I had to go out and get this cause my bun was looking a raggedy mess. IT WORKS! It holds, but its not hard and crusty and I have 2 months worth of new growth working! LOVE IT!:yay:

Great!!! I'm on like my 5th jar....in the winter months I wore my hair pulled back a lot, but this summer I'm wearing it out more so I'll slow down on usage. This is one of few products that I don't sway away from when it comes to smoothing my hair back. It's proved the test of time. I LOVE it and have no need to try any other :)

The best gel for slicked back styles like buns in my opinion is Fantasia Thick N' Shine. It is a "brown" gel, but I think this out shines your ordinary brown styling gel. I go through jars and jars of this stuff with no adverse effect and use on my slicked back low pony puffs.

This is my favorite gel too works great.
I notice we use a lot of the same products, you must be my natural hair twin.

Fantasia IC (the Blue one) for Color Treated Hair. Their gels are awesome. I was using Ampro, but that stuff started to flake. I swithced to Fantasia IC, and I love it now!

Let's Jam has never let me down, and I've been using it for at least 5 years. I use the one with the green top.

Hard to hold? Is this the pink/red one?

I use Fantasia IC Gel High POtency (the blue one) for Color Treated hair. I use it on my curly days with some CP...I've also used it on my blow out days, with some Abba Nourishing Leave-IN.

I dunno. Brown gels give me nightmares after all those ghetto days of using ProStyle gel. HAHA...I'm prejudice. I see 14 year olds with their hair slicked back so tight from the prostyles, it makes my eyes squint just thinking about it.

I'm a little scurred...

I actually like prostyle, i just bought it the other day. There is this one from L'oreal it looks like water, its clear it is really good! I can't remember the name!

I'm not anti it...I'm just scared of it cuz I used to use it wrong, back in the day, and it thinned out my edges.

In other words - the gel is not the problem. I am.

I've been wondering about this gel, does it make your hair hard? Do you use it on dry, wet hair or both? TIA

*off topic...I luv your hair...I hope to be there by December 2006*

I have used "yellow" Dep (super hold?) for years. If I REALLY want to glue my hair down I'll use "blue" Dep (extreme sports hold?) A little dab'll do ya!

Do any type 4b's actually get waves/slicked back hair that stays that way the whole day with any gel? AFter my hair dries it goes back to being kinda hard and not shiny looking

The fantasia thick and shine leaves hair slicked without being hard. It's very good IMO! I have 4 a/b hair and it works well for me!

Ditto for me. Jam. I'm not sure of the color of the top and I don't want to go look but I know the gel itself is green. I'm thinking of trying IC since a lot of people seem to like it. This will be my first time extending my relaxer so I may need something a little strong that jam.

I like Fantasia Sparkles for the wet/ wavy look. It holds my edges down and is still soft.

Elasta is second but only when I wear my hair straight and to hold down the edges. Not a strong hold for me anyway, just a nice soft polished look for the hairline.

I asked my friend at church the other day what she uses on her edges casue they ALWAYS look nice and flat and she said Jam. Then she said, but when I hug somebody, they always come away with this "greasy" face!:lachen: :lachen: :lachen: :lachen: :lachen: :lachen:

I have to laugh because i use 2 products in the poll together but added an extra step that probably made it detrimental. Now I used elasta qp glaze which to me is the equivalent to jam. Prior to the board I used jam AND ampro black gel TOGETHER always... It gave the right hold, right consistency, right shine, and cut the "grease". I think my problem was going under the dryer to make sure it was "baked in". No wonder my hair was dry prior to LHCF. It heped me keep my hair in place for days on end. I always did this when I twist the front of my hair and noticed the front of my hair would flourish more than the back. hmmm. I think skipping going under the dryer part would have saved me.

why are people anti-brown gel?
i dunno, when i was relaxed my hair luved pink lusters brown gel- it wasnt dryin (i always added moisture/oil 1st) and my hair was healthy. i may try it again to see how it hold my natural pony....

I guess Fantasia IC but I'm not too into using gels anymore. I like the shine that it has and it dosen't flake.

I can't speak for all the brown gels but I do know the ampro brown gel is a protein gel. Some people can't take too much protein over and over again, the hair will snap and break and it is also drying. But it did work for me while using it with Jam together but Jam is a conditioning gel and for me it gave the right balance.
I got introduced to ampro brown gel years ago when my hair was broken up and fried and died. I had to get a really short hair cut and she wrapped my hair in the gel. Because my hair flourished, I automatically assumed well -the gel is the bomb, not realizing that using over and over again in the long run the same thng that made it maintain growth was the same thing that was breaking it. The protein helped normalized the hair so to speak from the damage, but after my hair got normal I should have moisturized. - Hey I did'n know. .
