An Afro Means "Tangled Hair"

I get what she's saying.:look: She sounds more technical than me though. To me Afro = strands having relations with each other:lol:

We're starting this Sunday right, aren't we?

Honestly though.... I'm not sure whether I agree but I'm not sure whether I disagree either. I feel like Kimmay presents herself as an expert but I'm not sure whether she has experience beyond dealing with her own hair. She is good at self-promotion though. For some people an afro is an amazing low manipulation style that keeps your hair off of clothes and damaging scrunchies, clips, etc. Each to his own.

The bolded represents my issue with her perspective on this topic.

On one hand, I understand where she's coming from because when the hair is worn in an Afro, the strands are closely intertwined. That element, coupled with the free-form state of an Afro, certainly offers an invitation to tangles.

On the other hand, I think about people like Nonie who wear puffs but aren't plagued with tangles.

As with every other aspect of haircare (and life in general), it certainly isn't a one-size-fits-all kind of issue.

this is true for me. it doesnt add that im not a fan of the afro look on myself.

I have been wearing my hair in its shrunken state a lot recently and I don't really have any problems with detangling. I used to before I started oil rinsing once a week. When you hair is properly moisturized and well lubricated tangles aren't much of an issue. But I can only speak from my own experiences.

4 hours to detangle ONLY as she does it dry......perhaps you need to look into why it takes you less time:yep:jk
i just think it's excessive :look:. It has never taken me that long and we have a similar hair type and length. i would be bald detangling dry

i agree i thought people misquoted on the 4 hours to detangle only till i saw the vid :ohwell:
dry detangling is something i will NEVER try

Seriously my daugther the same hair type as Kimmay and It aint no way I would take 4-5 hours to detangle. That is just ridamdiculous.

Why go through all of that. Slap some condish on there, section and put up, let it sit, wash and detangle wet and leave it stretched so it does not tangle again. BAMMMMM!!! dam near tangle free hair. She is real extra with this one.

Even when my DD has worn a pony puff all week it still takes me no time because I make my DD put her hair in 2 low braids at night to keep the hair stretched hence no real long detangling sessions needed.

I did not even watch this video as I feel she is running out of ideas. I mean really!!!

it WAS factual information, but now I see what people mean about the attitude. it does kinda come off as snarky. Jc of the natural haven put up the same information about afros and tangles awhile back, and it was not half as snarky.

nice hair.

Once you get to a certain length, you have to be detangle. Hell, type 1 peeps have to detangle shed hair too. One friend of mine told me about how she was a kid that she didn't brush her hair for like a month or something and had to cut it off since it was all knotted up (she's type 1, type 2). It happens.

I just think that creating a video about it isn't that necessary. I feel like it's common sense, no shade. And if not common sense, experience will let you know in a minute.

Some folks can work a fro without tangles, some people will still tangle without even trying to work a fro.

I agree with her.
A natural afro on 4ish hair, without streching (braiding, banding, blowdrying or twisting) or product, is pretty much every strand doing its own thing. Which means they are entangled or "tangled".

Also, at a certain length you will get tangles no matter what. I don't like tangles so I will do everything to get as little as possible. Which means I will not wear a fully shrunken afro.

Comment from DH @ 1:35: "People actually listen to that voice for the entire video??"

My thoughts exactly. Tis all.

Funny you should mention that, 'cause I remember Nonie saying that she retains less length because she wears puffs and doesn't do protective styles 90% of the time like Kimmay. :look:

Though there certainly isn't a "one-size-fits-all" kind of thing with hair, but I think a good portion of naturals would end up retaining less length if their hair was constantly in an afro state. I know SSKs were all over my head after one day of wearing my hair in an afro, despite it being moisturized. :nono:
I know many women who go natural just out of desperation or frustration with relaxers and only know that one hairstyle. So I can imagine people being all surprised when they realize just how versatile natural hair can be. :yep:

Fo real

Back when I did not know any better I was combing my dd's hair once it became dry while braiding it. I kept wondering why her hair was not growing and had soooooo many broken pieces.

AmyRose92 Correction, I have never said I retain less because of afros. I don't wear my hair out enough to be able to even assess what effect afros have on my hair, but I'll tell you, I am yet to spend time detangling because of an afro. The last time I wore an afro I was at SL and I never had problem with tangles from that. What thwarts my retention is not afros but my not PSing and not sealing ends and perhaps leaving my hair bare w/o some sort of balm to protect it. I think PSing is the main thing missing coz my hair grows nicely up till SL even without the moisturizer or seal, then it's a crawl thanks to friction with clothes, methinks. Otherwise I love afro puffs. I never ever wear an uncombed afro though. And I will braid my hair at the end of the day before bed and baggy.

This is an afro puff done on damp hair with S Curl on it. It's the most shrunken afro I wore on my SL hair:

This is an afro puff done on hair that had been S Curled again after it had dried fully and baggied for the night. It's still a shrunken afro puff but not as compact as the one above and it was the biggest my puff would get if I used S Curl:

Another afro puff done on shrunken S Curled hair:

And below this is an afro puff Kimmay might approve of because it is done on hair that is stretched out. I didn't use S Curl this time but used coconut oil and conditioner. Ironically this was the most unnerving afro to comb...because it felt dry-ish. S Curl makes my hair feel like it has conditioner in it, as the slip makes a comb glide though it easily.

Even though my coils do sort of cuddle while in the puff, I am yet to have issues with tangles. Maybe when my hair is as long as Kimmay's I'll have a different story. I'll be sure to let you all know. What I do at the end of the day is use my fingers to pull out a braid section. If I stretch out the strands as I separate them, I am able to pull out a section easily. My hair usually feels moist with S Curl unless it's on wash day when it would have dried up hard. I would then just make it moist with S Curl and it'd feel the way it does with conditioner, and then it'd comb as easily as seen in this vid where I had conditioner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCcoXph8tF4 (Notice how I stretch out the coils to create a straight path for my comb to go through.)

While I do wear a shrunken puff, it's not deliberate--although I do have to say that I appreciate shrinkage coz it keeps the product laden hair off my body. I just happen to love S Curl and nothing else, and it does cause shrinkage. I do braid my hair every night and I do comb my hair every morning, because I am anal about keeping tangles at bay. The braiding is so as to stretch my hair, and while the S Curl does seem to cancel out the effect of the stretch, that my hair was braided means strands didn't get a chance to knot up, so my comb goes through it with ease. I never run my comb through a lot of hair at once. It's always just a small section at a time.

Natural hair just isnt this "technical" or "complicated". What was going with those huge 70's afros, wire pics and grease for "moisture". You should hear my parents hair care regimen back then....lol! In two years their fros were huge!
AliciaJamesMusic is one of my fave youtubers. She is also a talented singer/songwriter. Her hair is awesome! WASH AND GO and SHRUNKEN FRO was her everyday style as she grew her hair. Funny thing is she credits Kimmay for helping her get to where she is now. She even sort of looks like Kimmay...lol.

I must admit, there are days when it can take me anywhere from 4+ hours to detangle, but I credit that to the fact that I have really thick hair and a big arsh Gina apple head.

I don't believe that all afros are tangled hair. I can wear my hair in stretched out fros and as long as I braid or twist it up at night then I'm good. Now, shrunken fros, heyall yes those lead to tangled hair (for me). But shrunken twists do the same thing for me too or for that matter any shrunken style. That is why I protective style and also keep my hair stretched out all the time (when I wash, after I wash etc etc). Everyone has to find that right balance for their hair and lifestyle. There is no one size fits all for natural hair.
