Can anyone tell me my hair type?

hairsothick , I'm a 4 and you can see my clumped curls very well, and when I unravel them, they form clumped S shaped clumped spirals....wet or dry. All my hair wants to do is clump and curl.

I didn't say that type 4 hair didn't clump. I said it doesn't clump as easily as type 3 hair does. I'm talking about clumps of curls that are visible from a distance. The hair in the crown of my head clumps together, but you can't see it unless you are inches away from my head.

I JUST SAW YOUR FOTKI:drool::drool: I see your dilemma with a bit of 4a http://public.fotki.com/Morenita-/natural-1/natural/firsttwistoutonnatu.html "maybe: in you crown?? I agree w/ your homepage majority of your hair is 3c
you are a great example of a slight mix... but with much lower percentage of 4a in there... you could still rep 3c:grin:

tHENATuRALhAiRpRoJEcT :thankyou: Not really my crown (that's the wavy/frizzy part), possibly the small section below my crown though. It's super duper frizzy and harder to define than the rest of my hair. Probably the very edge of my hairline as well.

I'm so late but I just renewed my subscription and it feels so GOOD TO POST!!! W00t!!

I think you are 4a/b OP. :)

I think that's where people get confused. IMO, texture and pattern together determines hair type. A type 3 can have s-curls and coils, but have hair that is fine and silky making it easier for their hair to clump together with no assistance whatsoever, while a type 4 can have those same shaped curls and coils (maybe not the same size, but the same shape) and have coarse hair making it hard for their curls to clump without assistance.

I think this becomes most confusing when comparing a 3 c to a 4a because they are so close. The silky/fine vs coarse is the difference maker IMO.

This is not true if you are using Andre's number system. The numbers 1 - 4 only account for the size of the curl. He does not include texture in his classifications. This is why his system is flawed. If you want to type hair according to texture, curl size and curl type the LOIS hair typing system has categories for that. I have seen silky type 4a and I have seen coarse type 1, 2, 3, and 4s.

I was speaking in general and the I know about the LOIS system and I still stick to what I said.

I just posted MY OPINION you guys. Sheesh!

Hey OP, you have beautiful hair and I used to care about typing, but now I don't, you know what? Because Andre is full of $hit (yea I said it), I claim 4A because it's the easiest, but the longer (or bigger I should say) my hair gets, the curlier it gets and not little hard to find curls, but big easy to spot curls. I see a lot of hair typing threads and I just don't think it's necessary to really know, you know? I know I have think kinky hair that hates any hard protein and loves moisture (water the most) and it likes to be left alone, find out those things about your hair and whether it's kinky or curly, it will treat you right...just my humble opinion, but I would say 4B with some 4A (but it matters but a little)

I'm starting to realize that hair type is not even really important b/c it's something someone just came up with what i think matters is porosity right?

Okay ladies so I am officially boycotting the hair typing system's( Andre's, LOIS, etc). @ everyone I thank all of you for being so kind and informative with helping me to understand more about curl type, but at the same time it is still very confusing to me. The reason is because some say curl pattern goes along with texture and then others say curl pattern and texture are two totally different things! Therefore I have come to the conclusion that everyones hair is unique in it's own way for instance, I was confused with being a 3C because of the fact that I have some parts that are silky and fine hair, but when I checked the curl pattern my curls were just as tight as any of the other curls on my head with a coarser texture. I think that it just depends on the uniqueness of your hair. Some people have a tight curl pattern but their hair is very silky. Some people have waves or a very loose curl pattern and yet their hair is more kinky in texture. I don't think there is one standard. I also have noticed that the part where I was asking you ladies what curl type would it be considered where my bang does not curl but instead waves and clumps together perfectly. No one ever really answered that question so I'm assuming that none of you ladies know what that curl type would be and even though it's wavy and usually wavy hair has the stigma attached to it that it has to be very silky but actually my hair is kinky in texture where my waves are. On another note, the hair typing system has completely confused me but I agree with pretty much all of you ladies that I am a 4a/4b for the most part with the exception of my bangs. And I just wanted to say that all of you ladies on here have stunningly beautiful hair and I really appreciate the feedback on this thread from all of you. I have recently come to realize that my hair type is beautiful and I should go by what I think about my hair and not what Andre thinks about it and I would encourage all of you ladies who are also a little bit confused about hair type or maybe too concerned about hair type to also do the same. Be blessed and beautiful ladies.

:yep: What's important is finding techniques and products that work for your own individual head of hair.

I agree 100%. While it's fun to look at the beautiful diversity of our natural hair in all its different shapes and forms, most of us need to do the same things...moisturize, protect, oil, love and leave our hair alone 99% of the time.

Keep it simple, and you will see results. That goes for all hair types from 1-4. :yep:

There are some techniques that suit certain hair types better, but all in all, it's so hard to compare one head of hair to another.

I really enjoy looking at all the hair types here... :)

Also, OP, you have to realize that people here haven't seen your hair in person. I think the only way to be sure is to actually see the hair because pictures don't always come out the way things reallllly look. So honestly, you are the best judge of what your hair is since you have seen it , played with it, and etc. That would be like me seeing a picture of someone and then telling them how much they weigh or something lol. People look different in photos, so it is hard to accurately judge things like that imo.

The bolded is very true :yep:

My "in person" hair looks a little different than my "pic hair"

I too have boycotted the "hair typing" system! :swearing: Power to the people!!!!

I found these threads and questions about hairtyping annoying and stupid! What's the point and if you're really desperate to know, how can't you not figure this out on your own?

Good post, op and a great place to end the discussion.
