Where I come from it is odd to see a Black women with short hair. Whether if she is from the north or the south. Whether 10z or 1a. Even the girls with the most Afro-textured hair grew it long or kept it short by choice. It is so sad that there are prevailing stereotypes and preconceived notions about Black women and our hair.

But yet. I see Paris Hilton wearing weaves and extensions all the time My BFF in LA goes to the SAME Black salon where they Kardashian sisters go and get there extra hair put in to have the illusion of long flowing thick locks

And Jessica Simpson has her own line of phony ponies and buns that she is selling. I know a white woman at works who spends all day at the salon where she goes and gets a full sewn in weave braided and sew in because she only has 3 strands of hair and the hair that she has is limp, dull and lifeless from a life time of perms and overly blonde dyes. Other races have just a much issues with their hair and believe me they are not all walking around with long flowing locks at lot of that is "Enhanced" also. But this same woman is always up in my business and the other black girls at work that have long hair. She is always telling me I should cut my hair because>

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Black women with the cute short afros.

I tell her No you just can't stand to see Black women with more hair than you. Don't play with me.

Other people need to stay out of our hair business in the first place and black men who have these notions need to get a grip
say it again say it again. I agree with this entire post!!!

Did you really say this to her? What was her response?

i think we would be lying to ourselves if we found it so hard to believe that ppl feel this way. I can totally 100% understand why ppl would think we couldn't grow hair. Number 1 reason being most of the black women i have seen in my life who had long hair..were of mixed race. Number 2 most races don't have to go through all of this..co-washing,henna,deep conditioning, horse product using to gain or keep an inch. So are they realllllly lying when they say we can't grow hair? When it's so effortless for them to grow hair..if i were them, i would feel the same way.

Thanks for saying this! I've been meaning to start a thread on this very topic for over a month and I keep forgetting to.

They have actually come out and said it? I guess that's the part I am having a hard time fathoming. How does this kind of comment work it's way into a conversation?

For me, non-blacks that make such comments were close to me. For example, when I bc'd my Honduran ex-boyfriend thought my hair was going to stay short like my neighbor who likes to keep her TWA buzzed. When he saw me months later and my hair was longer, he was pleased but a little shock (I saw it in his face).

When I was in junior high, my Asian friends wanted to know why my hair was different from other black girls. I did not completely understand them and told them my hair was the same. They said no and they pulled the piece of my hair from the crown section straight up and it fell back in place. They said see. I was like huh. They said they did that to some other black girl and her hair stayed sticking straight up. Later I realized they did not understand why I had "mixed" hair but was dark like a "full" black.

I believe it is effortless for AA to grow our hair. Since it grows without us really having to do anything to it. The issue is retaining length considering our hair is the most dry and fragile out of all. You can literally wash, condition and leave your hair in a bun for a couple of years without ever doing anything else to it and your hair will be long. That's the mindset we have to change is that our hair has a hard time growing. That's not the issue at all. And truth me told there are people with so say "good" hair that could use the methods here and benefit. It's not an AA thing it's a healthy hair thing.

I have been around people who thought black women couldn't grow their hair. But in my family the women that DECIDED to grow their hair long; is anywhere between SL to WL. So that mentality was never apart of my family.

The few people in my acquitance who thought that were black and that was when I was a teenager.

I don't think nappy hair can grow long or long as other races. On Average, I believe it can only grow to shoulder length and to black people's standard that's LONG.

Apart from that, I did have a hispanic ask me can I grow my hair long and she demonstrated by pointing to her butt. I also heard two girls one day on the bus saying that dark, dark women have short nappy hair and light skin women have long hair. People make these judgments based on what they see and their daily life experience. So, if people think black women can't grow long hair that is because their daily life experience give them testimony to their belief.

I'm in my thirties and I'm still waiting to see an abundant of black women with nappy hair grow their hair as long as other races. On average, I see nothing but chin length, neck length, and in some cases shoulder length.

Cocobunny,

Because they haven't said anything doesn't mean they don't think it. They may simply just assume as to the reason why they don't ask.

Sometimes they may simply compliment your hair and then maybe you may say, phew! it took while to get my curls in and they may ask..Is all that yours? That is *a* way the conversation may come up.

Many may assume that we can't grow hair because of the images presented to them, esp. of African women who actually ,may shave their hair (we're talkin' the Nat'l Geo scenes) And then you have pictures of slaves also with hair shaven by the captors. (Many before slavery had longer hair lengths and the women's hair shaved prior to being sold.)

So combine the two with these images, feed it to the world, along with updated images of busted haired black women who also believe the bull and defeat themselves by not growing hair because of the lack of education.

Now you have a myth flowing about.....
**************

I will be discussing this myth and the image of black women on my new blog: Daughter of the First in the near future so stay tuned.

I know you're still a newbie but do you really still believe this after being on this site? What about all the type 4's on this site that are BSL and beyond?

All races need conditioner! YOu must not realize they are number one for spending their lung money to be blonde or a red head! and Yes they get straw like hair and frizzy damaged hair from Chemicals and yes they PERM their hair, which we relax, and yes They deep condition their hair.

So sad you feel that way about AA women. :nono:

My sister who we share a different mother is black 100% and her hair is thick and down her back, at the moment longer than mine, Her mom, to her waist, her niece to her waist, so I don't believe black women can't have long hair.

The people with the biggest hang ups on our hair are us. If we stopped the negative self talk, it wouldn't really matter what anyone else has to say.

Have you seen Sera's hair and Sonce's and Mdwezi (sp) and quite a few others?

i hear that "black women cant grow long hair unless they're mixed" primarily from black women irl. i think its sad actually. especially when i see so many type 4 hairs bsl and beyond on here and other hair sites. i've given up on educating the locals... i'm burnt out on that. if those heifers want to believe their hair cant grow, let them. that leaves more room for me to swing my mine! lol

I think she means in real life.

I've seen a lot of AA women with beautiful natural hair, but I haven't seen an abundance of women with natural hair that is BSL or longer. BUT, I may see this more often than I think, and just not realize it due to shrinkage, or the women may have had natural hair (straightened) and I just thought it was relaxed.

Growing up, I mostly saw black women with shoulder-length hair and weaves.

Sorry, but the pics don't account for 1% of the population and those who can grow their hair MBL or waist length have a softer texture.

I haven't seen any type 4 BSL and beyond. I see a lot of people who texture appears softer and looser than type 4 that grows BSL and beyond. This site doesn't account for 1% of the black population. If I see most black women or even the majority walking around with BSL and beyond in the real world then I will change my mind. To answer your question, even after being on this site and seeing so-called "evidence" or "testimonies" that black women can grow LONG hair, I still believe they can't. If shoulder length hair is black people's standard for Long then I guess they can.

I have seen a few and the majority look like they have a looser, softer texture than the typical nappy head. I'm waiting to witness in real life what I see on the internet.

Then why are you even here?

Do you have type 4 hair?

If so, wouldn't visiting this site so often be a waste of your time?

Visiting this site often is not a waste of time. It's a useful tool to get into black women thoughts and opinions. The task can be difficult because you can't always discern lie from truth on the internet. But there are a lot of sponsors from salons, magazines, advertisement agencies, manufacturers, and business people and organizations that frequent this site and even have their own task force post on here. Trust me, you people don't know who is who on this site.

Curiosity.

Alright. That did made me chuckle for some reason.

Weird/unexpected answer though, but yeah. Cool beans.

I disagree with you on most key points in this discussion... but we are all free to think what we want.

Good luck with your observations.

Good luck with your research :yep:

I have thought about that more than once. Pretty sure all types of people see this site.

Most people that actually post in the hair section want to learn about hair and grow it out though... I would think. That's why I'm thrown off.
