I agree with the op as well I have been holding on to about an inch or to of bad ends because I was afraid to lose the length so I baggied for months and once my hair grew 2 inches I chopped the thin ends and the differance in my hair is crazy:eek: it is so thick healthy and even now I dont know what I was so scared of.

O this thread is a breath of fresh air. Thank u for posting this and ITA with every thing u said. I havent had a trim in over a year and I am noticing my ends thinning out. I was too scared because i didnt want to lose any length but sometimes... a good trim will do the trick. I won't fail any of my challenges but when Im done in april, I am running to the salon!

ITA. My hair was ravaged by color. I ended up getting my ends chopped and now it looks thicker (even though it's the same thin fine hair I've always had.) Holding onto damaged hair actually sets you back farther than if you just get a good trim and be done with it IMHO.

and after....

Yes the more I started taking care of my hair properly the more confident I got about trimming away the damage. I now dust once a month and after I transition completely I will do a trim every two months as needed.I LOVE thick ends.:D addicted

I know that a lot of us do not want to lose what we worked so damn hard to achieve! However, sometimes you just have to cut/trim your hair to rid yourself of the damage.

I have seen so many peoples damaged heads, do a complete transformation into a healthy head of hair because they allow a nice trim or start fresh with a cut. (not a shave your head bald cut)

I mean just the thickness and fullness alone from a trim speaks volumes. Especially if you intend to hide your hair, I always assumed that you were supposed to hide your ends from being damaged/split if that is true! what is the point of hiding a bunch of already damaged ends that are already split

I am not referring to those of us that trim, and do not need a trim for another couple of months because they have been caring for and hiding their ends!!! hell thats why you don't need a cut in the first place...you already trimmed and maintained!!!

I am not saying get scissor happy at all. What I am saying though is that sometimes there ain't enough moisture/protein/MTG/monistat/herbal oils/special rinses/coconut milk to save a sisters head.

Sometimes my ladies, you just need a trim

i agree!! i cut about 3 inches off in feb. and i have not straightened my hair since then. i can't wait to see if it has grown the next i straighten.

Too true! I started my hair journey with a good cut and a protein treatment. I'm also tempted when reading about ladies who don't have to trim, but I know my baby fine hair and it cannot go any longer than 12 weeks without a trim. I will start losing it quick if I don't. I'm striving for brastrap, but I won't risk the progress I have already made by not trimming on schedule. In fact, I'm due for a "trim by the moon for length" this Sunday!;)

I agree with this. I've shaved my head several times.

But I will say...don't go overboard.

Anytime something was wrong with my hair, I would cut it. I would just cut and cut and cut. My hair is all uneven because of this. Then I started cutting to try to even it up. If I saw ONE SPLIT END, 2 inches of hair would be all over my sink because I'd just keep cutting.

I did a bald shave in 96, 2001, jan of 2003 and I cut it to my ears at the end of 2005. I've cut about 9-12 inches here and there since 2005.

I get so frustrated with my hair. The top of my hair grows so fast...close to an inch a month, then the back 1/4 of my head grows at a snails rate so I keep cutting to even it up.

Sometimes a cut is the answer...but sometimes the answer is to just let your hair do what it wants to do. Split ends are normal to some degree, uneven hair is normal, too, in some ways. Hair being thicker on one side vs the other is normal, too.

I think we get so concerned with our hair looking full at the bottom, having a V or U shape or a blunt cut, or having our layers fall a certain way that stylists have trained us to solve our problems with scissors.

I never expected to keep my prejourney hair so last year (December 2006), when I found myself needing a 4 inch trim, I wasn't disappointed. I don't expect I'll need that deep of a trim again, but it was absolutely necessary for me to feel and see the healthy hair I'd worked so hard for.

Hello,
OP, you're right. I know you're right. But try telling that to the scraggles of APL length hair on the back o' my head that ran screaming for the hills as soon as the trimming shears came out.

Last week I got fed up so I hacked 'em off myself. So now I'm back to a scruffy looking SL length and I've made an appt. with a stylist to get a cut or deep trim (I hope) this Friday. I know its for the best but damn. My other worry is that I've got a squarish face so a short cut will probably be anything but flattering on me. Aah well.

A trim is sometimes what you need. I cut 3 inches off twice last year from overprocessing and color damage and it totally changed my hair. Also by staying consistent with your trims, you prevent having to need huge ones later. I will probably go get one next relaxer. Just don't cut 2 inches off everytime. Just a dusting usually does the job.
