For those of you done wrong by a stylist...

Did you go back and say something? Or did you say something right then?

I don't go to stylists anymore, but I was just know that if I receive bad service it just eats me up if I don't confront it.

I see so many threads here where people are upset about their hair being cut too short etc but sometimes they don't say anything. I just couldn't be that upset and no go back to the person responsible to let them get an earful.

one time I went in to get straight back cornrows (as a protective style with no tracks or anything added in, just regular cornrows on my hair) as I was transitioning. This idiot stylist put clumps and clumps of gel in my hair (which I never put normally) because she claimed my 3b/c hair could NOT be tamed... plus she said I had a "moveable" scalp and it helped her (whatever)...she put so much gel I actually started to get a headache and it was getting so thick and crunchy on my scalp (not to mention the fact she was using like 3 gels and an oil sheen spray on my hair) that it made my scalp tight.

I let her finish, went to the front to pay and the front desk woman asked me if I was satisfied (this was a chain salon, mind you) and I guess I seemed to wishy-washy... she then asked me point blank what I wasn't happy about and then I came forward and told her... the woman then came up to the desk combative as anything saying she could "do it again" but if I "said no then I can't complain." She got so belligerent and kept saying "you can't complain on me, I offered to fix it, you're walking out of here however you want, but you can't come back to complain" etc., I said to her I don't want your hands in my head, I don't need all that gel and you have no business talking to me that way since I was still paying for the services (can I even call what she did a service? lol)...

Not only did the whole damn experience just hurt my head (and was incredibly hard to wash out), I had to pay $60 bucks and got yelled at by her behind. I was much younger then, lol, but if I ended up in a situation like that again, best BELIEVE i'm complaining upfront lol.. I think that's why i'm done with salons and stylist.. some go out of their way to be ignorant...

During the time I used to go to stylists, I was too young and shy to say anything. The one time I did speak up and say my scalp was burning from relaxer cream, the stylist said "good, no you know it's working!" My mom was there as well, and agreed with the stylist!

I recently suffered tremendous heat damage by a 'natural hair stylist'. she blow dried and flat ironed my hair. I didn't notice the damage until a week later while washing my hair. Nooooo reversion. I didn't bother calling her. I'm just never going to return nor will I send her new clients. I figured, 'What is she going to do? Put some potion in my hair so I can get my kinks back? Refund me my money so that I can buy my own potion to get my kinks back?" I'm pissed as all ever but hey, what are you going to do? I just gotta pamper my hair, do treatments and pray that my hair will look decent by June when I'm to wed!!!

Maybe several different incidents where I complained each time. The bottom line was when the salon charged me an additional $10. on top of the relaxer, deep conditioner(extra $5 expected),cut , for my daughters hair because they said that they had to flat iron her hair, It was not a pretty episode, I can be a true when it comes to pissing me off, needless to say I never went back. But I will say this, as of August 2009, my daughter, my husband, and I have not been to a salon or barbershop for services. My husband became a Licensed Barber, and I researched haircare, we attend trade shows and workshops and I do everyone's hair in my household. I am thankful for LHCF, and all of the other haircare forums that I belong to, and especially to the knowledgeable ladies' here on this website. No longer dependent on any salon or stylist.

When I went to get my big chop the stylist tried to cut my hair with an electronic razor. I told her to use the scissors instead, because the razor would ruin the ends of my hair. She and another stylist tried to convince me that it didn't matter, because I was going natural. After arguing back and forth she finally got the scissors and cut my hair. I was thinking to myself, was that so hard. Stylists sometimes are so adamant about doing things their way. After that experience I promised myself that I would never go back to her again.

I should have. But just left and never returned. I complained to the corporate office and management but never confronted them. I think I'd get too emotional or upset. Besides if they're stupid enough to cut so much I doubt they're willing to listen to criticism.

As an adult, yes. A "stylist" combed through my dry natural hair using a skinny-toothed comb and dax like she was mad at it. I noticed little pieces of hair floating around my face. Said, "Whoa..." in a huh? kind of way and then turned my head to look in the mirror. When I saw that little comb and that jar of dax, I almost lost it. I started off nice, but she had an attitude and it got really heated until she realized I was leaving. My poor, scared (White) friend who knows how I am about my hair was like, "Why can't you just do what she wants? It's her hair!" with a crazy, shocked look on her face. Thank you friend, for shaming this woman into submission. She did do what I wanted and we discussed how we would move forward (which was a rhetorical conversation from my standpoint). I had to go to her recently to fix my weave cut. From

Also, when I was about 11 and grew my broken, relaxed hair out to almost shoulder length a stylist cut it into an ear length bob with arched bangs that arched with my eyebrows. She thought it was cute on Naomi. It was awful on me!

Me: yes... Nodding while crying

Note to self: never accept a surprise cut. Always leave detailed instructions with the woman who (rarely) does your children's hair. Don't ever leave. Watch them.

Well I once went to this woman on Jamaica Ave who relaxed my texlaxed hair bone straight. I told her not to comb the relaxer through, so part of my hair had like 3 inches of straight, surrounded by wavey... it was a hot effin mess. I told her right then how i felt about her, after my hair was rinsed out and shampooed/conditioned, i left.

Other than that, I've only been "done wrong" by my main stylist and it was just an unfortunate accident. I didn't say anything (mainly cuz i didn't know it happened until well after i got home) and I won't say anyting. I just wont be getting my hair straightened by anyone ever again. I will still go to him for my cuts and if I ever want to go light in color again I'll go back to him for that as well.

My goal is to be 100% hair self sufficient tho...so....

I prevented "wrong" being done to me yesterday. I went to a new salon and they immediately wanted to cut and texturize me. I was like.....NO. Just a firm no. No explaination, no long story, just NO. then they take me to the sink to start the wash and then again...another stylist comes and they try to tag team me about this darn texturizer and cut. How many freaking ways did I have to say NO? After tuning them out, they got it. No is no and that is that. Oh....and dont let me tell you guys how they tried to get me to gets a BAPS kind of hair style. I insisted on getting the style that I want since its MY HAIR and not theirs. Whatever she suggested, if I didnt like it or want it, she got shut down.

Dont let something wrong happen to you in the salon. LHCF has really helped me to stand up for myself at the salon.

Now I am anal. I have a mirror on hand during the entire session and I bring my own (bone) combs.

I didn't...sadly... I had recently moved to SC and tried a Dominican salon in Columbia (which is an hour away from where I live). I got a blowout, but the stylist used curlers and I sat under the blow dryer, THEN a handheld blow dryer, THEN a flat iron!!! I thought it would be too much, but didn't know how much damage I had suffered until my next wash! In the end, I wasn't going to drive another 2 hours to get her a piece of my mind--nor call bec I had forgotten her name! I've just decided that I'm not going to give my money to someone to do my hair--i rather mess it up myself--than I only have me to be upset with!

P.S. OP those twists are luscious!!!!

Prior to LHCF, no. LHCF has given me the umph I need to speak up for myself, mainly because I know now what's good hair practices and what's not. My last incident was breakaging during a TU as a result of stretching. I didn't realize it had happened until I was home. I called back and discussed my frustrations. I, much like Whimsy, is aiming to be self sufficient.

when i was still relaxed this lady i knew cut my hair into a angular bob with the back tapered & i had bangs...it was the best cut i ever had...i went to her every couple weeks for a wash/wrap and flat-iron (with the marcel stove flatiron)...so one time i went and she knew i had an event to go to in a few weeks and while she was doing my hair she asked did i like flips, and im like "ummm yeah sometimes?" & she was like "maybe we'll try that next time" & i didnt say anything...so ffwd 3 weeks later when im going out of town the next day, i went to her house after class so it was like 3:30...it was like 4 people ahead of me so she didnt get to me until late...1st off this was the 1st time she relaxed my hair (when i first got the cut my mom relaxed me and the lady just washed and cut & styled)...my head was :burning: ...then i wasnt looking in the mirror while she was flatironing, but she kept spraying pump it up spritz on my hair which kept touching my sore scalp and :burning: more ...then she started touched up the back with the clippers so im thinking this is gonna be my regular style...this lady put flip curls in my hair...and it wasnt like flip curls all over it was like a high spritzed up bump then it was all flat until you got to my nape then the ends were flipped up, still with the shaved back, and i had bangs that she slicked down...it was sooo horrible and i have an big oval head so it was just made worse...idk if she did it half arsed b/c she was tired or what...but i really wanted to cry... it was like 11:30 and i had to go out of town the next morning and i didnt want her to start over, plus i knew her and i didnt want drama w/ someone that i see on a fairly regular basis...so i went home and combed out the style and then flatironed it (over spritz and all that instead of washing) and wrapped it...the next day my hair was semi-decent but it was gonna be the 1st time alot of ppl seen my "fierce" cut and it wasnt lookin fierce at all...it was dull from the spritz and it had almost no swang...this lady that was at the shop with me the day b4 seen my hair and was just staring at it cuz it really didnt look like i spent all day at a shop...it was a 2day event so that night i had my mom wash and flatiron/curl it and it looked sooo good...i got so many compliments...i was mad i paid the other lady like 80 for a jacked up style when my mom did it way better for free.99...needless to say i NEVER went back to her after that

Ha, no! I can just imagine my sister's stank face if I told her that I looked like Regina King. Strangely, her facial reaction came to mind first. But maybe I do a little in camera phone pictures, especially the no make-up one when I'd just woken up.

I think it really depends on the service and how obvious it is before you leave the shop. Prior to yesterday, my last two services were an ok experience in the shop. However, it was once I got home that I realized the extent of the poor service. I did not call her out.

For this particular shop and stylist, I think it hurt more that, as a long time client (more than 10 years), I stopped going. She was trying to open her own shop right around the downturn of the economy when retaining clients was very important.
