You can easily lather it up by drenching the hair with water, wet the bar and then rub against the scalp and/or hair. Doesn't take much before the suds start popping everywhere.

I just received my Anita Grant shampoo bar 2 days ago and LOVE IT!! Very moisturizing, excellent slip and clean hair. I used it today on my daughter's natural and THICK hair and her hair is sooo soft and moisturized. Even my hands are not dried out after shampooing with it. They feel moisturized and not dried out at all!

Anita's Babassu Shampoo bar is definitely better than liquid shampoo. I just wish it were sold in retail stores vs. abroad so I didn't have to pay the S&H fees BUT this bar seems like it is going to last quite a while.

So do you lather the shampoo up in your hands then distribute or do you have to rub the bar against your scalp?

Thanks for the Review!!! I can't wait to try this stuff since I've finished a bunch of my liquid shampoos! I want to try Anita Grant but I'm afraid of what the shipping rates will be!!

OK...PJs and Lurkers quit buying all the Babassu shampoo bars!!!!!! I can't get any from Anita Grant or ChagrinValley!!!!

Since I posted a year ago (smile) in this thread, I have used the following shampoo bars: Chagrin Valley: carrot, milk and honey, nettle, rosemary and lavendar and butter bar as well as Earth soap's shampoo bar and shikakai hair soap. All are very nice. The best CV of the one's I tried was the rosemary and lavendar shampoo bar and it was the one I wanted the least.

I have only found one chagrin valley bar that worked for me. A lot of them give me crayon hair. That's the best I can describe it, but a vinegar rinse afterwards helps a lot.

I'm currently using a shikakai shampoo bar that has become a staple. As long as I can buy it, I won't go back to liquid shampoo. I used it today without conditioner. And I am a conditioner addict.

I've never tried a shampoo bar but I have a shea butter bar from Epicurean Shea Butter Company that I just started using to wash my face...I heard it's good to wash your hair with too...I think I may give it try...it only has three ingredients shea butter, coconut oil and distilled water.

Can anyone vouch for any other shampoo bars that really clean, moisturize, etc without giving the crayon affect and stripping hair?

Cichelle, I tried to send you a PM but it says that you're not accepting them. :(

I've used shampoo bars by Chagrin Valley and I was not impressed - they were not very moisturizing. Plus I usually add oils and thin out my castille shampoos with water- depending on what my hair needs - and you can't do that with a shampoo bar.

I love the shikakai bar, and the lather is amazing. It is just so unexpected that it would lather like that. I like it better than mixing shikakai with water and pouring it on my hair.

Where are you ladies purchasing your shikaikai bars? I was going to get the anita grant bar but shipping to the states is off the chain... Also, how moisturizing is the shikaikai bar for 4a/b natchal sistahs?

I use the Swastik Shikakai Bar and there is definitely a technique that goes along with it.

I NEVER rub the bar on my head.

Here is my technique:

Oil my hair the night prior. If I'm in a rush I'll oil about 30 minutes before.
I usually use Vatika Frosting or CoCastaShikakai Hair Oil.

I then wet my hair using the shower water. I lather the bar in my hands rubbing the suds down my hair.

Then I rinse.

I do not repeat the process. Afterwards I condition. My hair has never experienced dryness using this method.

What do you ladies mean when you say "crayon effect"? Hair that feels waxy?

Yeah, I guess waxy is another word for it. It's kind of hard to explain. The first thing that came to mind when I experienced it was a crayon. It's about the way the hair feels, not the color. (Someone once thought I meant the soap colored my hair.)

With CV bars, I think it makes a difference if you have hard or soft water, too.

This is how I use my shikakai bar, too...except I use different oils.

This method results in no dryness and clean hair.

I'd like to know where you are purchasing also. I asked on another thread, but they just sent me to a site that told ABOUT the brand but did not have purchasing options.

Bought my Swastik Shikakai bars for 89cents at the local Indian store. Also bought some cheap henna for about 1.59. After using the two this past weekend, I don't know if I will ever go back to shampoo. And I think using the henna mixed with yogurt on a weekly basis is going to transform my hair.

I have never been this happy with my hair w/o using some kind of heat. Just so darn healthy!!!

When I go back to the Indian store tomorrow and clean out her stock, she's going to think I'm crazy. But I can't risk not being able to get my hands on this stuff when I need it.

I'm going to tell her to keep the supply coming, because from the dust on the product, I don't think they sell too much of it.

I've never used shampoo bars before, and I'm willing to try it but we don't have any indian stores here in my area or surrounding areas. So is there a site online that provides free samples of these shampoo bars for me to try it before I decide to actually purchase them? Even WalMart and beauty supply stores here don't have any kind of shampoo bars, only one I've seen as of anything was a beauty soap called AMBI for the skin! LOL:( TIA!

The best place to purchase the shikakai bar is from an Indian market. They have the cheapest prices ($.99 to $1.99).

www.smallflower.com ($1.95)
www.Mehndiskinart.com ($3.95)
www.indianblend.com ($2.99)

I've only used the bar once and my hair felt clean and strong but not stripped. I still needed my conditioner for moisture.

I wanted to order the bars from Anita Grant but yeah, the shipping cost is too high.

HTH

i just got two shikakai bars today from smallflower.com. it's the 3 in 1 bar. i can't wait to use it. i think i will 2 nite.

Chagrin Valley's
Babassu & Marsh Mallow...left hair soft, had good slip, nice fragrance
Nettle......left hair soft, nice fragrance...I like these 2:yep:
-----------------
Shikakia .....thorough scalp cleansing, very drying to my hair
but was a great facial scrub:ohwell:

yes i used the bar 2nite. i liked that it made my hair really soft. i didn't really need conditioner. it's a keeper. is this the same soap that makes people's hair turn a little red? i actually wouldn't mind that so much.

Sounds like you had a good experience. For the most part I think only a couple of us experienced some subtle color change, most did not. But the brand is Swastik Shikakai soap.
