Is there any leave in conditioner in the world that can make naturally coarse hair feel soft? When my hair is wet, it feels so soft. But once its dry it feels like a brillo pad. Any tips appreciated!

paul mitchell's leave-im helps w/mine, but it also depends on other products i use and the way i dry my hair

I tried a mixture of egg, olive oil and some good conditioner I had laying around, mixed it all up and left it on overnight.

Drawback, it drips like crazy but when I rinsed my hair out, it was sooo soft. I pressed afterward and didn't use anything to aid the press and it came out well.

Have you tried pantene hydrating curls? I like that one too.

The only conditioner that made my hair feel soft after it dried was Redken Butter Treat.

Detangle your hair first. Do your hair in sections, keeping each part separated in loose plaits. Maybe you need to do a pretreatment first.

Lots of things get my hair soft: miss Key 10 en 1 super conditioner, pantene R&N conditioner, Mane n Tail Conditioner, etc.

My new favorite leave in conditioner is the Silicon Mix leave-in. This leave in conditioner works miracles for my hair leaving it feeling so soft and silky to the touch.

I'm natural too and must say it will indeed dry like a brillo pad if I don't
1) add a moisturizer, and
2) braid or twist it up

I try new things each time because I don't always have it quite right. It depends on your products and your technique. What you may want to try is:
  • If you're not already doing it, deep condition weekly
  • After washing, I leave my hair for 15 min or so, until much of the water runs or is soaked up by my towel. Then I add my moisturizer to the damp hair. I smooth it into 4 sections and make 8 braids. You can also do corn rows or twists-- or whatever style you're going for.
    • For moisturizer, I've been using 911 Creme Leave-In (but it smells a bit), or I'll use my shea butter/EVOO creamy mixture (it smells too, and sometimes contributes to the thickness). Sometimes I'll add a lil Infusium 23.
Hope this helps. You may want to try the products that everyone else is recommending.

On my coarser areas I find that watery mixes sealed in with thick oils (castor, shea buter) tend to keep those areas softer. Definitely braid, twist, etc while drying if possible to elongate those areas. I also found that kinky-curly curling custard dried very soft and moisturized. it's on the expensive side (22 bucks).

All you need is one product well maybe two. Mix them both together with heat as a deep and your hair will soften up.

Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner

Kenra Intensive Emollient

Empress Moisture Retaining Leave-In is excellent for coarse/and or dry hair.  My mother did the bc and is 100% natural, and she swears by this stuff. I love it on my relaxed hair as well.

if you decide to try this you can go to their website and they will send you free samples. you may want to do that just in case you don't like their products. i think it's kenra.com but im not sure.

in my opinion, the best way to go about coarse hair is to keep it in a bun during the day (wrapping the hair carefully to conceal ends), but before leaving the house, comb in oils..i use WGO oil and essential oils..

if you keep the hair concealed in a bun for a good part of the day, the condition of your hair will start to improve because of the lack of touching, the lack of elements hitting it (what i mean is like car exhaust etc, if you live in the city and harsh sun splitting the ends further)..

plus if you do this once during the day and right before you go to bed, youll wake up with softer smoother hair- expect to REALLY notice results maybe 4 or 5 nights into it because hair may actually be more "THIRSTY" than you think it is and might require time to suck up the oil...

this has DEFINITELY worked for me! hope this helps!

Adding this to my definite list, just the name alone sounds moisturizing. How much is it?

Ooh, Redken butter treat is really good stuff. I bought a tube and I've had it maybe almost a year? I apply my regular conditioner to my hair, and then I use Butter Treat over that conditioner on just my ends. I love that stuff :).

I have to agree with Anky. I love MNT. I like their shampoo, their conditioner (which can used as a leave-in), and their leave-in called Equenne (in a black bottle) I am amazed with. The latter and daily washing has really spoiled my hair rotten! My hair has never been this soft and fluffy.

I'm natural as well and I would have to say that doing a pre shampoo treatment w/a heavy cream and oil works- also after washing putting on Paul mitchell leave in, using a good moisturizer (for me=shea butter) on damp hair and braiding while still damp for drying has worked for me.
