An Afro Means "Tangled Hair"

I only wore my hair in a shrunken fro after my bc. But now that my hair is longer I don't. My hair loves to curl on itself and shrunken fros are a NO go for me. That just leads to tangles and knots galore. So I always stretch my hair or shingle instead of wng.

Ummmm no an AFRO does not mean tangled hair.... if ur technique is on point then u can get an afro without a tangle....duh...but whatever she's a "guru" and swear she knows all there is to know so

*side eye* the mixed comment

what comment? I felt her:look:

Because her hair has a looser texture, ppl keep commenting on her vids, saying that she's mixed or asking if she's mixed.

You can see it in the comments section of several vids.....I keep thinkin, why are they asking that? Why does it matter? Basically ppl are "challenging" her blackness due to her hair texture...:nono:

I haven't seen the comments, but I'm with you... I don't see why they are thinking she is mixed. Kimmay's hair texture is not loose like a mixed person. Her hair is kinky.

oh that! I'm so used to the ignorance, that it kinda is just stupid now. The stereotypes about real black vs. mixed are so dumb and misinformed.

:lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen: foreal people are going ridiculously HARD for her.

Anywho I had never understood what people meant by her voice and tone until this video. There is nothing wrong with proper pronunciation of terms and enunciation but it was overkill in this video compared to others. There is nothing wrong with professionalism, not in the least, but her tone was coming across as arrogant to me.

And before the kumbuya crew comes and quotes me and asks me 50/11 questions with foam dripping from their mouths onto their tear soaked keyboards let me answer for you in advance: you mad?

lol - To be honest I think her manner of presentation is somewhat annoying so I don't watch, I'm not a subber. To each her own though. <shrugs>

Hmmm...it doesn't take my hair even an hour to detangle wet or dry....lol. I still have thick hair.

I think we make too much out of Afro type hair. But in my opinion 5 hours is too long to detangle.

If I am not straightening. After and good cleaning and conditioning(and detangling in the shower) that takes 15-20 minutes.

Detangling and oiling and carefully combing each section into double stranded twists--for me-- takes 45 minutes tops depending on how thick I make them. Keep conditioner and water on hand.

All together roughly not much over an hour. I am careful with it...

Granted I rarely wear an afro anymore but I did every day in the past, and I've never spent close to an hour let alone five hours. Five hours is excessive. Seems like it would be a better idea to use the five hours to get out and see the world around you instead or get a more productive/interesting hobby. Life is short. I'd want to have more to say for myself other than - "I came, I saw, I detangled my hair ...."

I know this is an old thread but Sera says it takes 6 to 8 hours to detangle her hair so maybe it once the type 4's get to a certain length the detangling time gets realy long idk tho.

I'm not natural, but I do agree with her. If I try to air dry my relaxed hair, it gets poofy (similar to an afro texture) and the dryness and tangling are unbelievable. I do think she was correct in pointing out that shorter hair may not run into similar problems. However, as it grows, it really does tangle if you have 4a/b hair. Mine certainly does.

Long detangling sessions are not reserved for only long type fours. My hair always takes me a ridiculous amount of time to detangle. It is never under 2 hours. Never in the past almost 5 years.

I agree with Kimmaytube on this topic. My wash and gos and twist outs even get tangled now. I am now experiencing ssk which takes the detangling process longer. A fro without it being stretched is out of the question for me.

i have long detangling sessions as well maybe 1 hour to 2 hours. i'm just confused why so many people said for kimmay 4 hours was crazy when sera has said it takes her 6 to 8 hours. are there any type 4 naturals who are beyond bsl that have a short detangling session? i literally don't know just curious

I remember her saying that and I think that is too long as well.

I just dont get it taking all this time to detangle .

I see Chimes' hair and she is WL, while she styled. I dont recall her saying how long it took but I seriously doubt it took over 2 hours.

I could never see myself detangling at anything over 1 hour. Anything after that and I need to re-evaluate what my routine is.

Trust me, if you're natural and your hair has ANY type of curl to it AT ALL, whether defined spirals or a slightly undefined texture, PEOPLE WILL QUESTION THE VALIDITY OF YOUR BLACKNESS. They think that AA's all have 4xyz hair and that we can't wear any other style than an afro, which is why when we come out with wash n go's and twists outs people (even our very own black people) come out like "Ooooooh, r u mixedededed??!?"

her retention is not common because most AA dont know how to take care of their hair to get it to that length.

If you watch her YouTube videos you'll see how she achieved her length which she is happy to share. She looked at the science of AA hair and tried different recipes to achieve a leave-in which smoothed hair follicles which = healthier hair. She has worked very hard to achieve her growth and formulated retention methods which avoided minimum breakage.

With her help I'm now achieving growth which I have never before experienced.

I really think it comes down to how you detangle. There are some here who detangle with their fingers and then gently comb through their hair and there are others like me. I comb through with a wide tooth comb with conditioner(sometimes) and gently pull the comb through. I wouldn't sit for hours detangling with my fingers so I won't have any breakage. If it takes all that to grow my MBL hair to waist length, well I guess I won't be waist length.

One to two hours and that's it. I'm not spending that much time on my hair, that's why I went natural.

that's why i don't wait a week anymore to detangle my hair. my hair gets tangles easily and the shed hairs get caught in the mix. so when i retwist my hair at night, i finger detangle too to remove shed hairs, tangles, and knots.

OT- i wonder if i can shingle my hair sometimes if i want to have the effect of wash and go hair without the knots and tangles?

I pretty much do the same thing to my hair. If I don't twist at night and cowash/shampoo 3 days a week, I'm asking for trouble.

afro + my hair = tangled hair

Even after I detangle, even when I do my usual twist outs, my hair is never tangle free. I will never be able to run a comb smoothly through my hair every day, all of the time. Kinky/curly/coily hair tangles. No, it isn't a sign that something in my regimen needs to change so boom. There are certain degrees of tangled-ness, IMO. Minimal tangles is the goal for me.

Tangled hair isn't a bad thing. I can handle it.

It is the same thing

Its bad for me due to the fact my strands are on the thinner side and like to snap like a twig. My hair will always tangle because its kinky/curly, but there is a difference between regular tangles and knots and locks, something my hair loves to do when I wear WnGs..
