I'm wondering if i should just stop my hair care journey for long thick hair now because my mother has very thin see thur hair and her hair has never been long in her life. my fathers side of the family i'm not really sure what there hair does, but i've never seen any of them with really long thick hair and when i was a little girl i never had long thick hair like most ppl here say. so im thinkin to myself why should i waste all my time and money and effort trying to grow long hair if it's not in my makeup. i saw a member on here with thin hair she cut it all off and when it grew back it was still stringy and thin...i've cut my hair in a short bob so many times just to make it grow thicker and even and it never does. I don't know what to think...if i'm going to be in weaves and wigs anyway than i might as will just learned to except that than to get my hopes up and think i can be like ppl who have this beautiful long thick hair...am i wrong to speak so much doubt or should i just except reality

i don't want to have these hair demons anymore...i want to love and accept myself and i'm just tried of stressin about this

What's your regimen? You can definitely overcome the family hair trait. My hair was thinning like crazy at the edges. I'm working on it to overcome it. The point is you have your own hair and your own unique genetic makeup. I feel, through perseverance, diligence and attention you can overcome thinning and grow a healthy long head of hair. I no longer believe in "family curses". THE Point is......do your own thing!

don't give up! On my dad's side of the family, No one has hair longer than collar bone length, and on my mom's there's a lady iwth classic length hair but she's a very distant relaitve, so even though long hair isn't prevelant in my family, I'm proof that we can grow our hair. It's just a matter of finding the right hair routine, and moisturizing products.

i cw 2x a week, avc washing, protective styles...i strenched, i did everthing said to do...

I understand. My mother has thin hair and non of her sisters have really long thick hair either and the same goes for my father side of the family. But that does not mean you can't have thick hair at least medium to thick hair. I have somewhat in between medium to thick hair. So you don't have to be just like everyone in your family.

I think you can increase the appearance of thickness in your hair with regular protein treatments. If they are too drying on your hair I think there are natural alternatives like henna. You can also choose styles that increase the appearance of volume like rollersets. Don't give up on caring for your hair, I think you can have a nice head of hair as long as your health is good.

Just wondering...how do those family members care for their hair? HOw long have you been trying to grow your hair out?

There are ways to make thin hair appear thicker--texlaxing has made my hair appear much thicker than it is.

Don't get discouraged. Yes, this is a journey, but well worth it. When I started I often wondered if any of this was paying off, and I was surprised to see my growth in just a few short months.

I know it's hard, but be patient. Break the mold with your hair. It can be done!

It sounds like you're taking good care of your hair...it just takes time.

You may want to add something like castor oil to your routine...it's a great hair thickner, it's working for me!

I have five sisters and we all have a different head of hair, and I can say that maybe one or two of us have hair like my mother. I think your hair thickness is genetic, but you can reach your potential maximum thickness and length from a sound hair care regimen, like some of the lovely ladies on the board. How often do you relax your hair? How often do you deep condition?

I agree with the other ladies, just because no one else in your family has long hair doesn't mean you can't. If all the women on your mother's side have the same hair care regimine and don't take care of their hair, then they won't have longer hair. Same for your father's side. Most familes eat the same, take care of their hair the same because it's something that's been passed down from generation to generation. You can change that. My Grandmother has male pattern baldness and I see my hairlines receding but I'm gonna fight with all that's in me not to have the same thing happen to me. It your choice but in my opinion it's worth at least trying.

The point is you are not your mother or those other people in your family. You have the ability to achieve any goal you desire, including long, thick hair if that's what you want.

Stop comparing yourself to other people, including those in your family. The suggestions given in the posts here to increase your hair's thickness and health are very good ones. :yep:

Well... you say you're tired of stressing about it. How long have you been "stressing" about it? It looks like you joined the board in November, so I'll assume that's when you started your haircare journey. (until you tell me differently) That would mean you've been at this for 2-3 months, which ain't long, girl! Patience! You cannot grow weary in this thing or you will give up. 2-3 months is not a long time to expect dramatic results, especially if your haircare practices before were the complete opposite of what they are now. If you were not taking good care of your hair before, you're going to have to remember that the "abused" hair is still on your head. It's not going to go from left to right overnight. You might even end up having to get rid of some of it to eventually get what you really want.

Now, with all that said my hair is longer than my mother's hair has ever been. My hair is also longer than all of the women's hair in my dad's family.

So, throw in the towel and be looking back 5 years from now saying "I wish I'd stuck with it." Or... DO stick with it and in 5 years be proud of your hard work and enjoy the gorgeous, healthy hair that will come from your persistence.

I have to agree with her. Please dont give up. I think that you will not be very happy with yourself if you dont continue on your journey. My mother has very thin hair, she is 65 and now wears wigs. I have noticed my hair thinning recently and of course I wonder if i'm destined to wear wigs. But I tell you what, I will not go down fighting. :D

I'm pretty much convinced that nearly everyone can have a full head of healthy hair if they take care of it.

How long it will ultimately get, I suppose, is genetically predisposed but with diligence and tlc I believe you can have the head of hair you want.
