2018 Hair Regimen Development: Design, Rationale, Revision, Reflection

My hair felt very producty this morning as I took down my twists. Like heavy and tacky with grease. I didn’t like it. I just sprayed a lot of water on it and then smoothed it in and it’s better now. Tonight when I M&S, I might just spray with more water and retwist and that’s it.

Managed to twist up my hair before I got too tired. I sprayed water, brushed, and then retwisted. Did more twists than usual because I felt like there was a lot of product that would be reactivated and subsequently, would need to be dried. I could see the product just sitting on my hair before I sprayed. Hopefully it all absorbs overnight. If it doesn’t I’ll cowash tomorrow.

Also, my twists are starting to look very smooth.

Cowashed my hair. Realized that the Butter Than This directs to use on damp or dry hair. I applied it on wet hair. That could have been my mistake. I applied my Leave-in and am gonna let it dry some and then apply the BTT a little bit later.

Have been implementing the vertical direction method while brushing my hair. It seems to make my hair smoother? Or maybe I’m imagining things.

I just washed my hair with 22nd Century Shampoo Bar, and now I'm deep conditioning with The Mane Choice Green Tea and Carrot whatever whatever mask.

One of my coils broke off in my hand.

:cry3:

I've been faithfully DCing with balancing DCs, but I guess it's time for a hard protein treatment???

Next wash day, Komaza Protein Hair Strengthener it is.

Working on my henna and color regimen. It is coming along. Today is henna/color day. I shampooed with a sulfate shampoo. I then DCd with a moisturizing DC, the new Mane Choice Type 4 deep conditioner. I rinsed out the DC and shampooed with the Mane Choice Type 4 shampoo. I should have oiled my ends before shampooing again but I didn't. But it is on my list for next time. I towel dried and applied the henna. I made it too runny but :ohwell: I let the henna sit for 1 hour. I'm just trying to get enough of a coating for my color on Sunday. I will rinse the henna with warm water. I will spritz my hair heavily with my diluted leave-in and let it air dry. When my hair is damp, I will oil my ends. Unfortunately I will probably be sleep before my hair is damp. So tonight I will apply the oil before I put my hair into bantu knots.

When my hair is close to dry I will spritz it with a glycerin based spray, apply a moisturizer and seal with a butter.

You will be OK  I have 500 coils break off in my hands every day. That coil will grow back before you know it.

I did something slightly different with sealing. Instead of applying sealant twist by twist (which would give me peace of mind in knowing all of my hair was sealed), I sealed in two large sections: right and left. My hair does feel soft so I guess it’s okay. Idk if this is gonna be a constant tho; I only did it this way because I had to be somewhere soon.

Another thing I noticed today, my hair doesn’t look as dry and crispy anymore. My coarse strands seem to amplify the appearance of dehydration of my hair, and yeah it never looks good. That’s starting to go away.

I know I still have a ways to go with having more moisturized hair, but there’s definitely discernible changes already.

Cumulative effects. :yep: Nice.

I had the best WNG ever yesterday. I’ve given up on more than one-day hair. I think it’s just too short to get flattened at night and bounce back in the morning. That said, I have been clay washing exclusively for 2018 and cowashing in between. Yesterday, I did water only and then reapplied some product and that seemed to make all the difference. It took less time, less water and my hair was soft and defined. I’ll still clay wash weekly to cleanse but in between, water only.

:yay:

:woot:

I've been focusing on other areas of my life recently but I've been making sure to continue with my regimen during that time. One thing I've noticed, hyaluronic acid does more for my hair between the leave in conditioner and sealing with oil rather than putting it before the leave in conditioner.

I'm considering adding in a midweek wash but I'm not quite sure if I'm going to make the time to do it...

What does hyaluronic acid do for your hair? Do you apply it to your scalp also?

TIA!

Okay. Yesterday I did a lot to my hair. I’ll try to be concise.

Detangled: In shower. Used Wet Brush. Instead of wetting hair first, I Wet the brush and brushed in sections. Then rinsed with water. Brushed more with hair under the water.

Washed: with the SM Argan Oil and Almond Milk Shampoo. Light finger and brush detangle.

Conditioned: Everyday Nourish Conditioner. Rinsed. Brush detangled.

DC/M&S: First, I sprayed my hair with Honest Kids Detangler (not sure that’s the right name). Then, I applied my DC (a mix of SM Rehydration treatment and No Tangles conditioner). Then, sprayed some more Detangler. Then applied Shea butter. Twisted up and covered with plastic cap.

At night, I sprayed each twist with water and retwist before putting back on cap and bonnet.

This morning, I t-shirt blotted to remove excess product.

My hair is soft and laying flatter.

I think I need to find a jelly-like moisturizer. Too many creamy buttery products in my hair will never absorb and just leave white stuff in my hair.

An entire curl broke on last wash day. So I'm going to do a Komaza Protein Hair Strengthener treatment.

I found a sample pack of the SM Argan Oil and Almond Milk masque at Target. To be honest, I don't have high hopes for lasting moisture, but if this DC reduces frizz, I will be overjoyed.

After that, I was going to FINALLY try Chicoro's Scurl + Shea butter method, but DH's best friend is in town and has invited us to dinner. It's thus not the day for experimenting. :look:

So, CurlyProverbz DIY Ayurvedic Hair Tea under The Mane Choice Tropical Moringa Pearly Braid Out Glaze it is!

First, I'll detangle with 22nd Century Natural Shampoo Bar and deep cleanse in prep for the Komaza Protein.

I've got 3.5 hours before we leave for dinner.

I tried whipping up some Shea butter the other day. Used coconut oil in the mix and had to use a whisk and mix by hand because I don’t have a mixer. It was creamy and then hardened. I don’t know if I’m supposed to do something with it before I try to apply it to my hair because right now it’s not that much easier to apply to my hair than unwhipped SB.

Hmm.

I'm not sure. But if you visit that Shea Regimen thread that's popping, it has GREAT, very detailed posts about exactly how to get various textures for your DIY whipped Shea butter.

I've only tried it once and mine was too oily (not enough Shea butter). Right now I'm using a product that smells and performs DIVINELY on my hair--Jakeala's Shea Amla Hair Parfait in the peach scent. It takes like a month for it to arrive and it's not cheap, but I can't IMAGINE being able to make anything as good or better. Maybe with practice. For now, it's Jakeala. I purchase it from her shop at Etsy.com.

Soon, though, I will be trialing the Alikay Naturals Hair Parfait if I open a jar and it looks and smells right. It may be an alternative option for me. The reviews are amazing. I've only tried one other Alikay Naturals product, and it was a no go for my hair. I'm very curious now, though, abou their Honey and Sage DC and this Hair Parfait.

I’ve tried the Honey Sage D/C and it was extremely thick and left a coating on my hair. No moisture whatsoever. Hated it. Are you avoiding cones? TGIN Honey Miracle Mask is good for moisture but it does have dimethicone.

:cry4: Thanks for saving me.

Yes, I'm avoiding cones: My shampoo bar doesn't remove them.

That conditioner turned me off from trying anything else from that line . How did your protein treatment turn out?

The aloe berry or whatever gel from that line turned me off from trying anything else from the line. :lachen:

I ran out of time. (DH sprang a dinner on me at the last second. His close friend came into town, so we met up.) So, I had to skip the protein treatment. Will try again for it either today or Friday or something.

Perfect question! That's what I'm asking myself. I don't know.

I am currently doing a protein treatment. After I DC, I think I will try the following:
  1. Scurl
  2. Shea butter
  3. Install 12 twists
  4. Let fully dry
  5. Untwist, apply Bronner Brothers gel, retwist
  6. Wear twist out
So you are using the Scurl and shea butter as leave-ins for a twist out?
From knowing both glycerin and shea butter, they should mix clear with a gel.. But why do you apply gel to fully dry hair? Won't that prevent your twist out from being well defined?

ETA: sorry I forgot that your hair responds better to styling on blow-dried/stretched hair..

ETA again: I remember now. It's the flat twists that are technically difficult to do on damp hair. Lol sorry I have the worst memory

No, you're right.

The only reason: My last Shea butter plus BB gel experience was .
