2023 - SL/APL Challenge

have my loc consultation in a few days...hopefully i'll be able to get my starter locs done soon. Will wash/DC/ blow dry before my appointment friday
morning. Starter locs w/ coils cost $95 but I have SL thick 4c hair so price may increase for me.

also successfully completed january no-buy which wasn't hard. I realized I buy too much stuff. I saved over $700

Will return back tomorrow to read the loc thread and update yall on starting my february no-buy.

Saving $700 is amazing!!! Hopefully the price of your starter locs doesn't change too much!

@CoiledOrchids congrats on going back to school! I don't care what nobody say, getting that "piece of paper" has served me well in my career and income. Don't sleep on professional certifications either. My company pays and I get the cert! I've been looking at possibly going to grad school this fall. To be continued...

My hair is doing well. I'm settling back into my normal hair routine and can't wait to see the results with my next relaxer.

I've also been thinking about getting back into doing ponytail rollersets. This method helped keep my newgrowrh stretched and tangle-free as I get deep into my relaxer stretch.

thank you @sunnieb and @ckisland! I actually already have both an associates and a bachelors degree. I'm going back for an accelerated BSN and i've really wanted to work in psych. I do eventually want to be a psych NP and maybe tack on a healthcare informatics cert. Definitely want to be a travel NP as well. I've realized I just tolerate my current job and i feel very bored and unfulfilled right now.

I want to be able to save more, travel and buy my first house

Congrats on going back, especially for that specialty. My facility is currently experiencing an existential crisis of psych APNs and we are not even the only one in our region. So traveling will be in the cards. And since telehealth is booming, once you buy your house, you'll be able to work from home if you get travel weary.

Due to sheer laziness, I only washed my hair 3-4 times in January and my hair properly thanked me by completely drying out. When I finally did get around to it last week, the breakage and hair fall was crazy. I will never do this again.

Back in some mini braids under a wig for now. I can still wash and moisturize and have been doing so every 3-4 days.

I finally got around to my hair. It was looking crazy.

I shampooed once with K18 shampoo and then I DCd. I didn't even think to do it with heat  I was just glad to have gotten it done. After dinner, I shampooed again with Madison Reed. I applied the K18 leave-in and let it sit for the 4 minutes. Then I applied my leave-in and put it in big flat twists.

I will put in 2 flat twist tomorrow to wear for the week.

My color is on the way so I will probably color my hair next weekend.

loc consult update: @faithVA
I went this morning. She said my hair was nice, thick and healthy. She recommended i start with coils but once she said they could unravel, I asked if I could just do two strand twists instead, just to be on the safe side. She said it didn't really matter how you start locs but I knew i wouldn't be comfortable going to work everyday with those coils. It will make me feel more comfortable to just start with twists so that's what i'm gonna do. Other than that, it'll only cost me $95 for the starters. I booked my starter loc appointment for feb 15th so i'm all set to go!

It is just around the corner. Looking forward to seeing your beautiful locs.

I want to color this weekend, so tonight I may shampoo once and then apply the K18. That will give me at least 4 treatments before I color. And then I will just finish up my remaining two in February sometime. Need to put my hair into some type of style to stretch it to make it easier to color.

Anything I do tonight will work since I need some moisture in my hair.

I am going to re join this challenge. At first i was going to the gusto and trying to reach WL but I noticed I had alot of breakage in the front of my hair due to all them slick backs. So now my goal is full APL by the end of the year. I think i will cut it all to APL so i can have even hair by the end of the year and then I will shoot for WL in 2024

Glad to have you back but sorry it is due to breakage. But glad you have a game plan. WL here she comes. :yep:

Shampooed my hair before work. It needed some water. I just shampooed once and then applied the K18. I wanted to get another dose of K18 on my hair before my color.

Maybe before I start wearing wash and goes again, I may start refreshing my hair every 3 days to get it to accept water more readily.

I haven't had much time for my hair since last summer. And considering the neglect she is doing pretty well. She is retaining some and she is easier to style.

I just put her up into 5 flat twists on each side and she is coming along.

Here is my February update. I didn’t take my hair as much as usual when I styled it yesterday so it looks really uneven.
I’m still a long way from a SL wash n go, but since my ends are healthy I feel like maybe I can get there this year.

It definitely looks longer. On the left, the hair is closer to the bottom of your ear and you can't really see the back at all. On the right, I can clearly see the back of your hair and your hair is closer to chin level. It may be the difference in product. The UFD/JS seems to give you more hang time.

Wanted to do another K18 treatment before my appointment tomorrow, so I used a sample of the Hair Rules No Suds shampoo that I had. I really like the product but not sure I want to pay $50 bucks for it. I will see if I can find something similar at Ulta the next time I go. It is much lighter than Innersense and I could detangle with it and didn't need a conditioner afterwards.

After the K18 I put in TGIN leave-in and then just put it in a few twists. I will figure out what to do with it tomorrow.

I have been doing next to nothing with my hair but I am much better about keeping it moisturized. Currently debating on if I want to do some braid extensions. Leaning towards no because I don't want to spend a weekend doing it myself or spend money to go get it done.

I was supposed to do a curly set but at 3 pm, I realized it wasn't going to happen. I did shampoo, condition and then decided I need to use up some old gels, so I'm back to my flat twist up into a little bun. I haven't been able to wear my hair like this since March 2020. Probably going to go back to flat twists as my go to style until my hair grows out some more. And I will try to do a curly set once a month to see if I can get better at them.
