I pointed to waist and told my stylist " I want my hair this long" She smirked and replied " your hair will never get that long"

I was disheartened a little..but remembered that their is a misperception among stylist and people in general about black women and hair growth.

Then i decided to see who else thought this...I turned to male friend #1 " do you think i can grow my hair this long" ..." Probably not" he replied

i asked two more people and they both shot me down clear outta of the blue sky from my waist length mission. ( I'm currently bsl)

But guess what folks, they dont know I got LHCF, a killer regimen, quality staple products, and a serious determination to shine some light of the misperception about our ability to grow hair!

At first i just wanted to have long sexy hair, now this has become more of a movement! a statement to society! I need some support up in this mothalova...who is with me?:boxing:

I am right there with you - waist length before I think about what's going to happen next - I am so right there.

The doubters and naysayers will have to eat their words when I flip my hair in their faces.

I have a few doubters in my life - I mostly ignore them. I know what I'm doing thanks to LHCF and I have all of the support I need from you ladies here and my DH.

I pretty much keep my hair goals to myself too. Everynow and then, I wear my hair out, and people are stunned at how much it's grown.... I've gotten some hate from some of the most unexpected people though....and gotten love from some of the least expected people! My stylist thinks I can grow my hair to my waist....but I don't think she wants me to. I just can't wait to get there.....:drunk:

When I started out (APL) I only told my family that my goal was WL. My Mom was like :ohwell: and my sister was like :lachen: . Now that I am MBL, they are all consulting with me about their hair!! And now when I tell them my new goal is Hip Length, everyone believes me.
So just let your hair speak for itself. You will definitely reach WL and once you do, no one will be able to say anything.

I realized that when it's a black woman with THAT length of hair some ppl automatically assume that she gotta be mixed with SOMETHING. Cus it's just impossible for a black woman to have long, beautiful naturally grown hair....

Anyhoo.... Ooo your stylist is gonna be hating everytime you come and sit in her chair; once she sees your progress. :lachen:

Watcha back. :look: And hair.

The fact that your hair is already at BSL is testament to the fact that black hair grows and YOUR hair grows! People are haters. Keep doing you! It may be prudent not to share with others your goals. Sadly the people we love the most can be the most discouraging, even when they don't mean to be. ;)

Honey, I'm right on board with ya. Ever since I was told my hair would never reach WL, I set out on a strong mission to prove all the naysayers wrong. First it was BSL, and now I'm about 2 inches from WL. As soon as I reach WL (I pray to God that I do), I'm going to remind everyone who doubted me that where there's a will, there's a way, and that above anything, faith can achieve miracles!! If I can't achieve WL, then I'm a logical and rational person, so I'll just accept the fact that my growing cycle has reached it's potential peak and that I am done. Whatever length it is, I'll embrace it because it's beautiful, it is a gift from God, and it's all mine!!!

Wait, you're already BSL yet people are shooting down your waist length goal? :perplexed I mean, your hair is already long, why would they doubt at this point that it can get any longer. Ignore them, clearly they know nothing. Thats including your stylist. You may want to watch her as you get closer to your goal.

This is why I never shared my hair goals with people when I was stuck at sl for 50-11 years. People would say I didn't have the right kind of hair like my aunt and cousins for growing it long and that if it'd never been long then it'd never be long. But now that its long the bs people spout has changed and folks wanna know if I'm just going to let it keep growing, tell me I need to get a cut and style, that I shouldn't let it get too long... blah, blah, blah

I too haven't shared my hair goals with anyone. People are either discouraging or they just act "funny". So I just keep growing my hair and when people comment on how long it's getting, I just say "yeah, that's because I stopped using heat on it". Then they're like "ohhhh", and I just leave it at that. I can't wait to get to WL though. :yep:

lilamae,

Those folks that said 'your hair will never get that long' have probably never seen waist length hair (REAL) on a black female. Keep up with your good hair care, and you'll show them. :yep:

I'm most definitely with you on this.
Girl, when your hair gets that long though, don't go near your stylist... she might try to start chopping.

Well I don't tell people my goals.....except my husband and he went and told his friends....and now I feel like I have too put my all into it(motivation) and now I'm on here obsessing everyday. But he was always supportive he told me when we were dating that he thinks I should grow my hair down my back and he said if he didn't think I could do it he would have never said that.I think he told his friends that to brag now that he knows I'm for real about it and gave up the scissors. If it discourages you alot don't tell anyone else and do this for you. You can make it to w l girl.

Oh hell no.. I'm with you girl. Like the others said, let your hair speak for yourself. I have nay sayers in my life also. I heard them talking behind my back one day making fun of how I'm proud of how my hair is now at shoulder length. They were snickering and what not. Keep in mind their hair is bearly touchin their shoulders, and its dry and broken off. So anyway last week it was time for me to flat iron my hair because it had been six months since I straitend my hair. So I flat iron my hair and they both had these stupid looks on their faces. And they looked nervous because my hair really is getting longer. Needless to say, I'm now letting my hair speak for itself. You see I can understand to a certain exctent when it comes from a place of ignorance because it is not fully their fault. Some people don't know any better because they don't know what we know. You see I just have a proplem with people who just plain don't want you to grow your hair out. Thoes are the real haters........

When somebody tells me I "CAN'T" that's all the motivation I need to prove them wrong!! You can and will get waist length hair. I can't wait until your stylist's chin hits the floor.

See, this is the type of stuff that would stop some folks in their tracks. You gotta "shake them haters off" not just with your hair goals, but in all that you do. You should hide your hair for a while and then just whip it out on 'em like "You don't know me punk!!!":lachen:

LOL!!!!!!!!!!:lachen:

Lilamae, there are lots or people who speak from their ignorance or lack of faith everytime they open their mouths. They tend NOT to be humble, though, and admit when they're wrong. I would start now to seek a stylist who is supportive of you growing your hair to WL, because your current stylist may deliberately sabotage your progress....know what I mean???

I remember the "trust me", right before that....that....human female cut my BSL hair up to my shoulders a few years ago. Don't let that happen to you, ya hear!?

That is messed up because I had the opposite experience this weekend with my beautician. She was flat ironing my hair and said "Q I bet you could grow your hair all the way to your butt if you wanted". I told her that was my ultimate goal and I wanted to get there by next year. She said "I think you will do it too". Just like the others said, the proof will be when your hair is actually that length then you can walk around like Kanye "uh unh you can't tell me nothing"!!! Q

Thanks Q. That's funny cuz that's one of my favorite songs. But yes it must be nice to have a stylist who is in full support your hair goals!

Thanks Moroni. Awesome advice. The only issue is that my stylist is also my best friend! I have been doing my hair more at home though.

The haters are off the hook. I know we will reach our goals and there's is no better revenge than the yt girl toss. ;)

A lot of people talk foolishness because they know no better but a lot more people try to speak defeat into other people's heads because they don't want others to achieve what they haven't achieved. I don't know which category your stylist belongs in but I'd say be careful about letting someone who isn't supportive of your hair goals get near your hair. I've found that a lot of black people are jealous of other black people who can grow long hair, so your stylist might actually not want you to get as far as waist-length.

You are right. This is a movement of sorts. I believe we are all here to prove society wrong to some degree. I am with you 100%.

Ignore that crazy lady and please please plezse be careful when it does get that long. She may trim you back to SL saying your ends are damaged or some stupid mess.:perplexed
