Since long hair seems to be desirable in every culture on earth, it must have greater significance than we think. Like a mating signal. Does it say that you're:

1. Healthy?
2. More fertile?
3. Well taken care of?
4. Higher class?

ETA: I also wonder this about women's bottoms. Why do men stare at them like they do? Is it some type of fertility signal like in other animals? Is there a deeper reason why some men like big ones and some men like small ones? Does it correlate to something that we aren't aware of?

I would not say that it is desirable in every culture on earth. There are quite a few cultures where short hair is preferred.

But to answer your question, I think it depends on the hair. Long, shiny, healthy hair can signal health.

To some people, long hair can signal a lack of hygiene.

It could be either high class or low class depending on the culture. In some cultures, it will be seen as high class because it means the person has been eating well and can maintain healthy hair.

To other cultures (I'm thinking Western), long hair may seem low-class because the person is unable to go to a salon and have their hair trimmed and styled.

It all depends on a lot of factors.

1: Health : Long healthy, shinny hair is a sign of heath
2. Fertility : Hair grows best during our most fertile years
3. Wealth : money to eat well and care for your hair.

:look: Ok let me start off by saying I am a smart a$$ by nature..........
Im going to go with "Im long" :lachen::lachen: Ok ok for real I just needed a laugh.

My real answer would be Im healthy.

Well growing up on the south side of Chicago long hair means TO ME:

1. You are financially stable. In certain areas on the south side, it is rare to see someone with hair longer than SL...especially in the 4a/b textures. Now venture over to Hyde Park and hair longer than SL is quite the average.

Hyde Park is an upper middle class + neighborhood. (also where Barack Obama lived)
You see long hair and some beautiful naturals there as well.

Some people see long and healthy hair and state that they obviously have money to get their hair taken care of on a regular basis.

long hair signals beauty. Plus people with long hair seemed to have more time and money to take of the hair.

When I look at women who have long hair or a lot of hair I think:

1. Healthy:Her body must be utilizing the nutrients from her diet properly, because her hair is flourishing.

2. Knows how to take care of herself: A lot of times people cut their hair short because it's easier to maintain or they don't have time to take care of long hair. When a woman has a lot of pretty hair, it lets people know she takes the time to groom and care for herself.

3. Comfortable with her Femininity: in my opinion, woman with long hair are comfortable with being a woman. Some women cut their hair short as sign of empowerment against men, but women with long hair, in general, are just comfortable with being a woman, man or no man.

4. Care-free: Even though I know this isn't true, I sometimes perceive women with long hair to be care-free, especially when their hair is down and freely flowing or bouncing.

These are just my opinions. Some of them may be stereotypes, but I think a lot of people think this when they see womem with long hair.

I get what you are saying. I think the difference, in that case, is whether the hair is kempt or not.

I can't think of a culture where short hair is the preference. Maybe someone can educate me. I did hear something about South Africa, but that was more about the number of women wearing the head bald.

I think it depends on the long hair your looking at...I saw long WL hair yesterday...And I thought ewwwwww

Unkept
dirty
messy
wild woman

See that's what I wonder, does it correlate to something that we have no idea about now, like the shape of my uterus or something.

to me, if it's clean and taken care of - it's Femininity as a subliminal message.

im just gonna go against the grain & say that i dont think a lot of men are smart enough to think that deep. Most men tell me they like long hair cuz they love how it looks from the back...and how it lays on a bare back. investigate further if u wish...but i just leave it at that. IMO long hair def. represents beauty

If we still had a "thanks" button, I would thank you for that! LOL

Anyway, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE THANKS BUTTON?!?!?!

Body Heat.

Even in cave-man times, the person with the longest hair was desired the most because they could provide more body heat than their shorter hair counterparts. I know that sounds strange but to this day, men subconsciously want "warmth."

Also, it was was good camouflage.

Long hair has also meant youthfulness.

Typically, hair has long been seen as sensual (part of the reason some religions prefer to keep women's hair covered).

Bottoms are the same...when you want a rooster to "mount" (he he) a chicken, you shake the butt at the male. I think it comes from evolution (if you believe in that) because most animals "mount" from behind. Very few animals other than humans copulate face to face. If you agree that we evolved from animals, this could explain why this attraction still exists.

Long hair represents feminity, sensuality, and sexiness.

As far as a big booty, butts are objects of sexual attraction like breast. Also, the angle of a woman's pelvis determines whether the booty sticks out or is flat.

behinds/wide hips indicate fertility, as a wide pelvis is needed to safely deliver a baby...smaller pelvis can cause difficulty during delivery, endangering mother and child.

Long hair is just considered more erotic, sexy, feminine, sensual, etc...

Thick or long hair is a sign of health and youthfulness. Think about when people get sick, or do not have enough to eat, their hair is brittle or thins out.

Okay, I was just thinking about what goes through my mind when I see a man with long hair.

I tend to find men with long hair more masculine, so I think it does have to do with sexuality in a sense. I think the idea is that they are healthier and therefore, more fertile (and therefore more masculine/feminine, etc.).

I think it has more to do with the shininess though because I was watching something awhile back about how when we were more animal-like, our sweat glands gave us really glossy hair, which was more related to hormones.

I must say that for me it used symbolize, at some level, affluence. I say this because when I was in my hometown, you rarely seen many non-biracial black girls with long healthy hair. But, when I came to college my freshmen year...I was wowed by how many black girls had long thick, healthy hair. I mean I was serioulsly in awe! I called my younger sister and told her about it too. I attributed this to these ladies growing up in wealthier families and having the funds to be able to pamper their hair on the regular.

Now, it just symbolizes that the individual takes care of themself.

I agree with many of the ladies....WHERE IS THE THANKS BUTTON????? IMO, I think long hair tells people that you are healthy and very feminine....you are beautiful with or without hair....IMO.....but some women I see with long hair.....look kinda ruff.....so I guess it depends on how the woman carries herself, cuz you can look nice with long hair or ruff with long hair......
