Crown & Glory Challenge 2014

I need to buy an applicator bottle, one for water based leave-in and another for oil based tomorrow. im going to try the s-curl....if the scent is better

i DID it! Woot! I wanted to quit soo bad in the beginning cause I couldn't get the twists to stay no matter how many youtube vids I watched. Took me seven hours.

Looks good beauti!

So far I've had my braids (own hair) in for a week. I am working out and applying sulfur oil, so I will be co-washing or shampooing them weekly. I also moisturize and seal them every other night.

The only thing that is different than my normal reggie is the fact that they are braids instead of twists and I will keep them in for at least 4 weeks. That means I won't finger detangle or manipulate my hair loose for weekly like I was before. I hope I see more retention this way.

washed my hair with vo5 kiwi clarifying conditioner mixed with creamy aloe clarifying shampoo. Followef up by dcing with ntm dc and shea moisture intensive repair for 30 min. Rinsed with cold water and applied aloe/water/oil/vo5 spray and shea moisture intensive repair conditionrr as a leave in. My hair is so soft and defined. Getting it braided in a beehive today.

2 Week mark:
Washed my crochet braids with diluted organix macadamia shampoo.
DC-ing currently with diluted ORS Replenishing Conditioner.
Will hydrate with S-Curl and oil with sweet almond oil.
Air dry or blow dry if it's still too wet for me to sleep.

Hi Austro-Afrikana, I would love to join this challenge. I self-installed braids a few days after Christmas.

Back in 2005, I had much success with the Crown and Glory method. More recently, I've seen the best retention for my daughter whose been on C&G for over 2 years now. Her hair has thickened up dramatically.

After some setbacks, this year I've grown mine from collar bone to APL (presently). I did not measure before installing, so I'll be sure to do that next installment.

Thanks for the tip on sponge moisturizing! I've sponged-shampoo'd my daughter's hair but never sponge-moisturized. I've simply sprayed on. Thanks for that technique and this challenge.

Hey ladies, I'm looking forward to this challenge. I'm a newbie to this site, but not to the C&G method. It's just been awhile since I've done it. I've had this same set of braids for 2 wks & I plan to re-braid in a couple of weeks or so if my schedule permits. I use s-curl for moisture & seal w/hot 6 oil. I also have a sulfur mix I just started using this week. I'll probably only sulfur 2-3x's a week. Not a fan of the smell:/

Current length: 2"-8" due to a hawk cut this summer
Year end goal: SL & healthy
Installed: 12/21/13
Next Install: 1/18/14

Chula, what type of hair did you use in these pics? I like it.

I co-washed yesterday with Tresemme then moisturized w/S-curl & sealed with Argon oil. Can't wait to take these out next weekend so I can measure & re-braid. I have so much new growth!

Thanks Lady Esquire. It's the jumbo Kankelion braiding hair. It's like $2.50 a bag. I braid it half way down, then i take a section of braids & braid them into 1 larger braid & dip that into hot water w/a lil oil added to it for about 45 seconds. I end up having about 6-8 large braids all over my head. I've done this technique using rollers to on shorter braids too.

Questions about braids for the ladies of this challenge.

1) the base of my braids and inbetween them are getting fuzzy. How to correct this? What's happening?

2) my ends are starting to stick out of my braids. Why? How to correct?

3) I've been in braids for 3 weeks now. If they are already getting fuzzy, can they last another 2 months?

This may or may not help , but for the time being:
If you know how to braid, you can re-do the visible braids in the front to give your whole head a fresher look.
As for the rest of the fuzz, what I do sometimes when I have braids is lightly mist them with water, smooth a butter like shea butter over them, then wrap them with a satin scarf to go to sleep , so that by the next morning the fuzziness is temporarily flattened down. Hope that helps a bit.

I just noticed this challenge and am really interested! Austro-Afrikana, your braid regimen piqued my interest. Do you have it detailed somewhere? I want to try it, as I've not worn braids in 10 years! and feel that I need to for the next few months.

I just posted a thread on braid maintenance questions, and I'd love it if you could contribute... or in this thread!

beauti, I LOVE your braids! What are those called? What kind of hair is that? I think that's the style I want, but I am so un-knowledgeable about this.

If I understand you correctly, this sounds like new growth which is great. You can re-braid the perimeter to keep your style fresh every couple of weeks or so.

2) my ends are starting to stick out of my braids. Why? How to correct?

I'm not sure if this can be corrected w/o re braiding. I've heard of some ladies using gel on the ends to smooth/blend into the braid hair. I'm not a fan of gel because it can be drying & cause build-up.

3) I've been in braids for 3 weeks now. If they are already getting fuzzy, can they last another 2 months?
Your braids can last if you keep them tied up & clean. I tend to get bored with my hair quickly so I re-braid every 3-4 wks or so. But this may not be possible for most ppl. I would just suggest keeping the perimeter fresh & neat & again keeping them tied up at night.

HTH

CarLiTa thank you. I used marley hair and just watched youtube tutorials on the twists I liked the most. I followed the havanna twist tutorials, the invisible root method. So these are havanna twists on marley hair.

Chula I don't like the sound of gel either. Would mousse work?

CarLiTa Thanks. They are regular box braids with Xpressions Kanekalon hair in number 4. I have just put my hair in a ponytail with a hump in that style.

My regimen is what I have written on the first page. I follow it religiously.

This is quite normal however, you can reduce it by not rubbing your scalp and by wrapping your hair whenever you are laying around.

2) my ends are starting to stick out of my braids. Why? How to correct?

If your hair is short or has been freshly cut then the ends are likely to stick out. Otherwise the braids may be a bit loose.

3) I've been in braids for 3 weeks now. If they are already getting fuzzy, can they last another 2 months?

I have had mine for two weeks and they are slightly fuzzy. I just redo the perimeter and the part every 2-3 weeks to keep it looking neat.

I personally haven't tried mousse, but I imagine it would work. But I don't think it would be long lasting. Maybe if its applied to your ends while its being braided. Not after. Sometimes i'll add a heavy moisturizer like Elasta QP Olive oil Mango Butter to my ends just before I reach the end of the braid. That helps blend my hair into the braid hair. HTH

Checking in. Oiled scalp twice today with jbco, misted braids with water mixed with a tad bit of aphogee provitamin leave in/rosemary eo, worked out and took all my vits. all is well.

checking in, starting to see some new growth (i think)
ive just been misting daily with water/aphogee/rosemary mix and oiling scalp with JBCO/sulfur mix., and taking vits.

I co-washed again last night with Suave professionals Almond & Shea Butter. I can't wait to re-do my braids this weekend. If I weren't so busy, I'd be doing it tonight. But I want to deep condition, so I'll need to take my time this weekend. I was thinking of switching my braid style up & going with a short bob like Jada's in Set it Off. Everyone is doing long braids, I'd like to stand out a bit. We'll see, I'll post pix next week.

Need to touch up dd's braids this weekend. I use a spray bottle from family dollar instead of the sponge method. I need to get another one for the infusium. She is 12 and not feeling my lets spray your hair demand but she will thank me later! !

washed my twists today. Concentrated shampoo on scalp only and conditioner on length only. Sprayed with braid spritz, sealed with sweet almond oil.

I think I will redo a few of the braids this weekend. It's been two weeks and they are looking fuzzy. I see some stray hairs escaping. I know it's because I used my own hair. I also noticed a little breakage at the ends of them when I was moisturizing the other day. I will do a light protein treatment on them to see if that helps. If not, I will spray a bit of Aphogee Green Tea & Keratin on them.

I wear them tucked in a bun or two little buns, or braided up. I actually can't wait to take them out in two weeks. I won't wear my hair out, but I will bun or go back to twists for two weeks. Then depending on how my hair has done with the braids, I will reinstall them with my own hair or I'll do a synthetic set.

Here are my details:

(Yes, I am claiming that I WILL ACHIEVE my goal and the victory is mine!)

Having a plan will help me succeed. My above schedule will help me stay on top of my hair and the challenge as well as help me achieve my goal.

This is EXACTLY what I did, plan out my install, takedown, rest for the entire year...lol
I will be posting my schedule as soon as I install my braids. It should take me 2 days between breaks and work to install them. I haven't decided on what hair, length or size I want my braids to be yet. I'm picking up the hair after work tonight and I'll start either tonight or tomorrow...

Cowashed my.braids the other day, and that really messed.them up. So from now on, no more cowashing braids (atleast til my hair is longer). Ill just get them redone every 2-3 weeks and do a super dc in between.
