Oprah's wears weave. (Why do celebs do this..?)

I am so sick of celebs lying. Oprah claims that she comes to her show with (HER) pressed hair and all I think is how does Oprah keep her hair pressed for months at a time & then next thing has the cutest curls? But I wish celebs would quit LYING about their hair. I feel like black celebrities shouldn't lie about their hair because young girls look at them and idolize their beauty and it sends a completely wrong message. I think Tyra is the only celebrity that openly states that she wears weave (even if she rarely rocks her natural).

Plenty of people wear wigs & weaves for protective styling. Out of all the celebs, I HIGHLY doubt that Oprah would lie. She has been extremely open and honest about her personal weight and beauty battles.

No I agree with that but when people were asking her about her weaves she made it seem like she comes to work everyday wearing her natural hair.

I think that most celebrities wear weaves/wigs as a form a protective styling since their own hair would be exposed to constant heat and styling for appearances.

This doesn't mean that they are all going to have hair down their back or even know how to take care of their own hair for that matter.

I think that it would be extreme to think that Lady O is going to have her tresses heat styled every single day for her television show. I am sure that she gives her hair a break, hence wigs or weaves.

Gabrielle Union is another celebrity that admits to wearing a weave. I remember reading an article on her years ago stating that she couldn't understand why celebrities do lie about wearing weaves and that when she was growing up she was confused as to why she couldn't do the hairstyles that she saw black celebrities wearing. I have to admit I used to be confused myself......you know how it is when you read in black hair mag that the celebrity states this is there real hair and it's about the same length as yours so you take the photo into your stylist to have your hair done and they are like you know that's a weave right!?!? I guess I just feel like Oprah shouldve said, "There are times that I DO wear weaves but in that pic, that is my REAL HAIR."

But youre probably right. Its not that serious. And Im sure to most of us on LHCF it really ISNT that serious. I just remember back in HS, and even now.,.some of my female friends hate themselves due to blacks taking on the european standards.

BUT if you think about it wearing weaves isnt sending out a good message either esp. to black women who are taught since birth that their hair cant grow & weaves is the only option. And I don't know why youre laughing about the last part. I am about to turn 20 now and when I was 18 one of my stylists whose from houston swore up and down all of beyonces hair was real because she used to do it when she was younger. 15 & 16 yr old girls think beyonces hair is real is no more ridiculous than some of the practices im sure YOU practiced pre-lhcf like the rest of us...

Might I add..didnt Rihanna say a couple years ago.. I cut off all of my long hair for a new look. So celebs do lie and I said I dont agree.

Personally I don't think its that serious. I do not think that people should have to admit to altering their beauty in those ways. If they admit to it great but if not who cares. I personally don't see the bad message it sends simply b/c we all alter our beauty in some way yes even with simple foundation.

On to the weaves. YES they are a necessity if you are in the lime light. Change up your hairstyle without damaging your hair. Celebs would have no hair on their head if they colored, curled, etc especially when you are talking about celebs that do multiple appearences in oen day.

She never said that she has never worn weave. On the contrary Oprah has done shows in the past that were centered around weaves and during which she admitted that she was currently wearing one too.

She did not lie about her hair. People take things out of context and run with them which is where the confusion actually comes from.

The issue is not that weaves are sending a bad message, it's about leading people to believe all that indian yaky sewn onto your scalp is actually growing from it. I have no problem with weaves or wigs, but I would be upset if someone said "yeah this is my hair" then a track fell out.

The show she did on weaves was WAAY back in the day. Ellin Lavar was on there as well and some other celebs or models who were also wearing weaves.

No offense taken. I wrote the thread based on what I have observed so I don't think that I have analyzed it improperly. I cant refer back to old Oprah shows because at the time I was too young to watch those shows. Not to mention everytime I personally saw Oprah it clearly looked like she had a curly weave. Being that life is built on perceptions I can ONLY go by what I perceived. And I am not the only one who perceived it this way. Alot of people were questioning the whole fiasco surrounding Oprah's response to her tweet and plenty don't even think that the pic she showed as her real hair is hers. Alot of people got from her response that she was talking about her hair in general, that whenever she wears it out its hers and not weave. All I stated is that I think she shouldve added that in her sentence. Had I been able to refer back to old episodes I wouldve never said anything and Im sure there are others that arent able to refer back to old episodes so can only go off what is available now. The only show I remember Oprah talking about her hair is when her stylist was talking about putting 'fillers' in her hair in which he was impying that he adds tracks to her hair to give it fullness & length so eh.

IA with you though, it probably doesn't apply to Oprah now that everyones stated that in episode ____ she talked about wearing a weave. But I don't think what I am saying is no different from when people said tyra never wears her natural hair & I pointed out various different times when she did..People only know the information that is accessible. I haven't read everything, just the OP's original message. I think Oprah said she isn't wearing a weave now, but has her hair pressed. She has worn weaves in the past, I think as a protective style.

I saw a show once where she said she wore weaves- especially in the summer to give her hair a rest and this was in the late 90's so it was no big secret.

I think a lot of celebs wear weaves and wigs because their hair would not survive the constant style changes. I remember reading that Maddona had constant hair issues in the 80's and 90's due to all the dye jobs etc before weaves/hair peices became so popular. So I imagine for people who have afro hair they have to ensure they protect their hair from constant styling procedures even more so because our hair needs more TLC to thrive.

Yes, this was taken out of context. That still didn't stop the 'Why don't people think black women can't have long hair?' crew from speaking up in that other thread. People assumed her straight, pressed style was a weave because Oprah does indeed wear weaves at times. When Oprah came out and said that style was her real hair, people started with the 'That's sad, black women are always accused of wearing weaves.' I dont think Oprah has lied but its only "serious" when they lie about not wearing a weave. Theres nothing wrong with being on the hush when your wearing a weave, but come on now dont sit here and lie if ppl ask you "Is that your hair?" or "Is that a weave?"

IMHO, if you lie about wearing a weave then that means you are ashamed of wearing a weave or wig.. What else could be the reason? Your hiding more then just a weave.. Yes its your buisness but dont wear a weave if you do not expect for ppl to ask or wonder Women have asked me was i wearing a weave and i told them straight up "Yes" because whats there to hide? This is exactly what I was thinking. I dont remember her ever saying that she didnt wear a weave. I just remember her saying that the particular straight style was, in fact, her hair. I've always assumed that the curly styles may not have been her hair.

I rememer that article. She earned so much respect from me for that.

Now, I don't follow Oprah that much, but is it possible that she DOES wear her natural hair to work and put no a 1/2 wig for the show? Just asking.

Oprah does wear weave. She has talked about it before. She was just talking about that particular style - which was her hair. Sometimes she wears her own hair sometimes she weares weave. That picture in the OP was clearly a weave without the track showing. This is not rocket science people.
