All Long Hair

I was in the ATL this weekend at the FAMU vs. TSU game (GO FAMU!!!!!) and noticed just about every woman I saw had naturally long (BSL or longer) hair!!! I mean it is like a major movement or something! Everyone looked good and young with beautifully healthy, long, thick hair!

I am on a quest to grow my hair out (seriously) and want to know what is everyone doing to achieve that? From the airport to the stadium to the clubs (Visions and Shout) long hair abounded. Now most of it was straightened and I have no plans to permanently straighten my hair but am interested in stretched BSL or longer.

R u a newbie? welcome
Finding products that work for you, vitmins and a haircare regime, and patience tha's a big one.
Some people oil, MTG, Conditioner rinse etc... do seardhes and you'll find more than enough to start.

Hey there- I am fairly new to this site since I recently decided to focus on growing out my natural locks. The funny thing is I have been getting regular trims which has taken away some of the potential length I would have had so pulling my hair back in a bun has and is a challenge for me right now. On top of it, my hair tends to like to be FREE and not tied down.

Are you getting a proff ot trimm because they dut they don't trimm. Now you ouldtry just dusting trimms yourself. Just trimming the least amount to get some of the splits if you need, that way you retain length. hth

i swear, this long hair thing really is a movement... i've been seeing such nice, healthy hair lately, of all lengths... especially long... it's insane!! makes me wanna do all can (as long as it's sane of course  ) to get myself there!

but yeah, patience is key, and MOISTURE is the top one too... if u don't have moisture, no matter what u do, ur hair's not gonna get anywhere

I am getting my hair professionally trimmed every 3 to 4 months or so. She normally takes off about 1/4 of an inch which is moreso than dusting.

I did notice one young lady had a very pretty weave but when I looked at the other lady's hair it was all theirs.

This is very typical at this game b/c you got the sistas from the AUC and other Atlanta institutions as well as those from FAM and TSU. I know when I use to go BSL or longer was a common siting as well, and a large majority of these women were probably pressed, and not necessarily permanently straightened with a relaxer. So it is very lovely to see either way.

Why do the women from AUC and other Atlanta institutions have longer hair than the typical? Do they just know how to take care of their hair? Or, are they not 4a/4bs?

No, I would just say that being a former student in the AUC, the vast majority of women had some where between shoulder length to BSL and longer hair. The majority I met that were BSL or longer (and they were quite a few) had a variety of different hair types, and most of them were virgin naturals and just kept their hair pressed. A lot of relaxed sistas I met with BSL and longer ended up transitioning and pressing as well, which I found quite interesting (I should have been paying more attention, cause most did so, w/o trimming a lot).

It does seem interesting the CurleeDST saw so MANY during her entire trip to Atlanta. It would make sense that longer hair (and old school protective styling) could be rooted more firmly in southern states. Do you think longer BLACK hair is a SOUTHERN thing?

:) If so, it is quickly spreading thanks to LHCF!

It seems as if it may be a Southern thing. I live "up North" and there too many pitiful broken off heads of hair. :ohwell:

LOL... maybe the busted, jacked up hair is a CT thing... LOL

AUC student here!!! Personally I have mid-armpit length hair, and here at Spelman that is pretty short there are NUMEROUS girls with BS and further here. I think its a combination of the southern thing and also a social class thing. You guys should keep in mind that most AUC students come from a middle class background and growing up could afford to go to the salon, weren't allowed if at all to get perms until they were a certain age, and dyed fried and laid to the side is more of a lower class thing (ladies my analysis of class and the aesthetics and trends of them is not coming from a snobbish place, it is of particular interest to me and i've taken numerous classes on it).

You know that is what I heard that they are typically PRESSED and not permanentely relaxed!! See now that is what I am talking about! But with all of that heat, how does your hair manage? My girlfriend who relocated down to Atlanta and does hair (Yante Coi) told me they rarely apply color so their hair is dark, thick, shiny, healthy, long and straightened eventhough it is natural.

I wonder how they can do it with all of that humidity in Atlanta - I swear the air felt WET! Just humid.

All of their hair was gorgeous though.

Also I used to live in Atlanta from 1987 to 1996 and also lived in Tallahassee, FL while attending FAMU from 88 to 93 and boy oh boy..maybe it was due to what was in style then, but I have NEVER seen this many long haired black women in Atlanta. Seems to definitely be a recent trend w/ the renewed press-n-curl b/c you can get a better fuller more healthier straight look with natural hair than chemically relaxed hair.

That's funny- where I am now (Caribbean country) on a university campus, I was shocked at how many 'sisters' have long hair here (armpit to near-waist)- to the point that it's actually the norm! You can't help but notice it.
There are some I can't tell because they're always in braids (mostly the Africans- Nigerians for example) but the others, from all over America, all over the West Indies/Caribbean, about all of them have long hair. They're mostly relaxed though.

It made me wonder myself if the winds were changing...

I think thats true bout the pressed thing, one of the ladies with the longest hair [I've ever seen on this site] is pressed (Unlvgirl) sorry to mention your name... :) but I think that has something to do with it.

Also, remember Tweet the songstress? I remember reading an interview where she said her hair is all natural, she just presses it for the straight look.

With all of that blowdrying do DOM salons really help retain length for longer healthy hair? I found AAs can't do blowouts as good.

Could some of these be really good WEAVE? I think to could be easier to blend in a weave when your hair is fuller, and not bone straight.

But I LOVE the idea that Black women are learning how to take better care of their hair and retaining great length. ;)

I asked my girl and it is her hair. Her immediate response when I asked is "YES" this is my hair. I figure she gets that question alot.

I know it's not sposed to be funny, but the way you worded that is hilarious.

Is it a Southern thing? Well it could very well possibly be, well at least in dealing with a lot of members in my family in VA. My aunt (who is somewhere between BS and WS) has never had a perm though now that she is over I do thinks she overdoes it with dyes, but her hair has always been natural and she keeps it pressed. All of DH's aunties are essentially the same way, except they don't dye as much and their hair and theirs is a little longer.

I think when you grow up in a certain environment, your hair becomes accustomed to it. A lot of natural pressed ladies I knew were from deep areas of the South like Vicksburg, Auburn, etc., so their hair was probably used to being in extreme heat and the fact that they kept it pressed are probably both factors as to why their hair seems to deal with humidity better.

Yes. They only blowdry your roots. Your ends, the oldest and most delicate part of your hair is never touched by heat.

With that how do they get your hair tips so frizz free? I know when I attempt to blow out my own hair my ends are ALWAYS frizzy but DOMS can get those ends SLICK as I do not know what and very impervious to moisture in the air from precipitation.

They wash, condition and rollerset your hair on magnetic rollers, then put you under the dryer to set your curls. When your hair is dry, they blow your roots (new growth) straight. The rollers make your ends straight.
