I generally rollerset my hair every week, but I've stopped for the past few weeks because my newgrowth is out of control. If you see my avy, that was a pic taken in April after two weeks post-relaxer and my roots are poofy and way underprocessed. So I stopped rollersetting because I didn't want to over comb of manipulate that area. I've been airdrying as of late and will continue to do so all summer.

I have fine hair, too, and maybe rollersetting is far too much manipulation right now.

When I finally get my touch-up in August, I'll start rollersetting again... ;)

Totally OT: Do you have any pics of your NG? Your hair sounds like mine...I think you might be my hair twin...:p

I love rollersetting, but what I hate was sitting under the dryer. I use to be able to airdry my set but as my hair got healtier it took too long to dry, so now I will airdry my hair and when it is 80% dry I will put some flexi rod rollers in and let it finish drying.

For those who can't get the hang of regular rollers I really would really suggest trying flexi rods for a nice set.

A fe reasons. One, I am too lazy and two I don't have a dryer. I used to rollerset all the time when I was transitioning.

combo of dont know how to and too lazy
i did it one time && it took forever but it did turn out good tho
i dont know how stylists do it so quickly

  1. I have not mastered the technique yet
  2. In the past I have not been patient enough to sit and let it dry
  3. In the past my fine hair would quickly revert and turn into a puffy mushroom
  4. Shrinkage
  5. Sitting under a hot dryer for hours
Despite all of this I will try it in the future. It sounds like us ladies with fine hair have a harder time with rollersetting:scratchch

What she said!!

I like rollersetting and then flat ironing my hair. my hair doesn't turn out that nice when I blow dry, I wonder, like the other poster, how you manage to wear it down if you don't rollerset first? Are that many ladies still blow drying (ouch, abuse!!!)

I do not rollerset because my daily hair styles are buns, Lace Flair ponies or french rolls and twists. I always leave my Dominican salon after my touch up with un combed roller set. I swish around town for a while with my hair down; {it falls beautifully after I leave} to show it off then I'm home in the PM for a soft french roll, lots of post relaxer treatments such as SURGE 14, MOTIONS LEAVE IN, or my new love NEXXUS or SALERM mixed with DABUR AMLA LITE. I can roller set very well but know I hate to sleep in 'break it off hard rollers' and I love keeping my hair hidden and growing while at work.

Rollersetting has not fit into my hair care routine. I prefer to wash, deep condition with heat, rinse, add leave-ins, bun, and go to bed. I can do this 2x a week, no sweat. I usually do this when I get home around 10 in the evening. This whole process takes about 45min-1 hr. If I washed, deep conditioned w/ heat, rollerset, sat back under the dryer until my hair was dry, then went to bed, I think I would be up until 2 in the morning! And I wouldn't even think about doing my hair until a week or more had passed.

I totally agree. I don't know how to maintain the style because I like to moisturize daily, con-wash at least once a week, wash once a week and use no heat.

its a mixture of sucking at it each time I try and then also being too lazy to sit under the hair dryer, I hate sitting under the dryer ..

If you saw my last rollerset you would say

I use to rollerset when I had a relaxer, but now that I'm all natural I'm not sure it would even work with my hair. I would hate to spend the time and it still come out looking like an afro.

Is it possible to rollerset natural hair and have it smooth?

Since you guys don't do rollersets like that? How are you "doing" your hair on wash days. Braidouts and buns only? Using heat like me? What do you guys do. I need some options so I can lower my heat.

I don't use heat so I've been airdrying in a bun, mostly.

HoneyDew, you asked about options for styling other than rollersetting or using heat. Here's what I do, depending on how much time I have. Keep in mind that I wear protective styles 99% of the time:

-Pull hair back into a twist or 2 big pin curls & air dry (keeping scarf tied down over front/sides of hair overnight), wear in a French twist the next day.
-Pull hair back into a loose ponytail and add a magnetic roller to the end, airdry, wear in a Frech twist the next day.
-Tie scarf over front/sides of damp hair, airdry most of the way, add flexirods and sleep on them overnight. Wear hair in a curly updo the next day.
-Same as above, but put about 10 bantu knots in my hair before going to bed (in place of flexirods).

If I'm in a rush, I may sit under my hooded dryer for 30 mins. or so to speed up drying before I style my hair and go to bed.

I rollerset occasionally. I'm really too lazy for that and it's just too time consuming. I rather someone else do it on my hair.

I'M SUPA LAZY AND I JUST HAD MY BABY. IT TAKES TO MUCH TIME BUT WHENEVER I DO MY ROLLERSET, I ENJOY IT BECAUSE I RARELY FEEL LIKE MANIPULATING WITH MY HAIR.

I'm doing the daily co-washing thing
until I'm done with my 24 week stretch
but after that I plan to do the weekly rollerset thing.

Every rollerset I ever tried, (I tried too many times to count.), has always come out frizzy. I ended up having to wash my hair again to get the frizziness out. Now I spray a leave-in/heat proctector and blw-dry on medium setting.

My hair does grow the best when I go to a stylist and have it rollerset.

I don't rollerset, but I have tried to a couple of times and my results weren't satisfactory. I don't roller set because

1. I have trouble securing the rollers. I can't seem to get the rollers to stay secured tightly to my head. Me and those clips don't get along.
2. It takes so long to roll my hair. I'm frustrated and tired by the time I get it all on rollers.:perplexed
3. Sometimes my rollers won't all fit under my hood dryer at once which makes drying take longer. I have mid back length hair so I have to use the grey and purple rollers.:(
4. After all of my hair is finally dry and I take it down, my hair isn't full of curls. It's slightly curled and full of volume, but you couldn't tell I just roller set my whole head. Again, very frustrating especially after all the work I just did.:wallbash:

I love how the rollerset comes out!!! The biggest thing is trial and error though. I now know that I cannot use setting lotion after 4 weeks post relaxer. My NG will not allow it. Mousse is the only thing that works after that point. I love the fullness and body that rollersetting gives and if you need to refresh your curls after a few days...pull out the carusos

I am tender headed and my scalp feels so dry after I sit under a dryer for 1 hour. I actually get flakes. Yikes!!!

I do sometimes, but I don't like how it looks on my short hair. Maybe once i take these braids out I'll give it another try.

I used to rollerset 1-2x/week religiously. Now, no can do. my hair is long and thick and the style versatility just isnt there for me. It takes me about 1 hour to roll up my hair and then I have to sit under the dryier 2-3 hours. Additionally, I could never rollerset my hair and then walk out the house with it looking like how I would want. I would have to wait till the curls fell a little bit or wrap it.
Therefore, I dont really rollerset anymore.

takes too long. By the time I finish washing and conditioning, all I can stomach is a bun of some kind. I have things to do man
But it does save time during the week though, so I guess the time spent setting the hair ends up being worth it in the long run. :scratchch

It's very fitting that this thread should appear on the first page again.

You ladies inspired me to try to rollerset again. Last week I gave up my professional manicure and pedicure to replace my old, conked out hard hat dryer. I also purchased magnetic rollers, end papers and extra clips. After washing my hair and DC'ing with my new toy, couple of hours ago, I attempted to once again rollerset my hair. One hour later I had one, yes one, roller on the top of my head, and it was loose! I went and got the blow dryer.

I didn't open the extra clips or the end papers. They are going back to Sallys in the morning. I keep the rollers and see if my Sister can help me next time I see her. She rollersets all the time.
