*BEWARE* OF Internet HAIR Pirators!

ITA. This was really blown out of proportion. The OP on BHM didn't mean any harm. Yes she should have asked for permission first before posting. But threatening legal action over hair pics was a bit extra IMO.

I agree, and posting about it here and getting everyone all heated is unnecessary.

I guess I'm in the minority...I would take it as a compliment. Somehow it seems that all of this was blown out of proportion here and over there. But, then again, no one's borrowing my pics and praising my hair/growth/progress...so... :ohwell:
Im with you, because what about pictures that are taken of celebs and sorts that are posted? I kinda feel sorry for ol girl.

Sorry , but I have to agree with Kiwi, Nita, and all others who said this may have been blown out of proportion.

OT: someone created a list of people's fotki album links along with passwords.....mine's was one of them. It made me slightly uncomfortable but I realize that having ANYTHING online, I run the risk of people lifting the info and using it as they please. At first I was upset, then I shrugged it off realizing that the creator of the list just probably wanted to show albums of fotkis that she likes.

Isn't the passwords in your profile there because they should be private and not used by someone else to give out to others? Now, if someone has done that, then I have a problem with that. :yep:

Nice & Wavy, you are correct. I have to be honest, the real reason I didn't get full blown upset is because at the moment my fotki is open and has been for a few months. But yes, I think it's presumptuous to reveal passwords to random people who shouldn't have them. (I just did a quick google search to remind myself of who has it up) The person is a member LHCF, so when I get ready to lock it again, I'll shoot her a PM to take it down :yep:

It is presumptuous and not cool. Although my fotki is open now as well, when I do choose to put a lock on it and have a password put on it and choose to only share my password with the Members of this forum, I would expect that the members of this forum will respect me enough to NOT give my password out to those they felt like giving them too because they thought my hair looked nice...just doesn't cut it for me.

I can understand where you are coming from though.

Blessings!

While I have conflicting thoughts about the issue...I was really surprised about the fact that a lot of women think that the idea of reposting someones pictures is not a problem. I mean...I think that this all could have ended/been a lot different if the original OP on BHM had just posted a like to Chavas album about some awesome growth and advised others to check it out.

That being said, I will now be locking my album and putting my password in my LHCF profile. While one of the posters on BHM said that this is a common practice of using eachothers photos on the boards I do not recall seeing it happen here and I would like it to stay that way. I mean...maybe it's board culture...but when we want to "call someone out" for great progress it seems like we link to their album. Could be wrong. My .02.

From reading your original post, it would sound like the young lady used your pics to pretend as if they were her own.

Now I see that she was just making a thread to encourage others and give you compliments. Should she have gotten her facts straight? YES! Is it that serious to where you have to threaten to to involve legal actions? NO.

The "Hair Care Tips and Product Review Discussion" is accessible to all, so that's the risk that one takes when posting pictures on a very public message board.

Take care, and yes, in the end, everyone should still be aware of what could happen to pictures.

EXACTLY what she said

I agree.

When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought someone used someone else's pictures and pretended that was their hair. Or that someone created some scam hair product and used someone's picure as a before and after customer.

If that had happend to me, I would've just posted "That's wrong, here's my real regimine and here's a link" and then went about my day.

it has happened here.

I agree with this whole post

Even though she meant no harm, I think she should have asked permission.

The thing I could not believe was the fact that many of the posters on BHM saw nothing wrong with it. Had that been them all h**l would have broke lose.

thats some fabulous growth missy... I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY need to get me some QUICKLY!!!! thinks of how much growth I could of had if I had taken mn seriously :spinning:

man, when i read the title of this thread i thought homegirl was pretending to be you or something.

she just said you had great growth and misspoke some details...
I don't see a big problem here.
Do we get the photographers permission before posting pix of beyonce etc?

Did we call that little girl w/ hair to her knees and ask her if we could post her stuff here?
So why the drama?

I agree. I also saw that the lady apologized in that thread. In her apology she stated that OP here was nasty in the pm. Not saying you have to accept the apology ....but afterwards she's posting links about copywright stuff....like come on....don't drag it out.

I'm not upset about her posting the pics; hell, I expect Beyonce a** to serve me with papers anyday now, all the illegal photo downloading I be doin!! I'm not even mad she misquoted your growth, because it clearly states on the bottom of your picture what's what. I'm upset over how the ladies over on the other board seem to be about your "outrage". Yes, I understand that this is the internet and that's what's going to happen; but at the same time, don't you have some pretense yo be a little upset? I would hate anybody's picture to show up on say, a board promoting some product they didn't use and the company say, "it's okay, it was on the internet" You know? If I'm by myself on this, damn, it's the lawyer in me...my 2 cents.

Honestly, if you don't want someone to "steal" your pictures, then don't post them online. :look: I am not a member of BHM, but I did read the thread on there. I googled it. One member on BHM brought up a very good pt. : What is the difference btwn posting the actual pics on BHM and posting a link to the LHCF? :ohwell:

I'm not saying that the BHM member was right in posting the pics w/o information. Perhaps, it would've been nice for her to ask for permission. But we cannot forget there are predators, etc. online who will take your pics and do whatever they want w/them. :yep: They could even cut off your head and post it on another person's body. Is it right? No. But, the fact that it is wrong will not stop them from doing it. :nono:

We cannot control other people. We can only control ourselves, so we have to take precautions. :yep: I'm sure that the BHM member and some of the other members on BOTH boards have learned smthg from this though and know that it is preferred to ask for permission first.

With all that said, OP, I am sorry that this happened to you. :(

Also, I would like to add that there are some pics of the hair of some of the members of this board on lipstickalley too. I was wondering if anyone asked for their permission b4 they cut and pasted it on the other site. :ohwell: :(

Honestly, I think it would be nice if there was a way to post the pics and make it impossible to take the pics w/o permission. :look: I know that there are some sites that u cannot take the pics from.

I totally agree with you both. Whoa DRAMA!

ITA. i also expected to see someone on bhm pretending to be you. she should have got your permission first and got her facts straight but i think she was just genuinely naive. she didn't mean to cause any harm, imo. some people realise why it's not smart to use someone's pics when they don't have permission and others just do not know why it's that serious. people just don't take copyright rules on the net that seriously especially if you're not a big organisation. the legal threats weren't really warranted nor the four posts with gigantic red text...you could have just pm'ed her to make the corrections and/or take down the photos. i think the only caused problems and drama within the thread. jmho...

Seriously.
In defense of the OP, I really don't think she meant any drama to come out of this, just like the OP over at BHM didn't either.

Actually, I kinda long for the day for someone to admire my hair on another board.

Actually, I would feel violated if they posted my pic on another board without my permission even though it wasn't done with ill intentions.

Actually, I would probably get over feeling violated and start feeling a bit appreciated.

Actually, if I could see the person really meant no harm, I would PM her and let her know that I really was shocked that I inspired her, but next time please ask for my permission before using my photos.

Actually, I am guilty of posting someone's hair pics on this board:blush: I just get excited for 'us!'

Actually, if the violated party approached me about being in the wrong about copying their pics, I would understand and feel a bit hurt, but I would NOT act like it ain't a big deal.

I've been on both sides of the fence so I feel where OP here is coming from and OP over a BHM.

Seriously....

L.Y.L.A.S.!!
