Ayurveda Questions/Help

OK, So I have done my first wash and my question is, how much oil is too much oil for pre-pooing. I drenched my hair in oil and as it rinsed off, the oil got all over my body and I'm still feeling a bit greasy on my backside, lol.

Also, I lost a lot of hair this first time around. I don't know if its because I'm trying to stretch which leads me to lose a few extra hairs. But is it normal?

On the plus side, the stuff doesn't smell as bad as I thought it would. Smells like herbs and natural stuff. Nothing funky. But then again I added Hibiscus Petal Powder which may have given it a nice scent.

Explosiva, LOL, you used WAY too much oiland probably no shower cap from the sounds of it. No harm done tho. I'm not sure about the stretching thing because my hair's completely natural (check those threads to see what they say, some use veda), but it isn't so unusual to lose some hair when you're trying a new product/technique. If it continues at the rate it did the 1st time and doesn't slow down, you might have a problem. We'll cross that road when we get to it.

Most people pre poo w/ a little more than average of amount of oil to what they normally use. I'd just grease it up and put it under a shower cap and wrap that in a towel so you don't have to worry about falling and hurting yourself! LOL

Hibiscus doesn't have much scent, but I think some people are more sensitive to smell than others. It's got nice moisturizing properties, so hibiscus is a good choice.

How did you hair come out when all done and dry? Do you like the result?

LOL, I did put a plastic cap on and a wrap to keep the oil from dripping but i put a lot because all the advice said to make sure to saurate the hair with oil. So i saturated it with oil. But I think I put TOO MUCH cause it was coming out of everywhere and I had to plug up holes with cotton. LOL. Next time, less oil. Plus, I didn't realize that with thoseoils, a lil goes a long way. I never pre-pooed with oil so I didn't know that lil concept. lol

My hair looks a lil greasy so yeah, i used too much oil but it's all good. I'll just use very lil oil and will do another rinse in two days to get the rest of it out. But it looks good and for the most part, my scalp itch has stopped which is great. I like it and if my hair stops shedding, i will definitely continue to use it, especially since I have a few months worth of this stuff. lol

I tend to lose some extra hair when strectching so i'm not too surprised but I will be if it keeps happening.

Yea you may have used too much oil. I did a prepoo with amla, vatika, & shaikaki oils(sp?) last nite for the first time. I massaged it on my scalp first then added the oil as if I were moisturizing but still put a little bit more. Then this afternoon I got in the shower and rinsed it with really hot water for about 5-10 min. My hair was so soft, easily detangled, and not greasy at all! This is my new staple for my weekly wash day prepoo!

Explosiva...well, we got another comer ^^^, but I guess it is pretty much you and me. I'm enjoying helping you start w/ this. LOL...you crack me up.

You probably can get away w/ not oil pre pooing IF you decide to do nothing until your next wash OR you could just wash/rinse the excess oil out. I don't know if you put in the oil by section, but section it off 1st and then put in your oil section by section. It'll help you control how much you use because you'll get a better feel for smaller parts. Pretty much pour a little pool in your hands and put it on a front section of hair. You'll know by look what's right and go from there.

Yes, NaturalBeauty87!!!! Thank you for your response.

Yeah, I went overboard. I think I got a lil nervous cause it seemed as if, if I didn't drown the hair in oil, my hair would get dry and crunchy. And I already have dry hair so you can only imagine. Plus I was watching TV while doing it so I wasn't paying attention. But at least now I know.

I hope some relaxed heads get in here cause I need to know what to do when its time for a touch up. I know CandyC says you have to stop for the week before and after but do I have to wash my hair with regular poo that week before? Does the first poo after have to be with regular poo or can I just start rinsing? I need to know cause I'm due for a touch up in like two weeks.

Jamaraa, I must be hopeless cause I did section the hair cause I want to saturate/drown each individual strand with massive amounts of oil and not miss one spot. Wow, I'm a complete mess. It did feel soft when putting it up into a bun though. Lol

Thanks for being my ayurveda big sister!! ;)

I'll join in on this conversation because I've been dabbling in Ayurveda also, but need help. I currently try to do it twice a week. My tea rinses lately have consisted of Kalpi Tone and Amla. I've been pre-pooing with Shikakai oil, but I'm almost out of that, so I'll probably start prepooing with Amla oil.

What other powders are conditioning ones other than Amla?

Do you need to do a DC after each ayurveda tea rinse? If so, for how long? With or without heat?

Can I join  I don't post much, but I just have to say I really like ayervedic. I have been doing yoga for a few years and it really just recenly clicked I should be using it for health and hair car as well. I've been using powders and oils for about 6 months. I oil with vatika for at least an hour, then I either use a Shikaiki (sp)Amla Shampoo , or the powders. I don't use boilng water, just hot out of the tap, and let it cool, then use Neutragena everyday deep conditionerand I've had good results. My hair is very very dry, and I found that for about a week after I use henna, my ends are extremely dry. I do have a question if anyone would like to answer:look: what if anything are you using as moisturizer? I do use coconut oil, but I am not sure if that is enough.
Thanks :)

I don't know much about kalpi tone, but I know it's a compound. Let me look it up before I say anything about that product.

Ok...bhringraj and brahmi are good conditioning powders. Amla's a good oil to pre poo w/, but you might consider bhringraj oil if you don't want to replace your shikakai. Use whatever is most convenient and cheapest for you...all work well!

AFAIK, no you don't have to DC after every tea. Indians are just getting hip to conditioners as we know them in the West (they like the Western stuff too) and Vedic conditioners are harder to find than shampoos generally. Traditionally, they used the powders/concoctions and oils for their whole regime, but that won't work for African textured hair methinks. Just condition however you see fit and according to your needs.

tld723....I like SunSilk stuff for moisture, but I also alternative between my homebrewed stuff in a spray bottle, Moisture Max, and Optimum lotion. My homebrew and SunSilk are lighter than the other two I named. It just depends on how dry I am at the mo to decide what to use.

This is a great thread. Thanks for starting it, Explosiva. Even though I've been a member for a while, I've never really known where to begin with Ayurvedic products, either. :ohwell:

Great advice. I have been using Ayurvedic powders and oils for about six months now and I am having great results. Although I have no suggestions at this time since I am still learning. jamaraa has done a wonderful job answering questions and giving advice. Keep up the good work.

Yes, Jamaraa has been great with helping me/us!!

AngelDoll- You have had amazing results with just six months of use. What is your reggie?

Thank you Explosiva.

Here is my regimen, and I learned it all from here on LHCF.

My Regimen:

Preshampoo Oil Treatment: amla & shikakai oil the night before wash day (sleep with hair in plastic shower cap)

Shampoo: Ayurvedic hair powders (amla 2 tsp, shikakai 1 tsp, brahmi 1 tsp) in 1 cup hot water, 1 cup cold water, 2x per week
Shikakai bar every 4 weeks and as needed

Cowash: 2x per week, w/Tresemme Pro-Vitamin B & Aloe, Vitamin E (do this after each powder wash)

Deep Condition: weekly with Pantene R & N Deep Conditioning Mask (for 45-60 min under conditioning cap)

Daily Moisturize: Giovanni Direct Leave-In Moisturizer, Qhemet Biologics amla & olive heavy cream, Coconut oil to seal

Nightly Scalp Massages: Gro-Aut oil and Mahabhringaraj oil

Sleep with satin cap. The only time I use direct heat is when I flat iron my hair. I will not flat iron again until October for my birthda. After that, I will only flat iron twice a year to check length and trim if needed.

I also take a multi-vitamin (Wal-Mart Brand) daily.

That's it, hope this helps.

definitely helps. Thanks. Are you also natural?

Does anyone relax?

Glad I could help. Yes I am natural since 2004 and loving it.

Here's a pic, I never wear my natural hair loose because it dries out really, really fast.

LOL- I can't even pronounce half of the stuff.

Powders- Brahmi, Alma, Shikakai, Hibiscus Flower

Oils-brahmi/alma,vatika,mahabringaraj, bhringraj

That's all for now.

I thought I would jump in on the conversation. I love anything ayervedic. I researched it ALOT before I started doing it. I really like the Dabur Vatika oil. I stoped using the mahabringaraj tho cause of the overwhelming smell. I could not get past it with anything I mixed it with or with any eo's I added. I also stopped using the Amla oil by Dabur, again, cause of the very strong smell. Plus I got the one with mineral oil in it. I just use the Amla powder and make my own. (I want to get the Amla fruit and try to make an oil with it) http://www.amlaoil.com/

I love using the powers. I infuse them in oil or water and I love the results.

Infuse your own oils and powder and mix the oil with different butters. Also be careful if you think about mixing the Hibiscus powder with butters. My powder is red. So, I don't know if it will stain or not. Does any body know about this?

I use the infusions as a hot oil treatment. Mixed in some of the old hair poo's and conditioners you have laying around. Oil rinse. Baggy. Or just use it as a sealer. You can add eo's if you don't like the earthy smell.

I use the powders mixed in water as a daily spritz or hair rinse. I dilute it with extra water if I use it as a hair spritz.

If you infuse your own stuff, make sure you filter all the powder out of you final product. Here is a very good thread about infusing the powders:

Here is another thread with alot of good information for you:

I think you will really love it the more you do it. I have noticed mainly that my hair has thickened up alot doing ayervedic.
Happy growing!

Yes, hibiscus can leave a little color on your hair, but it's not going to be noticeable on black or very dark brown hair and will fade.

As for infusions, you don't have to strain...they get better and stronger w/ time. All you have to do to keep out the "grit" is let the powder settle for a few days and then pour your infused oil (carefully) into whatever container you plan to use.

(I'll read the links and come back later)

Yeah, I don't usually strain my oils till I get ready to use some. I usually strain with coffee filters if I'm going to do a spritz.

I infuse my oils in a jar with a lid on it. When I get ready to use it I put a square piece of cloth over the mouth of the jar with a band around it. And then pour carfully. I got this trick from another site. Work really good if you are mixng real herbs with the powders.

^^^the prices listed are LAUGHABLE in some of these places, seriously.

Source #1...US made so called "organic" stuff. $17 bucks for a mystery oil, no ingredients listed? NOPE! For me, the kokum looked pretty good, but the veda is for tourists.

Source #2...Not comfortable w/ the fact that they're warning about knockoffs. How are you to know you're getting the real stuff and the site isn't a knockoff itself?

Source #3...LOLOLOLOL. These folks are sending this stuff FROM INDIA. The prices are outrageous. Sunsilk shampoo $15? Nice American and Euro people are mostly their customers, methinks.

Source #4---heard of it, but know little about it.

The Indus ladies are great and clueless like we are about the vastness of Veda, but the ones in India seemed based around Chennai (ie Madras) and use alot of local terms and lots of the fresh herbs of the stuff we're using. The US based ones seemed to have hair fall mostly from stress and had problems finding some stuff we use here. Fresh stuff, BTW, handles a bit differently than powdered and some of it we'll never see here in the US, but they are entertaining ladies. They too fear "hair fall"!

Why not just buy a cheap shamppo and conditioner as an experiment and add your powder/infused oil, tea, etc to the bottle just to see what happens? It's surely cheaper. You could even buy "blank" bases from the soap/lotion sources for your experiment.

Ok to put these prices in prospective just so you see what I'm talking about. Last week I went to the Indian store and spent about $23. I got a Vatika oil, some mehendi oil (for body NOT hair), a box of tulsi, a box of shikakai, some rose water (pure stuff), and 3 kinds of henna. The hennas were 1 tube of premixed stuff, 1 150gr bag of Karishma (w/ goodies like shikakai and amla), and.....drumroll a box of 100 gr Jamila for the princely sum of $1.99!

You got people online w/ the nerve to sell Jamila for 100g=$8 or 35 gr= $5.....seriously. $8 US is nearly 350 IRP!!

Explosiva...I DID adopt you already! ;)

Thanks for all the information. My instincts was warning me about these sites. Thats why I hadn't ordered from any of them. Thank you again.

I already do what you suggested, and with great results. I was just thingking I would get different results from using the Indian poo's. (but hair falling out is not the results I want:lachen:)
What can I say, its the (recovering) PJ in me.
:lachen:

Thanks again. your knowledge on this subject is truly AWESOME!:worship2:

Angkin...just wanted you to know I wasn't being funny towards you, but those prices floored me. As for the US based site, LOL....they know how to take something very basic and charge incredible prices for it, but they'll find buyers. LOL..the Whole Wallet crowd will and seem to already eat this up, but for folks on a budget (read ME)...so way no how.

About mustard oil (one of the ingredients in one of the oils in the links), if you just want that, just buy mustard powder and infuse it. It's hard to import to the States because of fears about mustard gas :evillaugh: so best just buy the powder and infuse it or cook some stovetop. Mustard powder is easy to find and you can do it in almost any oil. Of course, it's edible!

Hair fall= their term for breakage and shedding. LOL...quite literal and to the point, eh?
