Man after i see how men dog out women and talk about women that look like "Aunt Jemima" in scarves i wont dare do it.lol Even if they didn't I ALWAYS care what others think and try my best not to come off in a negative way to others. But u ladies say u make it a fashion statement I would love to see it because i can't pull it off and i have never seen ANY lady pull it off without looking like she just rolled out of bed.

Sorry you feel this way (bolded). I know you've heard it said "you can't please all of the people all of the time."

I love scarves as accessories and wear them all the time. I also get compliments from men and women. As a matter of fact friends and family give nice silk/designer scarves to me often as gifts. My DH even had some sent to me when he was deployed. Love Love Love them.

Surely there are more pressing things to worry about than how subpar women with scarves will end up looking in public. I know we're talking about bonnets, etc. too and it doesn't always look fashionable like these ^ pictures, but anything can look good or bad (or sometimes somebody can look bad for a second but they don't care because they know what it is or they have something more pressing going on in life--so who am I to care?), so, really que sera sera.

I remember when i used to visit JA when i was younger, alot of women used to wear shower caps out and about....they were baggying all day, everday and had some nice hair.
Don't see it these days though.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Not scarves that are meant to be worn as fashion, but straight up satin bonnets that you sleep in. Chicks are dressed up casual or in their skankiest and they have that bonnet on as if it's a wig or something.

BWAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAA:lachen: thank goodness this is no longer a common practice, to tell u the truth I dont see many womwn out in roller either ... reason being more women wearing weaves and braids IMO

but funny story ... Iwas at home baggying my hair (had it on the whole day) So anyways I had to run down to the supermarket and grabbed on some clothes to go. On my way to the car I saw my male neighbour (who's rlly hunky) and I put on my sweetest smile and waved to him. I had noticed that he was rlly staring at me and I was like  hehe its because I look all cute 'n stuff ..... only to realize when I saw my reflection as I was was aproaching my car that I still had on my plastic cap:lachen::lachen:

^^^ Yep, going back to Jackie-O and even beyond, a scarf can look classy on a lady. It's the other stuff that I don't care for.

Scarves at fine by me and I definitely rock them while out. If done properly, it's a fashion statement. Bonnets for public wear are no go for me.

Please! The whole point of that Jackie O-type scarf is to cover giant rollers, or rebellious hair on those days when it just has to GO BIG! Throw on some bug-eye shades and dare anyone to call you Aunt Jemima!

Thank you was not enough! InchHighPrivateEye, I was beginning to think I'm in the twilight zone. Or do scarves get a pass if we call them "headwraps"?

I imagine some of you would be gagging if you were at this fashion show.

I say live and let live. Those of us wearing scarves don't really care what the rest of you think. LOL

I bought a couple of scarves after i saw a thread Nonie had on turbans and headscarves. She has skills, some of the ways she tied her scarves were so beautiful. I wear a cute scarf or i throw on a shower cap and put a cute beanie on top- no-one can tell i'm baggying underneath.

Hope Nonie won't mind me posting one of her pics

I think its inappropriate to wear them out and it looks tacky and/or ghetto. Don't jump on me b/c you know you're thinking the same thing. It doesn't look right to see a grown person in pajamas at a public store. The same goes for these night scarves, etc. Now the black wrap w/the built in bun (or u can make one) in the back is alot better, women who wish to scarve in public should invest in one of these.

i love scarves and always had. I wrap my head, wear them as headbands, wrap (smaller ones) around buns, sometimes dc underneath when running quick errands. I wish i had more of em.

I dont have a problem with silk or satin head scarves in public. I do it when I feel I need to (I usually pick one that matches though). We all have our own standards, but I would rather put on a head scarf than to go out with my head loooking crazy. I actually think some scarves look very pretty, beautiful color or print. And I don't really pay close attention to other people wearing scarves or head bonnets. They probably have a good reason or just their own reason...

I just dont care that much what other people think. They look at u for a couple seconds then go about their biz. Im not taking down a good wrap just to go to the corner store or subway shop. The public is just gonna have to deal with my wrap scarf...pincurls...or exposed silk wrap with bobby pins. I dont do that bonnet tho.

OMG, I'm at work and I just went to the drive-thru to help a customer with a transaction and guess what she has on her head, a RED wrap thingie. I can't think of the name of it but you know how you wrap your hair around and then wrap that thing around it with the velcro to secure it. It would be no big deal but RED stands out. I've worn my hair wrapped around and secured with bobby pins and I don't see anything wrong with that. When the "wrap" first came out that's how it was worn and everybody used to where it that way as a style. Now it's only worn around the house or at bedtime.

I've been known to sport mine ala Jackie O style, with a pair of sunglasses, lip gloss and a cute outfit...this is my go to look whenever I drive with the top down to keep my hair from being all over the place. Frankly, I think I look kinda fly.

I actually did this last night. I am muslim and was on my way to a party. My hijab(scarf) would have smushed my hair and I would have sweat out my press, so I put rollers in my hair and my hijab on top. I did look like the bride of frankenstein, but didn't get many stares. My overgarment was raggedy too, but I knew underneath I was fly,so it really didn't bother me going out like that.

Im still not seeing the issue. Most of the time my hair is longer/healthier than the people that look at me crazy anyway. Lol

Nonie, you know I love your scarves, specially that picture with the scarf under the hat, so fly! But I don't think people here are talking about those scarves or headwraps, but more about the ones that are sold at BSS for lounging or going to bed, or the bonnets for sleeping or the shower bonnets. It used to bother me to see other women out like that, but the older I get the less I care and the more passes people get from me,live and let live! Now, rollers out in public it's like I hear my mother's voice in my head saying NOOOOO (That and flip flops)

A silk vibrant scarf is a thing of beauty and you and other ladies wear it very well. In fact, you inspired me to wear an emerald green one to a party recently and I received a lot of compliments ( I matched my eye makeup to my scarf and did a smokey green eye).

@danysedai, thanks for answering the question "What sort of scarves are y'all talmbout?" The crickets after @InchHighPrivateEye and I posted images of what we had in mind sort of led me to think that even those are a no-no for some. Pfft...
Anyway, I think I can make a doo-rag look hawt too. For all I know those catwalk models in black head gear might be wearing doo-rags. :lachen:

Ironically, I have a very pretty scarf that I've own over my shoulder to add oomph to a rather drab suit and everyone who saw it loved it and some thought I paid crazy money for it. (I got it from my mom so I dunno.) What no one knew is I have used the same scarf to tie my head before bed Aunt Jemima style. So while I do now know the crazy scarves you are all talmbout, my own collection has no restricted use. I do invest in scarves I can wear outside and sometimes they do double as lounge wear or bed scarves if my hair is straightened so *shrug*. My usual head gear for bed is a baggy.

Girl, please. I'm too grown to worry about what anyone thinks. Mind you, I'm never going anywhere looking too crazy so, if I'm straight with it, it's cool. That said, as long as the scarf is clean and in good condition, I can make it work. *snaps*

There's a world of difference between the $3.99 BSS night scarf and a scarf that is clearly meant to be worn as an accessory. They are usually made of better quality fabric and can be tied a number of different ways. Now bonnets are a no go. I wish somebody would say something about my scarf.

I'd rather see that than the rollers, jacked up hair, or hair under construction that it's covering up.

Oh hell I will wear a scarf outside any day and anytime please
It's so funny but a lady is sitting down in front of me with her bonnet on she tilted it to the side to look like a cute hat lmao
