Heyy ladies!
So I'm curious (as always lol). How do you ladies feel about time lengths? I see so many ladies on this board who have declared the amt of inches they want to gain by a certain month/year etc. At first I felt like time constraints would only be discouraging because if I didn't gain those desired inches by that time I know I'd be upset. NOW I sort of feel like maybe I should place some emphasis on time??? I feel like maybe if I DID then I'd have something to look forward to? Currently it feels like I am just waiting to get to BSL and lord knows how long that's going to take. :look: How do you guys feel about it? :perplexed

PS. I would've posted a poll if I knew how!!

I like to set realistic goals for myself and my hair. I am shooting for Full APL by Dec. 31st 2009, and Full BSL by August 31st 2010. These goals coincide with my stretching, so it gives me something to look forward to each relaxer. I don't really get disappointed if I don't reach my goal, I know by the next strecth, I'll be there. :yep:

I like this a lot! I haven't thought of timing my inches to my stretches. Smart! :yep:. I think if I do set any time frames, I definitely give this a try. I just have to go and purchase some measuring tape now lol!

i don't really know how to feel about them. i signed up to be a part of the APL by dember 2009 challenge, but i think that was a bit ambitious, because my goals were two-fold: repair and strengthen my hair for health AND gain length. but i found that part of getting my hair healthier, meant trimming off the fully relaxed ends little by little, so every relaxer, i was cutting off what i gained. and now the time it'll take make APL seems a bit out of reach.

i haven't quit the challenge though. i feel like i committed to it, but i don't have really high expectations.

Not only do I love time estimations, I need them. Right now I have a goal of BSL by December. When I don't want to apply my Boundless Tresses/do DC's/take my vits or when I want to over-manipulate my hair.........I remind myself BSL in December, BSL in December.

And even if I were to not make it, I'd still know that I didn't succumb to laziness and took better care of my hair because I had that deadline looming over my shoulder - somewhat similar to when people say they work well under a bit of pressure.

For me it's just the projected time I think it should take.

5 inches in 1 year is pretty reasonable :yep:

So I may get there late or maybe even sooner... but I would think that without setbacks, I will at least be close to where I want to be.

It gives me motivation... when I think of being lazy, I remember my goals.

When I first started here, I told myself that I wasn't going to give myself hair deadlines...but they actually work for me. Setting a goal for myself keeps me motivated and doing what I need to in order to reach my goal. I just keep in mind that while I may not make every goal, soon enough I will be where I want to be with my hair.

I think setting goals is important in all areas of my life. They just need to be realistic. For example, I wouldn't make my goal 8 inches in one year because that's just not going to happen.

But I do have length goals. My main one being full APL. I need at least another year to do that, so my goal is for December 2010. That's more than realistic because I only need like 6inches to get there.

I guees is just a way to keep fighting to reach your goals, i don't think is wrong to have realistics goals to achieve, it push you up. I don't do them myself, for me is kind of bored cause sometimes i'm very into make my hair grow faster or loose some weight faster than normal, but then i just got tired of ding sooo much and be worry and thinking what if i don't reach them?

so, i just let myhair grow as it wants to, no pressure no time limit. I enjoy any lenght i can achieve, in the time my hair decides to do it.

When first starting my hair challenge I NEVER made any timed goals for my hair, I simply let it do its thing. I think once I made bra-strap length and finally knew how long it would take my hair to get to a certain length is when I started to make timed goals. I was never disappointed if I didnt make a certain time frame, I just simply extended it.

Thanks ladies for such wonderful input! keep em' coming :spinning:. You guys have such good tactics. I'm using this as inspiration for my own plans!

Timed goals for me are very motivational and keep me on track. As of now I am hoping to be BSL in december of this year.:drunk:

Last time I straightned my hair was in Mar of this year and I was at 19 inches. I just need 25 inches to be Bsl . So, If I met my goal great!!If not then I know I am not far away from it. :yep:

Wow that's pretty awesome! I have about...12 more inches to go until I get there LOL! That's why I was like ehhh, time constraints are probably only going to get me down. I have a feeling that I may not make the 6in mark thing with RETENTION. Right now, I'm worried about breakage. :nono:

If the goal is realistic, it's fine (imo). I don't think people have a "time-limit" per se though. Rather I see them as targets that help some people stay focused, which is key when you're growing your hair out.

When I first hit the "hair milestones" SL (and anything below it) and APL, I didn't even know it until months later lol. Now I'm getting a bit more serious about growing my hair out to long lengths, I've stopped cutting and have written how many inches I think I'll need to gain (in order to be BSL, MBL etc) by X time. Anyway, it just makes things seem more real to me and I realise I don't actually have that far to go.

Hi Babygurl! Thanks for dropping in.

Yep I have a time limit I think it is very realistic.

Waist length stretched December 20__? :spinning:

I use to have all kinds of limits and I started getting discouraged, so now I just go with the flow even though I secretly wish for certain dates. But I have hair that grows when it wants to and I am doing my best to deal with that phenomena. :ohwell:

ITA in keeping your goal dates very realistic.

When I started Feb 2009, I set a Solid 2 year Time Line to Totally:

a) Overcome my Setback
b) Get My Hair Healthy and On Track
c) and Gain Total Mastery of Being a Do It Yourself-er.:yep:

I personally like the time goals because they help me stay focused and dedicated to my regimen. I didn't reach all of my original goals by my 1 year anniversary, but one month later, I reached one of my goals. This goes to show that if you don't meet your time goal, don't be discouraged because your goal may be right around the corner.

But overall, if a person finds it more frustrating than helpful, I wouldn't do it. I would just go with the flow.

However, the one thing I think EVERYONE should do is take photos of their progress. This can be a very motivating practice, with or without goal timelines.

I like time limits for the most part. But you do have to be very realistic or it gets depressing when you never reach your goals on time. And also, it's good to have the attitude that regardless of whether you meet your goals or not you'll just keep going. But I do find it pretty fun and inspiring thinking of what length I'll be next year at this time.

I think setting time lines for growth is great if used realistically. It gives you motivation and pushes you to keep up w/ your reggie. I don't beat myself up if I don't reach it by the exact dates bc usually I'm pretty close.

I want to reach my ultimate hair goal (classic length) by age 30. I hope to be WL by my graduation next Spring. I don't think either are too unrealistic. I'm about bsl/mbl right now.
I've never taken a measuring tape to my head or calculated how many inches I need to reach a certain length. I know it just takes sound practices and time to reach goals.
The only thing I have to keep in mind is that I'm much taller than most of my hair inspirations, so our timelines will be different.

I know exactly what you mean. For me, I feel as though I'd love to be BSL by the time I graduate from college. I wanted to be able to wear my hair down and lusciously long without the use of a weave or anything else. Yay for similar goals! haha .
