An Afro Means "Tangled Hair"

It seems to me that she made some good points. Shrunken type 4 hair tends to lead to tangles. Stretched type 4 hair is the way to go if you don't want to deal with tangles. I already knew this but there are many folks who don't know and for them this is a very informative vid.

her wet shrunken afro, yes. That's pretty much right. She probably should ask some older folk about the way they used to wear afros, i.e. the blow out afro. I got one done in a salon before. I cried, it hurt so bad. Anyway, the kind of afros they wore in the 70s were not tangled hair (my daddy is the groom in this pic):

Well, I haven't watched Kimmay's video :look: but I did watch afrostory's response video earlier today and I pretty much agree. Afrostory also made the point that it's inaccurate to view afros as authentically "more African" than manipulated/stretched styles.

Something interesting that I've found in my experience with my own tightly-coiled hair is that it seems afro puffs on wet shrunken hair aren't so bad when my coils clump together. When I've tried to do a combed out afro by manipulating my damp hair, that was a disaster because the strands were separated and didn't remain stretched - they shrunk and started tangling because they lacked coherence.

Please lets remember she is talking about her hair and experiences, she is answering a frequently asked question.
I do agree with her, because this has been my experience too.
As for her tone and pronounciation, i think its because people often make snarky comments about her and personal attacks towards her.
I like her pronounciation, its clear enough not to be affected by her accent, not all youtubers are native speakers or are able to easily understand all accents, so i'm thankful she takes care to make herself understood.
Re detangling time, i have taken that long many times since i do it dry as on damp or wet hair it results in breakage.

Natural hair just isnt this "technical" or "complicated". What was going with those huge 70's afros, wire pics and grease for "moisture". You should hear my parents hair care regimen back then....lol! In two years their fros were huge!
AliciaJamesMusic is one of my fave youtubers. She is also a talented singer/songwriter. Her hair is awesome! WASH AND GO and SHRUNKEN FRO was her everyday style as she grew her hair. Funny thing is she credits Kimmay for helping her get to where she is now. She even sort of looks like Kimmay...lol.

I know right. ppl are making hair growing so freaken complicated. Back in the day no ones hair regimen was this complaicated, most probably didnt even have a regimen..but yet they still had long hair.

Soon women wont be able to stand in front of the microwave because their baby hairs might fry, Or the new craze will be Bird Poo Conditioner, because if a bird poops on you that means good luck & if you have good luck then your hair will grow to the floor..Or you can only use a tooth brush to detangle your hair because we dont wont to much friction..Or someone will create hair steroids to make our hair bigger, because the bigger the hair the closer to god, and if we get close to god..for sure we will meet our hair goal:grin:

I agree with her and that's why I won't allow my hair to shrink up like that.

I see your point but for many long hair was not achievable in the past or now. While KISS is the best way to achieve hair growth, many who never had long hair in their families or for themselves are willing to try many different avenues to get it.

I think it's wrong to assume ling hair is so easy to get. I know many guys who do the wash, blow-dry, grease braid for 2-3 weeks, do rag nightly and their hair growth is nil. For many, it's complicated to find the right products and regimen before they can keep it simple:

Kimay's hair doesn't really shrink though. I'll show her some shrinkage! When she showed her hair out in her 'fro', that's a stretched out fro to me and I don't think that would casue alot of tabgles unless it was super windy outside or something. But then again, I think Kimmay is a little too paranoid when it comes to her hair sometimes.

Comment from DH @ 1:35: "People actually listen to that voice for the entire video??"

My thoughts exactly. Tis all.
:lachen: I was watching her the other day and Dh said the same thing. He was like " Whats wrong with her voice?" Needeless to say, he is a man and he didn't take to well on how she spoke:ohwell:.

I think she had some valid points.People want fros, but I don't see myself wearing them because my hair would be on big 'hard to comb' ball and I can only imagine what will happen the longer my hair gets:perplexed.

ET:I still don't get this obsession with wearing your hair exactly how it comes out of your scalp:rolleyes:. I mean if someone want to manipulate it for easy styling or for it to look a way the wearer wants it to look, why not? This is going back to the question, "Who is a true natural?"

I dont understand what the big deal is ... shes talking about HER hair and why SHE doesnt wear her hair in a shrunken fro. When did is become an issue for someone to decide how they wish to wear their hair???

anyhooooo re: the shrunken fro=tangles, I agree but for ME.... if I wear a tangle prone style such as a shingled or wash and go, once its wash time I just slap on some VO5, let it sit then detangle.

the only difference from a regualr detangling session is that I let the condish sit in my hair for bit.

People that don't like her videos, I don't understand why they comment/watch them. :-/ I don't like eggplant so you best believe you won't find me eating it. :-D

wow she is really talking to me like i'm stupid and loud so that she sounds smart. she's overkill with enunciation as if it will make her sound like a damn youtube professor.

A lot of people are so negative towards this woman. I just don't understand it.:nono: If you don't like her voice, don't watch her videos.:look: If you can't stand her, don't watch her videos! :look: Happy Sunday!

I thought it was silly how she was showing off Goody products that one can buy at their local Target and Wal-Mart. I wish she would start selling earring trees because I need one.

Anyway she has some valid points and besides she is talking about her hair.

I think some viewers miss the point due to her tone. She was talking about a shrunken fro on wl hair equals tangles for her. Thus, she reiterate and eunuciate so that folks will comprehend, I guess it didn't work  She said with hair 6 in and shorter it wasn't a problem for a shrunken fro.

We're starting this Sunday right, aren't we?

Honestly though.... I'm not sure whether I agree but I'm not sure whether I disagree either. I feel like Kimmay presents herself as an expert but I'm not sure whether she has experience beyond dealing with her own hair. She is good at self-promotion though. For some people an afro is an amazing low manipulation style that keeps your hair off of clothes and damaging scrunchies, clips, etc. Each to his own.

I was wondering if she has trained as a hairstylist with degree in hand. To me, that would be much more of an "expert." I'm speaking in general, though, of all the YT experts out there. I've watched a couple of her vids and a couple each of other tutorials. I just wonder how others give a person "expert" status. I don't think it's "haterzville" for questioning.

I have always wondered how others give people "expert" status too. All of a sudden you'll see "hair guru" or "natural hair guru" near their names, and it makes you wonder how and/or when they became gurus, especially since many of them just give their hair tips (which they've often learned from someone else), or they're seeking advice for themselves.

I dont think long hair is east to obtain. I just think us women get too caught up in obtaining the long hair. I tried everything under the moon when i first started this hair thing..actually im still trying stuff -im going to try an egg protein treatment, Just bought some Shea Moisture products because im still searching for a moisturizing shampoo but anyways..

I
have now realized that I dont need a complicated regimen, I may still try different products but my regimen is getting more simple as the days go by. Complicated & Tedious regimens "Makes my butt itch"..

I am not normally in this section but her tone is not appealing. It's not what you say but how you say it. And honestly I don't see what is so wonderful about her hair. My hair is natural and I do not need to do all the things she does and we still get the same results. KISS is my regiment. Not everyone is a hater! Geez!

Now THAT is an afro!!! If I ever go back to being natural, I'm callin' yo daddy STAT for his regimen. :yep:

I'm sorry but an Afro puff is my go to style in between installs and styles and I don't get tangled hair. I agree if your moisture level and protein levels are up to par then its just like regular detangling sessions. I'm just saying and I have mostly 4b hair *Kanye Shrug*

nubenapp22, Kimmay seemed to say that at your length afros should be no problem, which is probably why we can honestly say they haven't been problems. But there's also the question of afros of the 70's...folks wore BAAs w/o problems, but I dunno if the hair ever got to WL so we'd have to get a guinea pig with Kimmay's hair length who wears afros regularly to chime in.

I do agree with everyone else, that the longer your hair gets the less you will let it shrink completely, so a blown-out or stretched out afro becomes the style to go to. But still it is an afro albeit a stretched out one...and as long as you don't go to sleep with it loose, I don't see a problem with wearing an afro. But I will report back when I get to WL. :look:
