He was only being honest, as more people should be.:look:

I personally was shocked when I first stumbled across LCHF and found all these beautiful heads of hair.

My DH is the reason I even found this site. He used to beg me to stop wearing fake hair because he thought my own hair was beautiful. When I expressed how I felt about having short hair, he helped me research hair growth for AA women.

When I started my hair growing journey, we put all of my weave into a box and had a funeral service for it before throwing it all in the trash (and it was a lot of fake hair!)

And thanks to LHCF, I've never looked back!

I have also heard from black men who have told me to my face that they don't think black women can grow long hair. If she does have long hair, it's a weave :rolleyes:

my own mom feels like that. I showed her some pics on the site and she's like, "Do you really believe that?" :ohwell: And then when I showed her someone else's pic she thought she was mixed :rolleyes:
 
To the OP, I am not mad at ur DH. Most black people don't beleive that we can have lon luscious hair or assume you are mixed if you do, so ur DH thinking that...... :look: I'm not surprised. I mean how would he know, if most of us don't:ohwell:
 
My DH, who is black, had a similar reaction when I joined the forum a few years back. I would show him heads of midback and waist-length hair and his thoughts were either the woman was not just black (ie, biracial, multiracial) or that the hair was a weave. Now that my hair is midback (which he LOVES btw), he acknowledges that he was wrong.
 
Well OP you are just going to have to prove your hubby wrong! And grow your real hair long so it's swinging down your back!

my mom used to tell me stories about when she was my age (23) and in the working world back in the 70s....a lot of Caucasian women would constantly ask her about her super long, silky hair saying stuff like "I didn't know black women could grow long hair.." or "you know, black people's hair doesn't grow.." blah blah.
i guess it's just a common misconception, which is sad and telling of our society. :ohwell:

Since we KNOW we can grow our hair long, why don't you make him put his money where his mouth is. A bet is in order. Make it something good. Just don't gloat TOO much when you win the bet.

Don't feel so bad about what your husband says. 90% of the black population feel the same way, we are pioneers in growing our hair long, and we have got success from this board. We discuss our ideas and we learn from each other. God be praised for a board like this. All the ladies are positive and this positivity helps us all to be successful. The hair industry is one of the most money making industries in the world. Afro texturised is worth billions of dollars. Hair shops are opening every week. Hair shops in the UK and becoming the next supermarket, prime example Pak Hair shop, in North London is a hair supermarket. When I went to the Black Hair and Beauty shop last year at Alexandra Palace, the place was packed with hair companies, the sponsorship is getting bigger and bigger. Ignorance is bliss, more ignorance more dollar/pounds/euros coming in. Everyone is selling more products to grow your hair longer, etc. Simple things such as a good supplements, eating good quality food, exercise, moisturing, essential oils, good quality products are more effective and we are getting the results.
 
Yeah it is a steortype for us that one has to be mixed. This forum knocks out that theory, which is why I'm sure the OP was showing her DH the fotki journals.
 
The truth is, as many of you have already stated is that many of our own people from Africa or the African diaspora feel the same way. So, I can't knock someone of a different race who feels the same way-he probably heard it from someone black anyway.:grin:
 
my roommate and I were watching Top Model from last season where they cut the one black (maybe mixed) girls hair off and made her look like a transvestite. I said "Oh no, you dont cut a black girls hair off!" and she was like "Right, because doesn't black hair not grow??" I schooled her really quick. I was like, "Black hair grows at the same rate as white hair, but our hair is dryer so it breaks more easily. The real probably is black people have a harder time retaining their growth." So hopefully I changed her opinions but who knows.
 
Just tell you DH thanks for the comment on AA women, I work years for the health and length of my hair and it looks that good I succeeded.:grin:

Unfortunately, a lot of people think that way. I cannot tell you how many times (weekly) people ask me if I wear a weave. We CAN grow long hair, so your job is to prove him wrong! HHG....

oh my gosh! i wish you can create a thread on this! the misconceptions! you are so right ! i wish people can just understand our hair grows at the same rate.. its just drier and therefore, breaks easier!!!

But, its okay. Its happened to me before, too. But, remember... long hair has REALLY only been in style since about 2006. Before then, it was about the Nicole Bob, The Halle Crop, and the Beyonce Braids. Hair styles are always changing and I think that black women are the only ones who are so daring with their hair to rock every single one. Now, its all about crazy color, and the Assymetrical cut like Saleisha and Kelis.
