^^^^I totally understand. Just making sure we are on the same page because while many of us understand the basics, we also have newbies that are just learning the ropes and I think trimming ends is one of the subjects that people seem to have the most misinformation about for some reason.

I have not trimmed my ends or dusted since my BC in March...and a couple of weeks ago, I had to search and destroy my SSKs. I had no splits, but knots were peppered throughout my hair, more in the back than the front. I could see tiny pieces of hair starting to be found on my clothing and in the bathroom where I had seen NONE previously...

...so after a good wash and condition and detangle, I searched and destroyed those bad buddies. Now, I have no pieces of hair anywhere and my hair is smooth from root to tip. I also now keep my hair twisted or braided and only wear out if I am leaving the house. It seems my hair has a serious tendency to knot on the strands and that hinders progress for me.

I don't mind getting rid of those hairs since I want to retain what length I get. Also...I am starting to think I am a slow grower, so taking care of these knots is of the utmost importance to me. :yep:

I trim way too much. I had at least 2.5-3 inches cut off in 09. Most recently 1 inch in August. I'm trying not to trim until May 2010 for my birthday. In a perfect world I'd be hiding my hair until then anyway.

I don't trim or cut. I haven't done so since a BC in over 2 years.

Since July 07, I baggy and keep my ends moisturized and sealed and they are doing well.

Me too. I haven't had a hair cut in almost two years, and its really because I don't need to. My mother has been telling me I need to get my ends cut, but I don't see any damage so why bother? I will occasionally cut off ends that have knots.

Not sure if i already posted here since this thread is from 08...if so, excuse the dupe.

I havent trimmed since January 07. The main reason - i am a super slow grower. I only grow 1/4 a month which is 3 inches a year. I used to trim every three months (which i thought was a good amount of time) but i saw NO GROWTH. Now that i've stopped, i finally see growth. One day i may strive to have perfect ends, but for now it is impossible to have long hair AND perfect ends. I do s & ds CONSTANTLY, so hopefully i will be ok....

I wasn't sure how I shoud vote. I only cut my hair if I am bored by it which isn't that often. If you take care of your hair I don't think it needs to be cut/trimmed. I have gone 2 years without cutting. As of today my last cut was in March and I have no intentions of cutting it unless I want a particular style.

I will also say I have only needed to trim my hair when I was wearing it straight. Because then I would get split-ends. That is probably due to the flat-iron (I don't blowdry). However, when I wear it curly that is not necessasry since I don't get split-ends and I very rarely get knots.

nope, i don't get cuts, or trim. for me, it ruins the purpose of me growing my hair out. i bun daily, so there is zero need for me to have 100% even ends. it's been 7 months since my last trim, and it will probably be another 7 more before i consider going near scissors.

The other day I bought a new Remington Wet 2 Straight flat iron for $30 at Walgreens.

So, I get home and I wanted to try it out. I took two small sections of hair and straightened them (dry) and didn't like how raggedy my ends were looking so I got my goody shears and clipped at least half of inch of hair off for that "smooth" look. (Which I STILL didn't get!) :perplexed

I take a look at the hair in my hands and I noticed their wasn't a split end in sight! :nono: I couldn't believe that I had just cut perfectly healthy hair! :wallbash:

Then I thought about it and I realized, I haven't had my "ends" clipped in close to 3 years because I had locks for the last the 2 1/2. Why WEREN'T my ends split?! :scratchch After all that combing I did to unlock my hair, something had to have been torn or damaged...it's at this point I heard a voice from God say..."it's a ploy of the Man to make us cut our hair!"

I kid, I kid. But really, I start to wonder how real "split ends" are...for me, at least. :ohwell:

My sentiments exactly!!!!

Yea I'm not a fast grower either. I get less than a full 1/2" Maybe a 1/3"???? Plus my hair grows unevenly naturally. I am a "V" girl all the way. Blunt ends aren't for me or I will never make my goals. Anyway, I only trim as necessary. I do S & D as needed. Pre-LHCF I used to get trims regularly and saw growth on a small scale. I told myself no real trim until BSL. I am 1" away from APL so that means next year I will start trimming ends to make them look better. So, my answer is I am not trimming unless necessary. Retaining length is more important to me than how it looks.

It's been alot a year (11 months?) since my last trim. I have gone to the salon twice and asked "Do I NEED a trim?" after carefully going over my hair I was told NO. This year I did run into the deadly single strand knots which where tames with moisture to the ends and sealing. I rarely use direct heat so no splits. I think If you keep your ends happy and healthy you don't have to trim. Also my hair grow pretty even so I don't have to worry about Vs and Ws and Ms or whatever werid growth some people get.

I only cut the split ends on each hair.

The same for me. I almost never see a split end (probably once a year) but when I do, I cut that individual hair and that's it.

I do an overall trim ONLY once a year. I do that because sometimes, the ends become thin and I have really fine hair. So trimming just once a year keeps those ends from just breaking off.

If you don't manipulate your hair that much, there's little need for regular trims. Keeping the hair moist and those ends moistened and sealed will help make those regular hair trims unnecessary.

SSKs are the reason I dusted once this year. I think I can search and destroy the knots as needed and keep it moving. Knots tangle my hair around itself and I pull hair out. Destroying the SSKs is helpful for my growth, even though they are not always perfectly at the end of the strands.

I have no split hairs, thank goodness.

I haven't had a trim since October 08. I DO however plan on getting one at the end of the year. I don't plan on getting my ends trimmed but once a year until I reach my hair goal.

I don't use heat
I am constantly in protective styles
I don't straighten my hair

There is no need for me to trim.

My hair is always in cornrows under my wig so I find no reason to dust, trim, or cut. However, when I reach my ultimate goal (WL) I will definitely start chopping cos last time a scissors came near my hair (dec. 08) my stylist gave me some banging layers. bitter-sweet :)
