Are We Obsessed?????

Just got back from my regular 'product' run; 2 satin pillowcases/2 bottles biotin/2 bottles of shampoo/2 conditioners/1 reconstructer/3 leave in conditioners. Woo Hoo!!! I was all excited when I got the counter and the sales women made a snide (although interesting) comment. She said, "I would love to have hair like yours but I can't afford it;physically I don't have the time/patience and financially, well let's just say me and the girls (other salon workers) started to tally up how much you've spent in this store in just the past two months and let's just say most of our car notes are less." Mind you my first instinct was to kick her in the back of the neck but what she said made me think. I spend at least an hour a day reading up on hair care, new products and techniques, and often find myself driving miles to find that 'perfect product.'My hair is getting healthier, but is this healthy to be so 'obsessed' about what grows from our heads...Is all the products we buy really necessary or could we just get buy with basic shampoo/conditoner; no salon or special brands? Back in the day, my grandmother grew hair to her waist with a plain ol lard/sopa mix and vaseline.. are we making this harder than it is???? What do you all think???

Am I obsessed? Yes. Do I spend too much money on hair products? Yes.

Everybody has their "thing"--the lottery, clothes, shoes, make-up, exercise, dogs, jewelry, electronics, dipping into other people's business, etc. Mine is healthy hair and all the products that go along with it.

As long as I can admit my obsession, I am okay....At least I have something to show for it...my hair is on my head and it is getting healthier. I just had this discussion with my cousin the other day. We've discovered that since i have been obsessed with hair I can do some thing just as good or better than my stylist. And now she uses my product recommendations on other clients.

LOL, that's so funny!

Heck, I'll admit it; I'm obsessed. Tell the truth and shame the devil!

She had a lot of nerve. You SHOULD have kicked her in the back of the neck...then again she did compliment your hair.
grin.gif

I have rationalized my obsession to this:

It's my body/my hair and if I don't work on it, who else will?

I have seriously thought about the things you mentioned in your post though. I plan on sharing the obsession equally soon with my body, mind, and finances..........sooner or later.

I am OBSESSED but I do NOT spend a lot of money on my hair. I am one of the few who is not a PJ and proud of it!

Yes, I'm obsessed. I love taking care and doing my hair...it's one of my hobbies or my "thing'. Like someone else said, everyone has their "thing" and this is one of mine
smile.gif

But I do agree, the less products that I use on my hair the better my hair looks.
My cousin HATES taking care and doing her hair and you should see how it looks >>
antlers.gif

She always admires the fact that I have the motivation and energy to put so much time into my hair.

The only way I can see it as being obsessed would be if you are spending bill money or money for the children's activities and food on your hair products. Otherwise, I'd say it's a hobby. It's a hobby for me, I'm not nearly as serious about hair as most of the ladies here but I enjoy reading.

I remember last summer and woman in Chicago (I believe she was in Chicago) left her 2 children in the car in the burning August heat and went into the beauty shop to have her hair done. She was in there 3 hours and when she came out, her children were dead, the died of heat exhaustion. I'd say she was obsessed.

wasn't obsessed, she was demented!!

I totally agree that she was demented. I believe it was due to her obsession with her hair. She was totally preoccupied with having her hair done and didn't think about her children. Obsession: To preoccupy the mind of excessively. Doing this can drive some people insane.

That's sad. She had a bad bad case of the hair thing.

Yep, I remember that story!
frown.gif

Chicky tried to tell a different story, but later admitted the truth. I remember seeing the mug shot/arrest picture of television with her FRESHLY done hair!

Boy, I know she plays that day in her head over and over again!

Was that case necessarily a hair obsession? Perhaps she was just trying to look good for some man or something? Anyway, she had to be crazy for leaving her kids in the car like that.

I totally agree with you all. This is my 'hobby' and it may come off a little obsessive to some but hey, I think I spend alot less than I would going to the salon every week. Thanks for letting me vent guys. I was a bit pissed off (hence me wanting to kick her in the back of the neck; but ya'll have to admit that was kinda funny), but I'm sure I'll feel alot better when I go home and sample all my new products!!

That wouldn't surprise me. If that is obsession, then I'm not obsessed. I'd shave all of my hair off first before allowing harm to come to my children.

Pebbles,

You are SO right. And, with the other comments which Luvable made, I agree with her. I mean everyone has a right to spend their money as they choose, but you are definitely running into trouble when you forego essentials (food, clothing, shelter) for hair products.

On a lighter note, I don't think I am obsessed...maybe Allandra's comment about being "concerned" or the person who noted hair as being a "passion." I don't think about my hair 24/7 and I do very little to it.

What have I been obsessing about lately? Y'all know it...I know you do...CLAIROL!!!!!!!!!!! What has been on my mind has been "I just know they will take Fruit Fusions, all the Herbal Essences blends, and the Renewal 5x products off the shelves. Over the past few months, I've stockpiled enough of that Fruit Fusions Hydrating conditioner to last me at least 3 years.

Prior to growing out my hair and before the period of product hell, there were a host of products by Clairol which I adored and worked extremely well for me. Well, what I found was periodically, they would disappear. Very uncool! Clairol and Revlon have a way of doing that..bring out great products, do market tests, then what happened?

I have to say Clairol has saved me a lot of money, even with the stockpiling. Aubrey I love, but can get expensive. My hair budget has plenty of funds these days. So, I feel more than happy to experiment with a few Clairol and other goodies!

To the person who started this thread: what that chick said to you was just RUDE. None of her business and I am with the person who said that.

Hey OrangeMarmalade!

Personally, I know that i'm making it harder than it is. I've always had bs length (& longer) hair, yet when I got tired of it, I would cut it up to shoulder length. I never gave a who, nor what about how I cared for it, yet it still grew & more importantly, it didn't break!

Now, all of a sudden (Sept '02), I've become "obsessed" with caring for it...(thanks LHCF
laugh.gif
), & have even ordered vitamins, something I've never taken in my life (besides Pre-natals). So in conclusion, I know that I have a problem
laugh.gif
, and frankly, I feel mightly good about it
grin.gif
!!!

But let me add, I'm not a PJ...(maybe a wanna be
wink.gif
), but I'm too "hair cheap" to be amongst them.

I am obsessed and proud. I could be obsessed with something worse like drugs or something but I am not, what harm is their in loving my hair. I see it as an extension of my own self love. It is kind of like working out.

Hey Jade,
wave.gif
(how have you been?)

I completely agree with you. Perhaps I'm just very "concerned" about my hair!
laugh.gif
I can work with that!
grin.gif

I don't even want to think about that lady.......that broke my heart. She wasn't obsessed she was just plain ignorant, careless, and heartless!
mad.gif

I'm sure she regrets her mistake now but I'm sure she has a lot of time to do her hair now----but she won't be getting it done for a long time---that's for sure!

Yes, you are right. Sorry about bringing up that sad story. The word obsessed was strong for me and it made me think of her. I think this is a hobby for the people on this board and those that are saying they are obsessed are probably just joking. In my opinion, being obsessed with something/someone is not fun and leads to trouble no matter what it is.

Hobby: An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.

See, it's a hobby for me.
smile.gif

Sometimes people kill people who they are obsessed with. That word just doesn't set right with me.

You're right LL.

I sure am not obsessed. I am passionate about my hair. I am concerned about my hair. I am dedicated to my hair.

I LOVE my hair.
