My hair color is two toned right now. I had my hair colored auburn last year and never touched up the color. I have since decided to grow it out. So now I have about 5" of black hair and the last 2" or so(the ends) are auburn. Sometimes I like the look and other times I just yearn to have my whole head my natural color. With 2 or 3 more trims I should be there.

You can also achieve this look by just dyeing the ends of your hair - I think it's called "tipping".

As with any chemical process, as long as you take care of your hair after you color it you shouldn't have a problem. With conditioning treatments and constantly keeping your hair moisturized I don't foresee a problem.

Good luck if you decide to go for it!

so, lemme give you a scenario and you tell me if its doable....

lets say i get a lightener, and take my ends like 3 or 4 shades lighter....and then i get my favorite color rinse...will i end up with dark roots and, say, bright red ends??? also, if i use a chemical lightener, will it be a bad idea to use henna in my hair??

thanks in advance!

I had black/brown roots and bright red/copper ends for a while. I had blonde highlights that were growing out and old. I rinsed copper a few times and the results were nice. I just couldn't keep up with the rinse, though. It would wear out after a week and I'd end up with those same brassy ends. I evened it out finally. That effect can be cut if it's only on the ends of your hair. To me half and half looks strange.
BTW, love your fro Shatani. It looks so healthy

As for the answer of regular dyes and using henna:
It cannot be said too many times...always perform a harvest hair test prior to using any henna product on your hair. This can keep you from screaming later. There are too many products on the market with additives undisclosed for you to assume that you know what is in the products you have used on your hair in the past. Only the harvest hair test will allow you to know if henna powder is compatible with whatever you have used on your hair in the past...if you still have residue of those products in your hair...And will let you know if your henna'd hair is compatible with something you want to use in the future.
When you choose to use henna or herbal/henna on your hair, do so knowing that you are making a long term commitment to the use of henna as your hair colorant and conditioner. This means that you will want to carefully select the other products you use with your henna choice. If you have been using protein conditioners in the past, know that you will no longer have to or want to use them with your henna. Henna will provide all of the strength your hair needs. You will probably need to include a good deep moisturizing treatment to your hair regimen using a good moisturizing oil.

I have the top half of my hair light light blonde and the bottom half is my natural color dark dark brown.

i'm not natural though.

i just section of the top part like doing half up half down and only dye/color the top portion.

it's pretty easy.

what colors were you thinking of for yourself?

[/ QUOTE ]thanks ms kenesha....thats really helpful to me....i like the idea of henna because it strengthens and softens and ive seen a lot of people rave about it....but i also like the color thing too...i know that because my hair is basically black, i prolly wont get much color...thats why i was thinking about the lightener....but i will be VERY careful with mixing natural and chemical so as to avoid baldness!!

but i have some time to think about this, cuz i wont be doing a color before next year...off the top of your head, do you know of any chemical lighteners or colorants that are definitely NOT compatible with henna, ever??? or does it all differ head of hair to head of hair?

[/ QUOTE ]im thinkking of just having the tips (like the bottom 3 or 4 inches) of my hair be a bright color....ive always loved that look, and then i came across Mecca's album and ive been on a mission to find out as much as possible!!

im thinking of a chemical lightener so that i can do color rinses and have the ends be any color from red to orange to pink to blue! i love versatility....i know you cant get blue from henna, but henna has benefits that far outweigh my desire for blue hair!
