. Her hair never grew past SL either. That's exactly why I dont listen to people who try to group all black textured hair together. One regimen does NOT work for all!

Girl, mine too! My sister had the long, luxurious hair, but my mom was always cutting mine! I would ask for a trim, and yep, she would give me a cut! I know my hair had the potential to be longer, but my mom just probably didn't want to deal with it. My sister and I are 7 years apart, but the thrill was apparently gone when it came to my haircare. From what I can see in older pictures, my edges always looked to' up erplexed. So when my mom tries to offer me advice about my hair now, I just smile and nod.

Oh how I loved my childhood photos.. my natural hair was thick long and luscious. Well I am on the right track to get to that point again! I love being natural already my thickness is back. Even my front hair line has been restored fully! Who knew that chemicals would erode my hairline like that... NO MORE. I am finally getting used to the shrinkage as well, especially the bigger my fro gets.

you guys are lucky i had very hair as a child erplexedbut i dont think it was due to bad treatment, i was natural and never had heat in my hair i think i got a press once for first communion(sp?), it was always braided and not tightly i guess my hair was just sturborn back then

You're not alone Kizzie... sometimes I get so upset looking back at pick of how my hair used to be, thick, long and just gorgeous. I'm not quite ready to go natural yet. But I definitely think it will be possible to get back the same lovely hair you had as a child

I think it was just because that's when my mom and sister stopped helping me with my hair cuz they said I was grown. I was virtually clueless on how to do rollersets, but my hairdresser said it was OK to do flat wraps, so I would always do that when I got frustrated with the rollers, but the only thing I put on my hair after washing it was wrap/set mousse, so it would dry crunchy in my crown where I couldn't wrap it around, and then broke off. For years after that I still wasn't getting the helpful advice to moisturize my hair like I got from here, and even though I finally learned how to rollerset my hair it was still dry as all get-out. I remember one of my previous hairdressers even suggested that I come back in for a PROTEIN treatment in my crown! Yikes! Fortunately I didn't opt for that lol. Then I had a couple of bad relaxers, one done by my mother and one by a friend of mine with her license to do hair which I'm beginning to think she must have forged lol! So that's where my nape and temples went.

Basically, there was nobody in my life who was fit to do my hair, including myself, once I got to high school. My hormones changing probably didn't help too much either. When I get home I'll try to find a good picture of my hair before all of these disasters and I'll post it. It was luscious! Hehe!

Aww the memories! I use to get teased so bad about my ponytails! My classmates use to call me "Cans" because my twist use to be that thick. My hair came ou severely when my mom put a Vigorol relaxer in my hair. SMH

yeah - my hair was long and thick - so was my moms and sisters - idk what happened. my sisters hair is finally long again, but alot thinner than it was in the 80s. My mom cut her hair, but it thinned out so much too (she is in her 50s now). My hair was so abused as a child but it just grew and grew. now im taking so much care of it and its like pulling teeth to see growth. If i knew then what i know now, i would have never relaxed it the first time.

I am convinced that you can regain the hair you had as a child. Its all about learning how to give your scalp and hair what it needs to keep it growing, and maintaining those ends. With a lot of love, time, and the combination of the right products your hair will respond, get healthier, and growwwwwwwww!!!

well- I wish I can join you on that - but I never recall having my natural hair past shoulder. My mom was like 3c and my sister was a normal long 3c/4a and my other sister, strong thick and long 4b, so having a finehaired short nappy 4a/4b was unlike anything she previously known. I was always told how when I was born, I had hair like the other side of the family,and I think the ease she had with doing hers and my sisters hair didn't come that way with me. I always remembered mommy adding extensions to my natural hair to "elongate" it. so this long hair care thing for me is to prove to myself that it can be done for ONCE in my life. I wish I can default on that it WAS done.

Anyhow you were very very cute and yes your hair was very pretty and I understand your obsession. lol I look at litle girls hair like that all the time. lol
