***writing this before class****

1. I've never had long healthy hair.
2. I'm a perfectionist
3. My motto is low-maintenance cute:

I'll explain more after class. Please, do provide feedback for me to read when I return

1 (but I did have long healthy hair when I was a little girl - I want it in my adult years too) And I refuse to believe "our" hair can't grow long and healthy.

1. Because I'm amazed at the destruction of all these lifetime built myths about black women's hair.
2. I want long hair. Really really really bad.

I've had medium length hair most of my life but I didn't really take care of it back then. It's almost like a hobby and I actually like taking care of my hair. It's kind of fun to watch it grow. I also happen to like long hair on almost everyone.

1. B/c it's fun and I like doing things where I can see tangible results
2. B/c I know that growing my hair long will not save the world, but it will make me happy. And it's one of the only things I do JUST FOR ME.
3. B/c all the haircare info. I read is interesting to me, (And this forum is one of THE BEST forums of any kind that I have ever seen. It's informative, user-friendly, and I appreciate the moderators and administrators here making it a safe, enjoyable place for everyone to be.)
4. B/c when I think about my hair, I get in "the hair zone" and forget any other worries, concerns, or stresses.

Because it broke off really badly when I was a child but thank God for restoration !

now I am obsessed with taking care of it.

1 Because I think long healthy hair can be so sexy
2 Because I had suffered many years of jacked up hair that I thought could not grow
3 Because of believing my hair would not grow, I resorted to a few years of wearing weaves and finally decided I was tired of spending a fortune to have hair sewn in when I could possibly grow my own. The results would not be as instantaneous, however I would be proud of my accomplishment.
4 Because I am a non biracial black woman I want to show that I too can grow long hair. (Most people tend to believe that you have to be "mixed" to have long hair"

I've never had hair this length before, so for me it is quite achievement especially having 4a/4b hair type.

1. because I KNOW I have really beautiful thick hair under all the damage I have inadvertantly subjected my hair to in the past. I know this because whenever I leave my hair in braids for a few months to years I have really thick and beautiful hair which quickly fall off once I relax it (over processing, damaging regimines) I know I have beautiful hair and I am determined to uncover it!

2. because I think long hair is beautiful and I want the choice of having short or long hair because I choose to not because I can't have it.

Because my family is FULL of people with loong hair- in fact all my immediate cousins had hair from mid-back to waist length. Everytime I was with them in the early years, others made me feel like i didn't belong in the family because my hair wasn't as "good" nor was it even long. In fact, I remember this one incident where me and 3 of my cousins were at this lady's house- i don't remember what reason- and she was like, 'gee, I don't know what it is with yall family- everyone just has long beautiful hair!' And then she glanced at me and she didn't say anything, but her look was like, well except you...
crazy.gif

Another time, 3 of us were with my uncle and a friend of his came up to the car (we were in) and gushed " HEY GORGEOUS!!!" to one cousin, then "HI BEAUUUUUTIFULLL!!!!" to another, then last and least, turned to me and less enthusiastically and less genuinely, said "Hi Pretty!"
I just always felt like an ugly duckling in comparison to my cousins- it was 2 in particular that i was always around and they both had waist-length Type 2 hair. Everyone treated them differently and wanted to show them off and wanted them to visit them etc. Keep in mind this was early years, from like when we were 4 to like, 12 (the 3 of us are about the same age).
Sorry about the long story.
Point is, I just want to grow my hair out...i suppose it's kind of sad and not the greatest reason, but to feel more part of the family
crazy.gif
. Besides, about 5 years ago (I was about 17) one of those cousins, after I mentioned a length I intended to grow my hair, told me my hair couldn't grow that long if I tried for 80 years. She figured my hair was too 'nappy'.
I'll show her!! I just started the long hair challenge in February, so I'm giving myself about 2-3 years to reach my goals...

1 - It keeps me from obsessing about more detrimental things.

2 - It's the one hairstyle that I haven't tried yet.

3 - It's educational.

4 - I don't date anymore so what else is there to do but pamper my hair every weekend?

5 - It's fun!

1. I've always had reddish brown thick shoulder to almost midback hair and I love it.
2. Without my hair & with my face shape I look horrible.
3. I love it when it smells good, is shiny, bouncy & soft.
4. I love the fact that when I take my time when styling my hair, people assume I've been to the salon.

I never had long hair b4, so I'm determined to have long hair. Just as one of the other ladies stated, past issues from childhood has me hell-bent on growing out my hair.

I think long hair is flattering on me. My sister is always making stupid comments abotu my hair length, too, ever since I cut it off. She would tell me that my hair will never be as long as hers. My mom just told me she cut it above her shoulders so right now I'm already ahead of her by probably 6 or so inches, but when I see her again, I want her to be blown away.

I'm just obsessed with hair period. I think it's a disease.

Right now, I want to cut my hair, so I'm no longer obsessed with having and keeping long hair. I think I'm improving!

Because I've never had long hair.
Because I was taught so many bad hair things, I want to see what good techniques can do.
Because a lot of people think that if you're not mixed you can't have long hair.
Because I think it flatters my face and head shape.

Lovely responses everyone. Let me tell you what sparked this question.

#1, I'm a scientist at heart w/ almost everything I do. I love testing things, observing cause and effects, and simply just trying to make things better. Hence, my hair experiments.

Now, as far as styles are concerned, I've always been a perfectionist in making sure my hair looks neat. However, this is the first time that I have actually been obsessed w/ the health of my hair....why?...because I didn't know any better before.

Since I did not grow up with long hair, it has always been my "project", if you will, to correct the health of my hair.

My mom noticed this from jump-start because she lives with me. I have a old high-school friend who recently was resurrected as a best gal pal. Both of us share, among other things, hair thoughts.

Well, after sharing a hair story/experiment with her last night, her feedback was that it was confirmed that I was obsessed w/ my hair. So, that's best gal pal and mom w/ the confirmations.

No, I didn't get defensive...
smile.gif
because I finally agree. The only question was whether I could give myself a logical reason as to why I was obsessed....and I can.

This is my ultimate goal ya'll:

Functional hair! I don't just want hair that looks good. I want hair that I can do things with. I want hair that will give me options. And I'm not just talking about styles....

-I want to pull my hair back in a simple bun at my will knowing that it still looks good.

-I want to unravel that same bun 30min later if I want knowing that it still looks good.

-I want hair that'll keep my head warm

-I want hair that will cover my boobies if needed

-I want to be able to style my hair in simple styles where the true beauty is in the health of my hair rather than the style itself.

call me optimistic....call me cocky....but you will call me satisfied when I get there....because I will!

I have always had good thick well past my shoulders hair. Men considered it long, women medium. I want to take it over the top. I washed and condition but I didn't take care of ends or trim. I am fine tuning myself right now. Hair, like i think soslychic said, takes me to another zone. It definitly adds to my beauty.

LOL! I never thought of hair as a booby cover. Good one.

1. I love long hair that flows in the hair.
2. My hair used to be very strong and I will love the lenght and strenght back when I was younger.
3. Long hair is beautiful.

Funny u should ask this question, cuz I was thinking about this the other day....

Prior to finding hair boards, I didn't give a crap about my hair (let alone obsessive)....yet it was still long & rather healthy. After finding hair boards, I began appreciating my hair & taking steps to enhance it's health & length.... but not obsessing over it.

Now that I'm transitioning, I'M TOTALLY OBSESSED with my hair!!! WHY?? Cuz my natural hair is my rare jewel... I haven't seen it (lengthy) in a very long time....it's so incredibly precious & beautiful to me. I'll sit & nurture it (scalp massages) for hrs at a time

EDITED TO ADD:

How many inches of natural hair do you have mow, Peachtree? I have about 1.25-1.5 depending on the area on my head. I'm still holding on. No perms.

well said krystle.

I had bad experience with a weave style and my hair came
out very badly in the crown area with bald spots.

This is when I became obsessed with my hair and started taking care of my hair which has grown back
and is the longest length I've had in years.
