My hair has never been long..and I really don't think it will ever be long. I look at some of these pictures and it makes me sad. I know most of yall worked hard to get your hair to this point..but I don't think this is my destiny. I'm just going to work on keeping my hair healthy..and forget about having hair down my back.

I see you joined just a couple of months ago. That's not really enough time to see a huge change in length. Growing hair takes patience because you really can't rush the process.

I say stick with it for at least a year, focus on keeping your hair healthy, and do all you can to retain your length. If you give up now, you'll get what you've always got, which is short hair.

Don't be discouraged. If you haven't already, take pictures of your hair from different angles and compare every 3-4 months. No matter what your regimen, take good care of your ends and you will see progress!

Also, there is no need to buy a ton of products or anything; only a good moisturizing shampoo (if you choose to shampoo) & deep conditioner, a heat protectant if you use heat, and a daily moisturizer like Elasta QP Mango Butter. Plenty of ladies here started with short hair, even TWAs and bald heads and had NEVER had long hair, ever before LHCF and now have very long hair! You can do it, just stick with it and find what works for you.

ETA: Some ladies who have had long hair all of their lives have many good tips to share, of things that worked for them over the years. They also tend to have simple regimens, so you can learn a lot from them as well.

Not all of your goals have to be length goals. It's okay to just work on moisturized hair first, or healthy ends, or learn how to do no-heat styles, or whatever your personal goals may be, then move on to length! Good luck!

GIRL I feel your pain! But 1st comes health and then comes length,so I'm sure you will get to the length you want, it just takes time.... now if in 4 years ur not where u wanna be then.... idk, but don't give up hope!

I do too. I stopped coming to this section for that reason. I was getting too anxious about my growth looking at some of these photos and siggys. I have to come in this section in short bursts.:ohwell:

Dont be discouraged...there is plenty to learn here. After learning quite a bit here I managed to get my hair to APL but then after the excitement of it I managed to over do it with the straigthening I am now nursing it back to health. If only I had a picture of my hair before LHCF you would believe me when I say if I can grow hair from what it was to the lenght in my siggy then anybody else can. Try not to follow what each person is doing instead learn to know your hair what it likes and what it doesnt. By this I mean if it hates protein then limit it to just enough to strengthen the hair, if its dry; then this will lead to break then no retention of length so you need to up the moisture treatments. PLUS the all important one of babying your ends till you go past the shoulders. Dont be discouraged. You will get there!

OP, I used to feel the same exact way. It takes a lot of time and patience. You will reach your hair goals soon!

I feel like this sometimes. I understand how you feel. I never had long hair either. the longest my hair was was SL and that was ten years ago.

Keep taking care of your hair and hope for the best. And like msa said you havent been on your journey for long. Give it time.

What is your regimen?

I agree with the other responders. Concentrate on health and retention - the length will come. I have been a LHCFer since March, and have gotten over 3 inches in healthy areas of my hair, and as little as 1.5 in in areas not as healthy. But the increased softness, shine, and moisture are quite significant. But you have to be patient, AND consistent.

For me, Bootcamp has had the most impact. It is unbelievable to me that I am not using heat on my hair, but the result is healthier hair. Taking pictures is IMPORTANT! You don't have to share them with anyone but yourself, but they will show you the difference in your hair - both length and health. I have found that pics taken a month apart show me the most progress. Even though my pics from March to April show no significant change, March and June did. These are what keep me encouraged because the improved health of my hair is so apparent.

Take care of the health - the length will come in time.

HTH!!

My advice is to not give up, take a few healthy hair practices (don't overwhelm yourself trying to do EVERYTHING everyone does) and stick with them, and take pictures!!!

Take pictures now, stick to doing good things to your hair for a year, and take pictures then, after a year has passed (and pictures during the months in between if you choose). I am certain the change you would see would be enough encouragement to drive you.

After my first few months, I didn't notice much of a change either, but because this forum (and others) showed me it was possible and I wasn't crazy, I was conviinced that if I stuck with it, good things would happen with my hair. I told myself I would try it for at least a year, and that mark passed about a week ago, and I noticed a HUGE change.

Don't be discouraged. :bighug:

I understand how you feel I thought I would never reach NL, so I just started focusing on the health instead of length. What really helped me is taking pics every 3-4mths and hiding my hair during that time that's how I really saw my progress and was shocked.

We all feel that way from time to time. I know what its like to be at the same length for the last 9+ years of my life. But everyone has the same theme here:
1. Progress Pics:Take progress pictures every 3-4 months--you would be surprised because you will actually see progress.
2. Have a set regimen--weekly washes, co-washes, deep conditioning, vitamins, etc.
3. Perservance--the ladies with long hair took years. I would say commit a year of going hard and get involved in the challenges that are not closed on the board to motivate you and be accountable to someone.
4. Patience: Remember, everyone on this board has from time to time been frustrated with progress due to a setback or the hair is not growing fast enough.
5. Protective Styling

Stop comparing yourself to someone else's progress b/c you will always be disappointed.

I am so glad I peeked into this thread... I think I'm gonna start taking pictures also to give me a boost of encouragement. I really want to make it to neck length by december of this year...

Share your regimen with us, including hair products. We will all chime in and offer feedback. You said it best in your original post, we worked (and are still working) hard for it. But once you have a consistent regimen, its really a breeze. It becomes second nature. The rest is just a matter of time and patience. So let us know what you are doing, and how long you have been doing it.

Loveurself, you are on the right track, you understand it is HARD WORK and it takes a lot of patience..it's about health and the length will follow. Continue to focus on the health of your hair, keep your ends moisturized and protected and before you know it...you will have longer hair-retention is the key. Don't give up..long hair is not a fairytale..it can be yours.

I joined recently too and after much reading I know a focus on hair health and a comprehensive understanding of your hair's traits and needs in the key to length.

There was actually a great thread along the lines of "Before LHCF, my hair was never longer than x" - it's a great source of motivation. I'll try to find it for you...

ETA: Found it. Here you go! I hope this helps!

I understand the patience, but the thing that I don't understand is people that's been on this board for like 3 years and still not SL (excluding those that BC). How is that. Now, I see I've made progress and all, but it's like what if I stop making progress. What if my terminal length is shorter than my goal. I do think that I can reach between SL and APL, because my hair was that length during elementary, but then as I got older, it was no longer than grazing shoulder. I finally reached my length prior to cutting, now this year is what will really be the determining factor for me. Again, I just don't understand why some still have short hair and been a member for a while. :perplexed

Your hair will be long. Since hair usually grows 1/2 inch per month that can seem slow. Here's a hair growth chart if this helps.

It definitely comes in time. I say give yourself 1 to 1 1/2 years before giving up. Remember everyone's hair grows 6-8" per year. Just keep stretching, moisturizing as needed, no combing and definitely deep conditioning and you should see some change.

I didn't get hair pass NL until I reached my 20s and started deep conditioning with heat. So hang in there and keep doing searches here on the site. Trust me, something will come through for you. Most of us have been through this. :yep:

I've been a member here for 4 years. Been taking care of my hair for three years. I have had several bald spots and broken patches, hair burnt off, etc. I kept switching stylists which also led to lots of setbacks. My nape has broken off completely-twice. My sides have broken off-twice. And of course I had to cut it several times.

I feel bad knowing that I've been here so long and my hair is still not where I want to be but I'm not going to give up on my hair. Where is that gonna leave me?? Even if I make APL 5 years from now, (although I do hope it doesnt take that long) it will be worth it to me.

Please be patient and focus on the health, the length will follow. Unfortunately hair grows painfully slow! ESPECIALLY when we're watching it like a hawk.Keep trying different products, regimens, and just find out what works for your hair, what it likes and what it doesn't.
Some have had short hair all their lives. Others had long hair when younger and maybe stopped taking care of it. The way i see it....we took a looong time doing the wrong things to our hair, so it may take a little while to start learning the RIGHT things to do and get on track. My hair had to start getting much healthier before i started seeing any decent length.

What kept me going alot was searching fotki's. If I saw someone with long beautiful hair or suere thick curly/kinky/coily hair that stood out to me, I would try and find out about their hair history, look in their fotkis, and I would find that many of them started in the same boat I was.

Take a look into this thread. This was one of my favorites when I felt down about my hair.
