An Afro Means "Tangled Hair"

Here's what I really would like to know. Does she have exceptional growth for 4 years or do most naturals with her texture have that much growth in the same time period? This would answer whether or not it's worth the "extra babying" your hair.

There's a difference between speaking properly and overenunciating to the point where your cadence is significantly slowed. But whatever.

I think her cadence is appropriate for the types of videos she makes. Most speakers in instructional/informative videos usually "overenunciate" because they have to make sure to speak properly and most importantly clearly for a wide range of audience.

Although I do believe the vast majority of her audience is black women, I'm sure she has acquired this practice outside of her "youtube life".

Outside of the forum world it is not common because many women still live by the idea that grease/oil equals moisture.

Condition those ends prior to combing and we would see more women with longer hair.

Once I started doing this for my DD as well as making sure her hair is washed every 2 weeks no longer her hair took off.

Its not rocket science many still dont know.

At my DD's dance school the registrar woman was talking about oiling her scalp because it itched to moisturize it. I told her oils dont moisturize, she was like they dont. I said no they lock in the moisture. I gave her a few suggestions and she wrote them down and that was that.

I told her the only oil we should be using on our scalps if need be is jojoba oil or coconut oil.

Its all about re-training

When someone defines a word such as afro they mean everyone that wears an Afro. I saw and heard the entire video. FYI this is not a personal attack on your friend lol.

I don't know Kim, but I have a TWA that tangles like mad and I am supposed to be in the safe category. Unless you experience the tangles and knots, you really can't understand what she means. I know I will never wear an afro when my hair gets longer. I have found some products that help, but I am one of the few on this board that has the tangled fro with short hair. BTW, I'm everyone's friend. LOL.

I'm subbed to her channel and think she has some good advice. But like you i've also heard a twinge of arrogance in her voice on a few videos. Almost as if she's on the defensive. It makes me wonder if she comes on this site and reads the threads dedicated to her? I find it funny that my little two line post upset someone

Understood, when I initially posted it was only as a statement. I actually wore an afro-like style yesterday. So after watching her video my first thought was "my hair doesn't get tangled when I wear a fro". That was one of the reasons for my post. BYTW, when I wear my hair in a fro and am ready to detangle I section into smaller sections and apply V05 Moisture milks. My hair melts and the tangles disappear.

Kimmay is a bit too technical to appeal to me, and I just recently checked her out - actually because I saw all these snide or critical threads on this board about this "Kimmay" and wanted to see what was stimulating the controversy. So I'm not in a position to "go hard" for her. But I still don't understand why people are making all these mean-spirited and critical threads and posts about this woman. Jealousy? Wanting to take down someone that has too much hubris? Just take it or leave it. Swallow the meat and spit out the bones. Is it so hard to treat people the way we'd want to be treated?

I have always wondered how others give people "expert" status too. All of a sudden you'll see "hair guru" or "natural hair guru" near their names, and it makes you wonder how and/or when they became gurus, especially since many of them just give their hair tips (which they've often learned from someone else), or they're seeking advice for themselves.

It's kind of strange. But then "hair gurus" usually have long hair. So even when they aren't saying anything new, people will listen to them because they have successfully grown out their own hair. And sometimes, just putting yourself out there in an authoritative way will get people listening to you if what you say is reasonably coherent. It is what it is.

And honestly I don't see what is so wonderful about her hair. My hair is natural and I do not need to do all the things she does and we still get the same results.

No offense, Lucie, but from what I remember, you had long hair as a relaxed head, and your hair has always grown relatively easily. In contrast, Kimmay's hair was stuck at the same length for a few years, and then she started to apply certain methods and it started to retain length. That will appeal to some people more than someone who has it fairly "easy" right out the gate and don't have to do anything special, because they can relate to the person for whom doing nothing special wasn't enough. I *think* that was how she acquired much of her following because of the fact that they were on the journey with her and saw her asking questions, applying things, and growing.

the same is happening with mine..as it gets longer, it gets easier to detangle. I mean I pretty much hop in in the shower(co-wash detangle) and hop out, more conditoner then oil, barely detangle because it already is ..put it in a bun...and move on unless I am doing twists.

If I may...this might be some of the resistance people are exhibiting around her video "expertise." It's as though there's a way that some have devised that they deem better and true as opposed to others' methods. Thing is, there's truly no right way and no wrong way, there are just more effective ways and they all look extremely different depending upon the individual.

I saw this video the other day! But my thoughts on this video... the afro Kimmay achieved was tangled because she did not let her hair completely dry before taking out those barrettes and she did not comb her hair out. It was like banded hair gone wrong so-to-speak. To me, her hair still looked nice afterwards, a style I would sport. But if an afro is tangled hair, I would consider twistouts and braidouts as tangled hair too, especially if you do not let your dry completely before unravelling the twists or braids.

Wearing braidouts minimizes tangles for me, though. Wash 'n gos may look nice, but after a while the tangling and knotting isn't really worth it.

I do this too. sometimes it gets rid of some that I would have had to cut. Normally not ssks though but with small knots that cannot be undone with a comb. She did not come up with this method, its been around for a while.

I see the truth in what she is saying. When I wear my hair in an afro I get insane tangles. So, I stretch it. I'm not sure what all the controversy is about. It seems nitpicky.

To answer the question without viewing the video, yes an afro equals tangled hair for me. not necessarily a bad thing I just can't wear afros. it just equals a lot of single strand knots and dry split ends.

Nonie, they are both afros. However, I think Kimmaytube's point was that for her, a shrunken afro leads to really tangled hair and she has to keep her hair stretched to keep it untangled. She can wear a stretched out "afro" and experience less tangles but the shrunken afro leads to tangles for her.

I know she defined afros as tangled hair, but I hope we all know that twist outs, braid outs etc are all variations of the "afro."

I wondered this too, because when I blow out my hair it is in an afro, but it is not tangled. I dunno, we could sit here all day and talk about it I suppose. I just think some people take this hair deal a little too seriously.

BraunSugar ms-gg, thanks for responding. I got Kimmay's point but I just wondered if those who kept distinguishing stretched hair with afros didn't realize that an afro could be stretched out too. I suppose when you have waist length hair, it'd just flop when stretched out so not form a perfect microphone afro...so that's probably where Kimmay makes the distinction. I just was confused about those with hair that isn't WL or MBL who seemed to think afro only = shrunken hair. Coz SL hair when stretched out can form a nice round afro that doesn't isn't tangle prone like shrunken hair.
