For me, fake hair is great as a method to help me grow healthy hair but I HAVE TO be able to access my real hair underneath very easily. By this I mean I cannot wear a weave or anything like that becasue I want to be able to wash and Deep Con, or moisturise my hair whenever I like. I have to be able to look at and inspect the condition of my hair whenever I want to and also check on it's progresss.

Thats why for me the best thing ever are phony ponies, because you can just bun your hair and pop it on over your real hair and take it off at night and moisturise it etc and I feel happy knowing that my real hair is protected underneath.

I had a weave only once years ago for about 6 weeks,, and when I took it out most of my hair had disappeared on one side. I would NEVER EVER get a weave again.

For me the aim is to grow my hair so beautifiul that I never have to wear fake hair again but in the mean time it is a great help and and a great relief because you don't have to worry i.e. if you just had a big trim (as I have) and you hate it cos its short I don't have to wear my hair short which I hate but I know my hair is healthy underneath.

I will never wear fake hair, because it won't match my own color and texture. It would look really fake, and I wouldn't be happy with it. Plus, I'd be worried about the fake hair damaging my real hair somehow.

Once upon a time I was anti-fake hair. The only thing I found acceptable was braid extensions. Anything else, I viewed as excessive and only for people who didn't have any hair. I've always loved my hair and thought wearing fake hair was somehow dishonoring it.

But oh how things have changed. I've worn everything from glued in tracks, to ponytails, to sew-ins, to wigs. One of the things I love about wearing fake hair is that you can experiment with different styles, cuts, lengths, textures, and colors without unnecessarily damaging or permanently changing your own hair.

My hair has always looked good regardless of what kind of hairstyle I wore. But over the years, my extension preferences and ability to take care of my own hair have definitely evolved. Everything ain't for everybody. But for me, wearing fake hair has been a stylish way for me to protect my hair while it grows.

ITA! Ain't nothing like going from long straight layers with hilites or short afro curly to wavy! I love weaves they offer so much versatility. I believe that with the right stylist who knows what they are doing you can have a nice realistic weave. Too many bad weave wearing "track mommas" walking around giving weaves a bad name. I believe that alot of the opinions on this thread would change if they had the proper weave (cut, texture & style) installed. For me weaves are a life saver in the cold hair drying winter.

I've loved fake hair since I was a teenager. Mostly because I sometimes have the serious urge to do crazy things with my hair so if I have a wig that fits the bill I'm good to go.

I stopped wearing it every day but for me it's nice. Occasionally I want SL burgundy and black spiral curls. And that will never ever grow out of my head.

My motto has always been: "it's mine I got the receipt"

I say yes! because it is less time consuming if you have a busy schedule and the hair receives less manipulation. When properly applied fake hair can be beneficial for most. I've worn braided extensions(never micro), sewn in weaves, both curly and straight(never glue), and half wigs on and off for over Ten years. Mostly for convenience of not having to comb my hair everday. Especially when trying to stay natural and working out, etc. However, since my step-sister told me about this site, I have been encouraged to tend to my natural hair(which is quite tedious). I don't know how you Lady's do it....especially those with children. During the past year I put in some twist with kinky extension got done with just the front and then took them all out. I sewed in a curly weave and took it out after five days. I had my hair braided(I used to put in extensions myself) and took those out after a week. Not to mention I have 6 packs of synthetic braiding hair, 5 different types of curly weave hair, and 2 curly half wigs waiting to be used! It just doesn't feel right anymore and I so want to give my hair a rest for the winter....I think that I've lost my love of fake hair

for me i started wearing braids when i reached 16 (although ive had some braids at certain times before this like at xmas or my brother's wedding) but from 16 i kinda got addicted  i loved how different they were how versatile they were you can put on different colours different lengths... i tried a weave once but i absolutely hated it it just felt too fake :drunk:

im 21 now and when i remove braids i wait bout 2 weeks and put new ones, the longest ive had without braids has been over the summer which was 3 months although i loved my hair and learnt to look after it i was uncomfortable with it when im in public and i dont knw why and this kinda upsets me :nono: i think if i cut it into a proper hairstyle i will be able to be more comfortable with what is growing out of my head and be able to rock it cus when i have braids i miss combing it and feeling my hair and washing it like normal:yawn: (sorry for the novel)

eta: micro braids last yr wreacked havoc on my hair line as well

i'm not opposed to it. i had a weave over the summer (first and last time :( ), and it didn't work for me, but i see plenty of women who wear fake hair that isn't jacked up, and that's great for them.

i'm looking into wigs now, but i'm afraid that i'll get attached to it, and once i do reach my hair goal, it just won't compare to the wig... if that makes sense.

I would never wear fake hair. If it's flowing down my back, I want it to because I worked hard and grew my own hair out :strong:

I wore weaves and braids for about three, four years until I got sick and tired of them. I thought they'd help me grow long locks and I'm sure I did get lots of growth but what ever length I got I had to cut because my ends were damaged and the front right side of my hair broke off severely from brushing my hair to blend in with the weave. I was never BSL from wearing weaves or braids so I'll stick to my current regimen sans fake hair.

I voted yes but was nervous at first because I use to think that I wasn't being true to myself if I had and all the other stigmas that come with it. Now that I've started wearing them (mainly falls) I have a tendency to not care what other people think. Plus the majority of the time they think it's my real hair. Besides that my hair is safely tucked away and is also growing nicely. And I'll keep wearing them until I get sick of them I guess :ohwell:

I have only tried extensions. One because I was never really big on doing my hair while in school and two, now I can do it myself (box braids like) and works for my lifestyle. I haven't tried weaves . .my sister has and she said they itch and i hear that a lot. But IDK it's steal weird to me ..the idea of me wearing a weave.

....I have, and I looked like a lion....

my philosophy = grow your own :yep:
it will save you money and the embarrasment of people checkin you...

I have....I think its a matter of how much hair you have, the conditon of your hair, and possibly age.
Someone with healthy shoulderlength hair or longer has something to work with and style versus someone with damaged eye length hair.
Someone who is 35 in a professional job thats been coming to work everday with her real hair may not feel comftorbale enough to show up to work with some micros like a 20 year old to school or work.

ITA with you Fluffylocks.

I've worn all types of fake hair, but for me it's more about looking natural...like myself. In a professional (conservative) workplace I can't show up to work with a sassy bob one day and MBL hair the next. I'd get tired of answering all the questions! :nono:

I like to wear sew-ins and cornrows extensions (I'm currently wearing a cute combo of the two, cornrows in the front which stop mid-way and fall into lush curly waves). For *me* I've found that my hair grows the fastest when in this state. I still take care of my daily moisture for my hair, and I also wash, so it's all good. I do agree with some of the other ladies about having the desire to be able to reach my "entire head" and make sure I'm keeping up with taking care of my tresses, so that's why I'll only weave it up for specific purposes and for only certain time periods. For example, I weaved it up in January '07 until June '07 which allowed me to go from chin length to shoulder length. I weaved it up in December '07 until this point because I'm like literally an inch away from APL and I'm in my last month of pregnancy and can pop any second :lachen:! I figure I don't want to be bothered with hair stuff while I'm in the hospital and the first few weeks after bringing the baby home.
I'm planning on ditching the weave at the end of February (I want to do a retouch on March 1st) and from then on just bunning with my own hair. I might get cornrows for the summer.
I don't feel any embarrassment or stigma attached to wearing fake hair, because I see it (braid/cornrow extensions and weaves) as useful protective styles and sometimes as a way to create various hairstyles (for example, instead of getting highlights/color on my own hair, I'd just get those strips of color sewn in).
So if you know that your hair thrives in braids or sew-ins, then more power to you, because it certainly was a big help in my hair journey!:yep:

I do it when I wear braids. I have always pondered getting one at least once.

"She say she never done it, she say she never tried, she lookin at you tellin you a mothaf^ckin lie"--- some rap song I thought fit with the topic lol... I just think some folks are so against weave but deep down they wish they had the courage to put one on. I know I used to feel that way. my sister hair is my length and she had a sew in for my moms wedding and now I want to try it. Its not lying if everyone knows its fake. If you pretend its yours, thats where you have issues.

She said she was Christian and she grew up in the church, said she'd stay a virgin for better or for worse.............

GIRL THAT USE TO BE MY SONG BACK IN THE DAY!!!! WHEWWWW THAT ALBUM BRINGS BACK SOME MEMORIES!!!!

anyways! I use t wear weaves and extensions, but extensions didn't do anything for me (worse them for years). Weaves were great in the sense that everytime i took it out my hair was longer...but my ends were chewed and my sides would break. However i have applied the concept to my regime now...i braid it and leave it alone, im trying to only touch my hair once a month (i usually only last 3 weeks) and my hair is THRIVING! However thee are some women who can weave and braid with extensions sucessfully, i wish i could do that! Im going through the ugly duckling phase...that will last about 2 yrs LMAO :lachen:

Most I ever had was braids and I would NOT suggest anyone getting them unless its your own hair. Last time I got them done ( and it was my LAST time) my edges broke off soooooooo very badly. Never will I be that vain again.

I've wore braids with extensions 5+ times over the past 15 years. I enjoy the fact that that they are very low maintenance. The down side is that it did mess up my edges for a little. I think that braids with extensions make styles more versatile. I've also worn glued in tracks (13 years ago which was a big no-no), phony ponies, and half wigs but not too often. I try to make sure that I get the ones that look close to being real. Occasionally, I go through stages where I don't wear them because I feel self conscious about them not looking real enough. Other times, I really don't care what people think.

I wear fake hair a lot. I wish that my own hair had that fullness and length, so that I would not have to.

I see nothing wrong with it myself. As long as the false hair is kept up and your real hair underneath is cared for.

I used to wear fake hair all the time. When I was in my early 20's, I NEVER wore my real hair. Wigs, ponytails, weaves, I even wore braids for almost 3 years straight.

I don't wear any fake hair at all now. Just not interested.

I've worn sew-ins and braids (zillions and cornrolls). But never again I think it all put a strain on my hair. But I will do a fake pony- tail.

I've only done weave when I got micros and even then having fake hair touching me took a lot of getting used to. Some of the ladies on her have had problems with micros, but I never have and I'd recommend them. As long as you get them professionally done & make sure they don't braid them too tight you should be fine.:yep:

The last two winters I got micros and wish I had this winter.

I'm considering maybe getting a weave to give my hair a break . . . or maybe even some braides . . . but I've never worn fake hair before . . . and being the unadventurous person that I am, it makes me a bit nervous . . . I'm wondering if anyone here has never worn fake hair either and, if not, why not? Also, was anyone like me and then took the plunge and has been weavin' it up ever since?

Thanks!

GG
oh girl, i was just like you a few months ago. on Halloween I had to work at this club downtown and decided to throw on a wig for that night because i was having a VERY bad hair day.it was my first time ever wearing one in my life.it was a blond costume wig with a bang and cut short into a bob. everybody thought it was cute. a couple months after that , i went into the hair store and decided to try on wigs for the hell of it. i finally picked out a nice half wig and I've had it ever since lol. it looks so much like my real hair and i dont feel nervous about wearing it in public. i figured , if i could wear that blond one which looks NOTHING like my hair and still get compliments, i could wear this half wig and not be embarassed. i only wear it on the weekends. and it works out for me, because i dont have to do anything to my hair during the week , cause it stays clipped up and away. then the weekends, i baggy under my wig. my ends are still in tact and thats alright with me.

I've worn everything but weave and would do that if I found a style I liked and a person I trusted to do it well (I live in an extremely small town).

I love to change my hair and will take advantage of an option in a hot minute. I prefer wigs because I can wear one for a day and be done if I want. At one point I owned several...donated them to a cancer patient. I own only one now but am looking to add more. My only problem with extensions is that after about 2 wks I'm bored. But I have a set in now.

I think once you get past the "it's fake" thing and just think of it as a hair style, it's no big deal.
